is there any way the steelers can keep bud dupree like maybe working w bens cap hit
Gerry Dulac
11:10
Not really. And you and others fail to look at this from Bud's point of view. He can get a lot of money in free agency, more than the Steelers can or will pay him, whether for one year or five years, and why would he turn that down or be expected to turn that down? He isn't and he won't.
Patrick
11:11
I still believe the Steelers are contenders if Ben is back as I expect and hope, but they have a lot of needs and those needs increase if Pouncey retires or is cut. Do you think they can fill enough of those gaps through the draft and free agency and how do you prioritize those gaps?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
The Steelers do a better job of just about every team in the league of staying competitive and relevant, year after year after year. History and proof are on their side.

Gerry, I respect your knowledge of all things Steelers but I can't help wondering why you believe the team should maintain a path with Ben at QB for next season. Most outside NFL observers think that Ben and the Steelers are barely a playoff team at best and are mid-pack in the league according to the Super Bowl odds for next year. Why not use Ben's cap money to start building for the future rather than clinging to what's left of the past?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
I knew there was a 'but' in there somewhere. And I'm not interested in what outside observers think. Never was. They are usually misinformed and only opinionated. That's why they're on the outside.

Hi Gerry.  If Pouncey returns for another season, does it mean that DeCastro is probably gone? I thought DeCastro played hurt most of the season which reflected in his play.
Gerry Dulac
11:14
More than likely, it will be the other way around. Pouncey's teammates will be surprised if he returns. They believe he will retire.

Greetings from Augusta!  So given the INDEFENSIBLE snub of TJ Watt in the DPOTY balloting, I think it is time to make these votes public.  Just like Congress, and the Supreme Court have to sign their votes and their decisions, the people who vote for these honors should have to do the same thing.  Wouldn't historians love to know the goofballs who refused to make Hank Aaron and Ty Cobb unanimous Hall of Famers?  Same in this case!  Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
I would say those that have an appetite for such things you remember that Congress and the Supreme Court are members who have been installed by a vote of the public or approved by people who have been voted into office. It is a tradition unlike any other. Plus, I don't think being beaten out by Aaron Donald is a grave injustice.

Gerry, who joins Alan Fanaca on the Steelers' all-time offensive line? Mike Webster and Dermontti Dawson are givens, but who else? Tunch? Gerry Mullins? DeCastro? Pouncey?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Pouncey is only one, and he will wallow in the shadows on Webster and Dawson.

Hi Gerry...just wanted to say good job picking the winner and nailing half of the score with your SB prediction...nobody could have predicted that the Chiefs were only gonna score 9 points.
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Thanx. I certainly didn't.

Hi Gerry,  are the Steelers wanting Ben and Pouncy to take an actual pay cut to return as opposed to a re-structure with voidable years etc ?
Gerry Dulac
11:21
I think the Steelers believe Pouncey is retiring. And Ben will have to restructure his deal, not just merely take a pay cut.

Do you think the Steelers still believe Justin Layne can be a productive player?  I’m hoping he can step up if Haden/Nelson are gone.  Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:22
I think the Steelers are starting to have questions about Justin Layne. By the postseason, he was behind an undrafted rookie on the depth chart.

Gerry  don't some fans remind you of people that complain about bad roads and then get upset when they are working on them.

What is your gut feeling on Pouncey does he retire? If he does retire does that pretty much open the 1st round pick to just best OLineman available regardless of position?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
It depends what they do in free agency. I think they will try to sign a center in free agency and not worry about trying to find one in the draft. If not, they will have to take a center in the first couple rounds. A guy like David Andrews might be a stop-gap at center in free agency.
Ryan
11:23
If we use a tag this year I think it should be placed on Sutton, whether its franchise or transition tag, your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:24
They might not be in position to tag players with a reduced salary cap.
Kevin
11:24
HI Gerry,  do you think Ben will tell the team without certain players being retained/resigned he will not be back ?
Gerry Dulac
11:25
I think it will be the other way around, trust me. They will tell him which players are or might be coming back and leave it to him to decide if he wants to deal with that. That's why I say I believe the Steelers want Ben to make up their minds for them.

Do you think Feiler can be converted to C if Pouncey retires?  That way we can fill other needs such as T, RB, TE, WR.
Gerry Dulac
11:26
No. He should be put back at right tackle. That's where he belongs.

Gerry, After the dismantling by Jacksonville’s physicality in a playoff loss a couple years ago, I asked you if that was how the Steelers should try to build (physical and run the football).. You were not buying it and lit me up! Do you still feel the passing game is the way to go? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:28
The passing game is the way to go, but you have to be able to run the ball. And the only way that is going to happen is if they change the mentality and scheme of the running attack. That will require them to be more attacking with their linemen, not drop-stepping and vertical-setting.
Patrick
11:29
How likely are they to draft a ILB in the first 3 rounds? In both of our most recent playoff loses, our ILBs have been exposed.  It didn't hurt that Shazier and Bush were injured for both.  The 2 Devon's in  Tampa Bay should how a defense can function with 2 athletic ILBs
Gerry Dulac
11:31
Uh....I think you mean Lavonte David and Devin White. To your point, that wouldn't surprise me if they did. Unless they think Avery Williamson can be the guy. It might be more likely they will take an OLB before they take an ILB.

11:31
At this point, what is your projected starting OL for next year?  I know they will probably draft a couple but the 1st would come in Rounds 1-2.
Gerry Dulac
11:33
Too early to tell for sure, but I think you can count on Okorafor, Dotson, DeCastro and Banner for now and don't count out Feiler.

any word on db coach candidates? I do not like austin taking care of both db and s as we have young dbs (Pierre/Layne/etc) to develop.
Gerry Dulac
11:33
They are scheduled to talk with DB coach candidates this week.

How affected will the Steelers' (and every team's) draft preparation be with all of the disruptions to the usual process--ie no Combine, guys who didn't or couldn't play in 2020, etc?
Gerry Dulac
11:34
It will be impacted greatly, but all in the same boat.

Looking at the post Super Bowl team odds , how long has it been since Cleveland seemed a better bet than Pittsburgh ?
