Hey G.  I suspect Pitt fired a bullet for Vander Esh but hit Holcomb, eh?  Which of the two do you think is a better fit for Pitt?
Gerry Dulac
11:35
I thought all along Leighton Vander Esch was a good fit for the Steelers, for the same reason the Cowboys gave him a big deal to re-sign: He's a good player

Hi Gerry. Does it now seem as though the Steelers are going to draft two DBs in the draft? Losing Cam Sutton and replacing him with a talented but older vet in Peterson makes it look like they will have to add more depth at corner and slot.
Gerry Dulac
11:41
If they draft a CB high, which they will, that means they will have him, Peterson, Levi Wallace, Ahkello Witherspoon and Arthur Maulet under contract, with the possibility of re-signing James Pierre. That's six right there. The only add will be if they decide they need a backup slot corner instead of Pierre.

Is Holcomb an upgrade over Spillane? Any other ILB’s out there that are possible to sign?
Gerry Dulac
11:43
I think so because he has more experience as a starter. And I don't think the Steelers wanted to reply on Spillane as a starter. They look at him as a nice backup who, if need be, can be a serviceable and reliable replacement starter.
The Real TP Hunter
11:43
Although the Steelers signed Cole Holcomb to replace Spillane, do you think ILB may move up a notch in the draft priority?
Gerry Dulac
11:43
Nope
Bill
11:43
How do you feel about the risk of the Cole Holcomb signing given he's started to break down with leg, knee, and foot injuries?
Gerry Dulac
11:43
That is always a concern and that's why his signing is predicated on a physical.

11:45
Does the loss of Spillane and dwindling FA class increase the probability that Bush is retained on a 1 or 2 yr deal or will ILB be targeted higher in the draft now?
Gerry Dulac
11:47
I don't think ILB will be targeted any higher in the draft, but I didn't expect one to be any higher than 49, if that, anyway. But that is more likely than re-signing Bush, though, like Terrell Edmunds last year, that is always a small possibility if he is still sitting out there. I just wouldn't put any money on it.
The Real TP Hunter
11:47
What are the chances that Edmunds comes back as the strong safety after they signed Kazee?
Gerry Dulac
11:48
Kazee is a free safety who started one game at strong safety when Edmunds was injured. But I don't think they re-signed Kazee to be their strong safety. I'm not sure bringing him back has anything to do with what will happen with Edmunds.

Morning, Gerry! I think the Steelers have done pretty well so far in the Free agency period. What move do you think they could still make to make it an "A" rating leading up to the draft? any players on your radar?
Gerry Dulac
11:51
The Steelers rarely get an 'A' in free agency because they never go after a splash player. But I thought their FA class last year (Trubisky, Cole, Daniels, Ogunjobi, Wallace) was very good, among their better ones, maybe even best ever. I don't think you will see them sign any player who would make this class an 'A.' I think Patrick Peterson is as big as it gets.

So it looks like another year and the Steelers did their thing in FA.   Holcomb is a solid get.  Larry O back, maybe upgrade at G, CB stays about the same(saved money)  So now, would you consider them open to drafting any position at 17(not QB, TE or RB)?   I still think OT or CB at 17.   What say you?
Gerry Dulac
11:55
I don't think anything they have done in free agency changes what I think they will do in the draft. And that is ...  defense will be the choice at No. 17 and 32, probably CB and DL in some combination. And if it isn't their top two picks, certainly two of their first three. The other pick would be an OL. To me, the best option is C John Michael Schmitz, who looks like a ready-made NFL starter

Morning Gerry!  Hope the Steelers really upgrade the trenches with early picks in this years draft. Of course they need a CB with first few picks but Cam need a top tier replacement and Kenny needs some top tier big boy talent around him.  I don’t want to reach for a CB and if anything, trade back from 32 unless they LOVE a player still on the board.  That 32nd pick will have alot of GM’s drooling and would love to add another day 2 pick.  Thoughts? Thx for all you do!
Gerry Dulac
11:56
My thoughts are, I agree with your thoughts!! And, if our chat had more financial backing in these inflationary times, I would pay you.

DL, CB, OL, Edge, CB, WR - sound about right for first 6 picks?
Gerry Dulac
11:56
Not bad, not bad

Do the Steelers think Connor Heyward is ready to be the No. 2 TE?  Is his blocking good enough to take that over?  Is it an either-or thing with him and Zach Gentry now, or is there still room for both on the team?
Gerry Dulac
11:57
No, but I think they think Connor Heyward is a baller who needs to get on the field somewhere. And, yes, there is room for both on the team

11:57
Would you consider bringing back devin bush or is that off the table now that they brought in a FA LB?
Gerry Dulac
11:58
Only if he is still sitting out there in April and May and they are desperate.
Nate from Fort Wayne
11:58
Do you think that Aaron Rodgers is slowly tarnishing the way he's going to be remembered? should the Jets be ashamed for catering to him?
Gerry Dulac
11:58
He is definitely tarnishing his image in Green Bay, where he never be revered like Brett Favre

Hi Gerry, in your opinion should they have spent $11M/yr on Sutton?  Since they didn't, was Peterson the right move given what was available at the position and plan to go CB early?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
12:00
No. And yes. God bless Cam Sutton for getting that contract. A good dude who is respected and liked by everyone in that locker room. But there's no way the Steelers were going to pay him that kind of money, nor should they.

The first report I read on Cole Holcomb is that he struggles in coverage. Is he essentially Spillane 2.0?
Gerry Dulac
12:01
Again, I haven't received a scouting report on him yet this morning, so I can't say

12:01
Gerry, with the signings of Peterson and Holcomb, does this increase the likelihood that the Steelers will concentrate on D Line in Round 1?
Gerry Dulac
12:02
Not especially. Cornerback remains a very real possibility anyway. And ILB was never a possibility in round 1.

Gerry,  Good prediction on Scheffler to win the Players!  Now who is your early pick for the Masters?
Gerry Dulac
12:03
Thanx. Check back w me.

12:03
Gerry    Who are your favorite free agents that the Steelers have signed in the past?
Gerry Dulac
12:03
James Farrior at the top of the list. Jeff Hartings was a good one too.
Hi Gerry -
12:04
If you could trade Mitch T, what level of comp would you expect in return?  How much cap savings would the Steelers save in 2023?  Thanks
Gerry Dulac
12:04
If the Steelers cut him, they would save $10.6 million against the cap. But I don't think they would expect anything more than a third- or 4th round pick.
