Isn't Arthur Smith just another typical Steelers/Tomlin hire? Somewhat safe and very much unimaginative. They only interviewed 3 people in this monumentally important process. Tomlin will never hire a young up and comer because he would be looking over his shoulder all the time waiting for that guy to take his job. Staring down 9-8, or 10-7, and another early exit if they even make the playoffs. Rinse, repeat.

His whole staff is filled with young guys who have never been prominent NFL coaches. It's time he started hiring more guys with a proven NFL track record.

Instead of finding an OC they felt could maximize Pickett’s strengths did they hire Smith more designed to cover up his deficiencies and make him a game manager?

Gerry,  Instead of looking to the future MT remains in the past. Picks OC who more suited for the 90’s NFL.  Running the ball is a necessary component but the NFL is a pass driven league.  Running the ball when you’re down by 2 scores in the 4th won’t cut it.  Letting MT select the OC with his past track record is the definition of insanity!   Any positives with this hire besides he is not Canada?  Thanks.

Really? His OC style in 2019-2020, which is still modern-day NFL as far as I can see, is what got him a head coaching job. And, if anything, in case you and others haven't been watching, the league is starting to lean back to the run a little more. The Ravens, Lions and 49ers all want to run the ball. Did anyone notice that??

Did the Steelers pursue the long OC search like they discussed?  The first two interviews checked off the criteria of the Rooney Rule.  Then they hired the first person they interviewed.  It seems like they hired the first person they really had interest in.  The other two interviews seemed like mere procedure.

You mean like buying the first house they looked at?? Isn't it at all possible that the third candidate they interviewed was the one they wanted all along? Did anyone think of that??

Hi Gerry, I'm not sure how I feel about the Arthur Smith OC hire.  It seems a little uninspiring with more his emphasis on the run game and less so on schemes to get receivers open.  I guess I'd feel better, if I knew they were still in the market for a bright passing game coordinator (PGC). Do you know if their still in the market for a PGC? Also, does this pretty much guarantee Najee receive a 5th year option? Thanks

If you had to build your offense around a run game with Najee Harris or a pass game with Kenny Pickett, which would you choose? Look, they aren't going to become a run-heavy team. In fact, I'd be willing to bet their run/pass ratio won't change much at all. Tannehill had his best and most productive seasons when Smith was the OC. Give it a chance.

The latter is more likely, though not a lock, if Rudolph signs elsewhere

How is Smith with discipline?  Will he be able to keep our two clown receivers in line?  I remember LeBeau grabbing Anthony Smith for showboating.  It's nice to have a coordinator that will take control when the head coach isn't willing to.
