Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 03.23.22

OK, kids, we're going to start our chat in about 15 minutes so get ready....
10:50
Ok, kids, let's get started....
Mike
10:50
Please squash the news that the Steelers would pounce on Baker Mayfield if he was released from the Browns?!?!
Gerry Dulac
10:51
First off, it's not news -- it's mindless, uninformed pontification by people who have no clue what's happening here. So no need to squash
Teflon Tomlin
10:51
At what point does Tomlin ever get fired? 3 playoff wins in 15 years? 20 years? 3 wins in 11 years is unacceptable but Tomlin has changed the Steelers standard from competing for SuperBowls to  1.) wild card appearances, Non losing seasons, and bragging rights for organizational stability with 3 coaches in 54 years
Gerry Dulac
10:53
You can ask that question all you want but I don't think it's discussed much, if at all, on the South Side. Hey, I always use the Tony Dungy example: Tampa Bay fired him even though he was winning and getting to the postseason because he couldn't advance past the first round. They hired Jon Gruden and went to the Super Bowl.
Terry
10:53
Do you think the Steelers want to resign Edmonds or do you think they are targeting another player to man his spot next year?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
They are waiting to see what happens with him in free agency. If he signs with another team, oh well. If he doesn't, they will consider. They are not going to chase him with money.
Dan
10:54
Why does the national media constantly refer to Mike Tomlin as a "great coach"? Are they simply unaware of his dismal post season results over the past 11 years?
Gerry Dulac
10:55
Either unaware or don't want to give it any credence.

10:55
Gerry, I hope the Steelers go DL in Round 1, but I think they will take Willis if available at 20
Gerry Dulac
10:55
I think the first part of your observation is more spot on.
Teddy
10:55
Do you think Chris Boswell will receive an extension this offseason?
Gerry Dulac
10:55
He should. Can't think of many kickers in the league better than Boz.

Doubt you’ll respond but…you are unfailingly very snarky and rude when somebody asks something that you deem unlikely or silly. Are you then willing to issue a sincere apology to the person who asked about signing Myles Jack after you immaturely acted like that and were proven wrong?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
See, you're wrong on several fronts, including the part where I wouldn't respond.

Been asking this for weeks and you’ve been ducking it - guess because you don’t have an answer. Coach Tomlin is never seen with a play-sheet or speaking into his headphones presnap when the defense is on the field. Butler constantly was - can you explain why you and others then insist Coach T is calling plays?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
You can believe what you want. Maybe Tomlin has it all in his head. Did you ever see Dick LeBeau with a call sheet? No, and he called all the plays for all those years.

Does your crystal ball show the Steelers in a 2023 playoff game? Thanks Gerry,
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Hey, I didn't think they would make it this year, especially after I watched the last eight games of the season. They were dreadful and they still made it. So I rule out nothing.

Unless the Steelers absolutely love Pickett or Willis, why in the world would they draft either of them at 20? And if they do love one of them, then it really didn't make sense to sign Trubisky. Do you agree?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Hey, who let this intelligent question slip into the chat???
John P
11:00
If you were GM, would you move up to take Willis and at what cost?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
Nope.
Jim in Az.
11:00
Gerry, assuming no other FA signings between now and the draft, then Pickett is gone and Jordan Davis is gone.....who is the Steelers first pick?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
I don't think you have to worry about the Pickett thing and I think Baltimore will draft Davis at 14 if he's there. He's a Ravens-type player if ever there were one. There are several DTs that will still work.
Chris
11:02
Would the Steelers really be interested in Baker Mayfield, as reports yesterday indicated?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
See above response

Gerry I see the Steelers taking a QB in round one and a WR in round 2. What say you?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
I say you're wrong. I can see a WR on day 2, for sure, but is anybody paying attention here? The Steelers just signed two OLinemen and a QB in free agency. They didn't sign a defensive lineman for good reason: They have old guys, proven starters, on the defensive line. They need a fresh infusion of young talent. So guess where they're going to go..???

Why the hurry to sign Chuks?Collins signs with Cincy for about same money?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
I don't have a problem w signing him
Lee
11:05
Hey gerry I'm not a big fan of Willias. His stats last year are horrible when they actually played somebody good. What's your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
He might not be a first-round pick in any other year. And has anybody noticed how many QBs are being signed and traded? And do you know the reason? Because the draft class stinks.
Alex B
11:06
How far or how many years do you think will it be till the Steelers are Super Bowl Contenders?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
It doesn't take long in the NFL. And need I remind you they've been to the postseason the past two years, which means they can't be THAT FAR AWAY.

Gerry thanks for the informative chats.  2 questions. If the Browns release/cut Mayfield are they on the hook for the entirety of his 18.8 million dollar salary     Second question. If J Davis  and Willis are not there at 20 would you look to trade back in the draft and maybe pick up a couple more day2 picks.
Gerry Dulac
11:08
No, if he is cut before June 1, he is off their books. And, no, I won't -- and I severely doubt they would -- trade back
Alex B

Have the Steelers fallen into a trap or lull in how they approach building a super bowl teams as oppose to a playoff contender, other teams seem to be willing to take a chance by giving up draft picks and guaranteed money ?
Gerry Dulac
11:12
Name one team other than the Rams who have succeeded at that?? No, there is no lull or trap. And, in case you haven't paid attention to the last 40 years, no team has had more continued success than the Steelers. Only one has won more Super Bowls and that's because of a once-in-a-lifetime player who deprived them of three more Super Bowl appearances (titles). I suspect they are keenly aware of what they are doing.
