Seems several teams are using 13 personnel. Artie not the minority and a team still playing employs names the Steelers possibly covet? Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:08
Depends on the new coordinator. But Arthur Smith has been doing it for years, so maybe it's not the scheme, it's the players executing it that makes it work.

hey Gerry. Look forward to crossing paths on the links this summer. Do you think Tomlin was really burnt out with coaching? Or is there another non-football reason that caused him to step down?
Gerry Dulac
10:09
I'm sure there were a number of factors, but I do believe him coming to grips with his failure to get the team over the hump played a big part. I don't think he was burned out, maybe just needed to hit the pause button.

Gerry, thanks to you and your colleagues for all of the great coverage of the Steelers over the years. i sure hope it continues in some way shape or form.

Dunka. In the works

Gerry. I won’t waste your time with a long question: Why didn’t Tomlin have a goodbye press conference. Like Cowher and Noll before him?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
Actually, like most coaches. He didn't want to. He has never been a big media person, in case you haven't noticed.

What player was most improved from 24 to 25 in your opinion? JPJ?
Gerry Dulac
10:11
You could put him up there, for sure!

10:11
Has Jones been around or distant since his injury? Asking because Daniel’s was distant and an indicator he was not getting resigned.
Gerry Dulac
10:11
No, I had seen him around.

Why do NFL teams have to announce when  they are interviewing somebody?
Gerry Dulac
10:13
They don't. I think 1) they are being transparent, or 2) they're doing a favor to the candidate by letting others know he is potential head-coaching material.

Personally would like to see Watt and Cam finish their careers as Steelers, but I just can’t see it happening under their current contract, how much is invested in the defense and a new staff on the way. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
I think the time to trade Watt was last year, before the extension, back when they could have received at least a No 1 pick for him. That time might have passed, especially because the contractual situation is heavy for a player whose sack total has declined each season, for whatever reason.

Good morning. I just wanted to thank you and all of the Post- Gazette staff for all of your great coverage of Pittsburgh sports over the years. It's always very insightful and informative. Hopefully there will be some kind of avenue for all of you to continue your good work.
Gerry Dulac
10:22
There is and we are pursuing it. Thanx

Really surprised MT walked with the draft coming to Pittsburgh and all the draft picks. Say what you want MT left taking the high road, however it went down. Agree?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
I don't think the draft being here had any impact on his decision...none obviously. And he left on his terms, which is all any coach would want.

It’s been reported the Ravens fired Harbaugh over a conflict with Jackson and the QB’s desire to move on from the OC. What would the Steelers do in that situation given they’ve always been a coach centric team? Would they side with the coach and keep the OC or acquiesce to the franchise QB who’s a two-time MVP? QBs the level of Jackson are harder to find than coaches, but you can’t let the inmates run the asylum.
Gerry Dulac
10:24
Correct. Jimbo. A player might help to run off a coordinator, but not the head coach, at least not here.

10:24
Best guess, one, neither or both Hayward’s return? Connor (FA), Cam (Contract)
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Cam still has another year on his contract. Unless he decides to retire, which I don't see that happening, not after the high level with which he played again this year, I'm going to guess he will want a new contract, just like he wanted last year (and didn't get).

The fact that Najee Harris claims his last conversation with Tomlin included Mike stating " 'if you were my son, I would tell you not to come back here' " is troublesome. When looking back and seeing  decisions made
Gerry Dulac
10:27
I didn't hear that he said that, but if he did, we don't know the context inn which it was said. Maybe he could have meant you would be better off financially becoming a free agent because they're going to extend you after the season. Idk

Any idea where PQ salary stacks up vs other ILB’s? Is he cap casualty or more likely to return? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
10:30
Queen's average salary of $13.6m ranks seventh among non-edge rushing LBs. The Steelers would save $13.3 million if they cut him before June 1. I think it's more likely he returns because he's a quality player in the middle. I mean, do you realize Robert Spillane gets $11m annualy???

This team is certainly not as good as the one Tomlin inherited. How do think it compares to the one Cowher took over? I think O’Donnell and Brister were better than anyone currently on the roster. That team had two future Hall of Famers and all-time greats in Woodson and Dawson. Also, there were a lot of other good to great players such as Lake, Foster, Haslerig, Nickerson, Llyod, and Thigpen. I’d take that team over this one.
Gerry Dulac
10:34
I get your point. That team, though, hadn't made the playoffs each of the previous two seasons. Certainly they were much better positioned at QB, and that's always the big key.

Why isnt Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak a candidate to be the next Steelers coach?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
I guess they weren't enamored enough, not sure
Linebacker Lounge
10:35
Not saying I want him traded, but seems Herbig would have the most trade value. Am I way off?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
I disagree. Both Watt and Highsmith would get more in a trade, though their contracts, compared to Herbig, might get in the way.

please tell me the McCarthy interview was just a formality?

STORY: In 1992, Dan Rooney had Joe Greene among the candidates for the head-coaching job when Chuck Noll retired. When Joe turned down a chance to become DL coach with the Cincinnati Bengals because he wanted to see how it played out first with the Steelers, Dan Rooney removed him as a candidate and told him not to turn down other opportunities.

First of all, why wouldn't he suggest he return?  He does not think his situation was number one priority to all parties involved?  Is this telling that he acknowledged there his teams do not promise the greatest return?  He suggests a better place exists.  Why?  I think that speaks to a lot of areas.  Did he tell great assistants, who had large personalities, NOT to apply to the Steelers?   Was he saying this to other, outside candidates and inside candidates,  regarding return?   Is this why so many NEVER re-sign??  I see mediocrity for miles and I know the man is not dumb and now I know he said this.  It is shocking and confusing.  I am DAMN glad he left, now!!!!
Gerry Dulac
10:43
I think I'm missing a setup to your questions

Gerry can an assistant coach who is still in the playoffs accept a Head Coaching job, or do they have to wait until their team is eliminated?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
They can, I'm sure, but it would be done quietly and secretively. Wouldn't be announced till after the team was eliminated. But it would still look bad for the coach if he was interviewing and agreeing to coach another team while his team was involved this far into the postseason.
