OK kids, we're going to start our chat in just a few minutes, so get ready....

Ok, here we go....

Gerry. Do you read the chats from the other Steeler writers? And if so, does that influence whether you take certain questions or not?
Gerry Dulac
10:03
I do not. That way I can't be influenced when questioners ask "Your thoughts?"

In your opinion, should Mike Tomlin be the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers? Of course his track record suggests he should coach somewhere, but the argument could be made for a fresh start, tough to remain relevant in one place so long, etc.?
Gerry Dulac
10:05
His track record will land him in the Hall of Fame, possibly on the first ballot, but your opinion is not without merit

Morning! Just curious. I know that you had mentioned seeing Kevin Colbert around a bit during the season. Has he been around at all during the off-season or the Senior Bowl by chance? Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
10:05
Not that I'm aware of. He's working in a new capacity with the Steelers, but it has nothing to do with scouting or talent evaluation.

Gerry Lots to like about Pickett's first season but lots of questions still to be answered.  From your discussions with the experts the experts that watch video (ie: Merrill Hoge and others like him), what is the verdict.  Many times when Pickett held the ball too long there were open receivers down field--he just didn't read it.  Is this something to be concerned about?  Some QBs never cross make that progression consistently enough to be able to see the WR open.  So I'm wondering what the consensus is from those that watch the film.
Gerry Dulac
10:09
Not to be concerned at all. He's a rookie, that's what happens. Seeing NFL defenses and going through progressions is something that takes time, like two or three years. I'm going to guess he will get better at that based on the progress I saw from him this season.

Do you believe Robinson will be our starting inside linebacker next year?…if that is true.. who starts next to him ?..
Gerry Dulac
10:11
He will get a shot, I'm sure, and I'm guessing it will be Myles Jack. But that depends if they do anything in free agency and what they do in the draft. Jack is due $8 million in salary this year. That might be a factor, too

If the NFL had the economic structure of major league baseball would the Steelers spend like the Pirates?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
You should ask the question the other way -- if MLB had the economic structure of the NFL, would the Pirates spend like the Steelers??

Good morning Mr. Dulac. I’ve been a fan of Coach Tomlin, not so much now. It seems to me that the team needs an infusion of fresh ideas and I don’t think he’s opened minded enough to change. Thoughts?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
10:13
My thoughts are this -- your thought is not preposterous.

Hi Gerry. I didn't like Fittipaldo's mock draft at all. My comment/question is about Andy Weidl. He gets a lot of credit for putting together Philly's draft board but the primary reason they're playing in the Super Bowl is the way they built the roster through trades and free agency (I will say however they've done a good job drafting offensive linemen and they only have one 1st rounder starting). I'm not suggesting trades and free agency are bad things because I believe the days of running off multiple Super Bowls are gone (the Chiefs would be considered the closest thing to a dynasty today) but it's contrary to the way the Steelers do business. Am I off base or do you think he'll be an asset?
Gerry Dulac
10:15
Every team makes trades or uses free agency to fill holes in their lineup because seven rounds of the draft cannot possibly address all needs. Andy Weidl did a good job in Philly. He will do a good job here.

With Cam Heyward aging out…it almost seems like we need use two picks or a pick and a FA there on the DL..your thoughts?..
Gerry Dulac
10:16
I've thought since Stephon Tuitt retired. And they used FA last year to get Ogunjobi.  They need to restock the defensive line with top-tier picks, find a Heyward, find a Tuitt, get a stud or two. Dont keep waiting until the third or fourth round.

If the chiefs don’t win Sunday Belichick will remain the only head coach in the entire league with multiple super bowls. So for those that despise every Tomlin and every thing the Steelers do, maybe, just maybe, it’s pretty freakin hard to win the big one?
Gerry Dulac

Heyyyyyy, who let this insightful, common-sense, level-headed observation into the chat????

how do u feel about picket going into the offseason and what do you think he needs work on the most
Gerry Dulac
10:21
He just needs time. Year 2 and 3 will tell you what kind of quarterback he will be, how he rises (or falls) on the learning curve. The second year will be much easier than the first, just from a learning standpoint and how fast the game moves in his mind. Of course, year 2 also means defenses will have a better read on his tendencies the second time around.

The Rooney family has done great things for Pittsburgh and deserves a lot of respect.  But when I read the quote from ARII that essentially stated that Tomlin’s eval is based on ARII being glad to have him as the coach, I couldn’t help but feel disappointed.  I’m not saying Tomlin should be fired or that Rooney is wrong to have faith in him, but there is such a thing as having too much faith in someone.  Has Mr. Rooney placed too much faith in Tomlin to the point that he is not intervening to strengthen the organization when he really should be?

I think there is nothing wrong, when evaluating the season and the performance of Mike Tomlin, to let everyone know -- the players, the coach, the fan base -- that, yeah, a 7-2 finish is nice but 9-8 and a missed playoff is not going to be accepted. Let the people in the building know that's not going to be tolerated, even if it's saber-rattling. It would also do wonders for that segment of the fan base that wants to hear that 9-8 is not acceptable, not when six of the last seven wins were against teams with losing records.

How many wins for the Steelers next season?  Say Hey say 11.

Gerry, in your opinion if all of the CB's are available that the Steelers value with the 1st pick which one do they take.
Gerry Dulac

I don't know that yet. But I will as we get closer

Why did the Steelers just make Brian Like the assistant head coach so he could have hello offense and defense
Gerry Dulac
10:30
Because they probably knew he would only be around a year anyway.

Good morning.  Will Coach Olsavsky resume his duties now that Flores is gone, or will the Steelers hire a replacement?  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
10:32
I'm not sure, but probably keep Jerry O doing what he has been doing.

Good Morning, with the Steelers likely losing Rudolph and Trubisky. What QB vet would you like to see them go after in FA on possibility day 3 or 4 and or what round could you see them drafting one if any?
Gerry Dulac
10:33
I really don't see them drafting any because it's not a priority to get a No. 3 QB. But. If Trubisky is somehow not here, look for them to pursue Jacoby Brissett

10:33
Do you think the steelers will use one of there 2nd round picks...to get the big nose tackle from baylor to help control the middle of the line
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Right now, I don't know who it will be, but you have heard me since last year say they need to rebuild the D-line with a young stud.
mike
10:34
why are you so confident that the steelers won't be active in free agency and will only sign their own players? if they cut trubisky, jackson, witherspoon and jack, that's $32M in cap space right there. with full or partial restructures for watt and fitzpatrick, they can easily have $40-$50M in cap space. not saying they'll sign premiere people but there's a new GM and assistant GM. when someone asked last year if the steelers might sign jack, you said "keep dreamin." don't you think a little humility would be helpful?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
Yeah, and if they cut Heyward, Watt and Minkah they'll save another $69 million. Just cut em all and spend in free agency
