OK kids, here we go....

Gerry: one of the pregame shows Sunday described how the Browns put coaching candidates through "psychological testing" that "tends to favor brainiacs".  This is now a fairly common practice in executive hiring for corporations. It has been reported that Rodgers once called McCarthy the "lowest IQ coach" that he ever played for.  Not that the Browns should be emulated, but do the Steelers do any type of testing of candidates like that?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
You kinda stole my answer MD, which was effectively -- maybe the Browns should conduct the tests on themselves.

What kind of coach is McCarthy known to be?  Developmental (or is that for assistants), offensive, defensive, good at making adjustments, time management, good at putting his players in good positions?
Gerry Dulac
10:56
A winning one

What are the Jets thinking right now about their trading Sam Darnold in 2021 for a 6th, a 2nd and a 4th?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
Probably nothing Bill. That's why they're the Jets.

Gerry,  Any of these predictions sound familiar?

"Next Steeler coach will not have HC experience."
"Next Steeler coach will be young."
"Next Steeler coach will have a defense background."
"Most impactful Steeler rookie in 2025: Caleb Johnson."
"'Cam Johnston is a lock on the punter job"               Do you have the integrity to acknowledge how off the mark they are?
Gerry Dulac
10:57
They don't sound familiar. Who made them?
Bill in LA
10:57
Now that Kenny Pickett and George Pickens are free agents, what are the chances the Steelers pounce and bring back the old "dream team" for 2026
Gerry Dulac
10:58
About as solid as bringing back Mike Tomlin to coach the defense Bill

Gerry: McCarthy answered your first question yesterday by basically saying he took a year off from studying football and that time off went too fast.  He even got choked up seemingly because he will now miss time with his family.  Did that response to the first question of the press conference shock you?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
I got the impression he was tearing up because he was talking about the time he got to spend with his family, not the time he will miss with his family.
Mike
10:59
I feel it was a bad look for Tomlin to not have a press conference.  The Steelers standard set by the last two coaches was to address the fans and media when stepping down.  Any idea why Mike didn't do that?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Yeah, because that's what he does. He never wants to give anyone a glimpse into his decisions. He basically doesn't care what they think or feel obliged to tell them what he thinks.

Hi Gerry, so we know McCarthy wants AR back. Coupled with the likelihood the Steelers will draft a QB at some point - potentially on day 2 - might we have seen the last of Mason Rudolph?
Gerry Dulac
11:01
I'm not saying MM doesn't want him back, but what did you expect him to say in that situation?
FC
11:01
GM Gerry! I have to say I feel a little bit better with the hire after the press conference. This guy bleads black & gold. With that being said, which names are you hearing for coordinators?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
I thought a lot of the people who were criticizing the decision to hire McCarthy softened their complaints after watching that press conference.
New Start
11:02
Watching the press conference with the new Mike was refreshing.  It was nice to see humble instead of cocky and arrogance.  It was nice to see emotion instead of being cold.  It was nice to see sincerity instead of BS.  Did you sense a different vibe being in the room?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
Pay the man!

Can I get your prediction on which players under contract you think could be in danger of being cut or traded due Mike McCarthy's philosophy?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
Too early
Steel City Meltdown
11:03
Hello, Gerry.  Always appreciate the chats and hope you and the PG guys land on your two feet in May.  I am cautiously hopeful with the hiring of Coach McCarthy.  How much freedom do you feel he will have to make (possibly) difficult decisions about older veterans like Watt or Ramsey?  Or is that strictly a Mr. Rooney decision?  And - with the emphasis on the West Coast offense and our lack of offensive production, do they finally go out and get WR#2 in free agency, or the draft?  Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
11:04
He will be consulted but it won't be his decision. Finances play a part in all that. As for WR, there is no question they will attack it high in the draft, especially with MM. And I don't think it's WR#2. Maybe that role is more suited for Metcalf.

Any chance Shula is in the mix for DC and Associate HC (promotion title) or Scheelhasse OC (promotion and experience) as MM is calling the plays regardless?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
None. Why would they leave the staff of a Super Bowl-type team for a lateral move? As a McVay assistant, they are head coaches in waiting.
Mike
11:06
I believe the biggest failure of Tomlin was losing the Steelers culture.  Noll and Cowher built a culture of team first, hard work, discipline, and accountability.  Tomlin developed player first attitudes, lack of discipline, and no accountability.  Do you think McCarthy can get the culture back to where it was?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
I don't think he lost the culture at all. That's an easy thing to say. I just think he didn't have the right pieces in place, whether on his staff or loading his roster with players on the downside of their careers.
Linebacker Lounge
11:08
The Questions MM seemed the most comfortable with were offensive related. And appreciate the candidacy of who will be calling the plays - as expected. Agree?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
Well, yeah, because that's his area of expertise.

What or who changed their mind of hiring a retread. Any idea?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
In case you haven't noticed, that's a pretty good retread.

Harry Enten writes for CNN that the Buffalo Bills new stadium because it is not a dome stadium may force the NFL to move home playoff games away from Buffalo because the weather should not affect the game.  Could this happen and how would Green Bay and Philly feel about that?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
I highly doubt the league would EVER do that -- nor would the owners go along with it -- because the participating teams (and cities) would be losing all that revenue if they moved the game elsewhere.

Cam or TJ not at press conference a sign of uncertain futures or don’t read into it? A little surprising niether was there 🤔
Gerry Dulac
11:11
Don't read into it. Not surprised at all.

Mr. Dulac, as frustrating as this franchise can be at times, it's no where near as frustrating as some of the whiny fans and media. Ive heard countless times now how McCarthy is a fool because in one breath he says he wants Rodgers back, then in the next says you need a mobile QB. It's called nuance. Rodgers isn't a lont term solution, and a rookie QB/Will Howard probably isnt a short term solution. You gotta meet in the middle somewhere. Am I an idiot?
Gerry Dulac
11:13
No, and neither is he. You gotta remember coaches say things in press conferences that usually straddle the fence. They're not going to tip their hand in front of a TV audience or at an introductory press conference.

Should be a quieter week for you and your team this week Gerry.  Any thoughts on who the defensive coordinator should be or will be?  Also how much does an offensive coordinator do under McCarthy if Mccarthy is calling the plays?
