Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 04.10.24

OK kids, let's get our chat started...fire away!!
Tom

I see a lot of people write for example, " Steelers need to draft a C, CB, then WR."  Or "They will draft BPA at a position of need."  I get you want to get better as a team next year, but isn't the point to get better than all the Other teams? Is this short sitedness why there is so much parity in the NFL, everbody tries to put a good team on the field instead of dominant players? At least for the first few rounds should you try to get the BPA always?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
Dominant players are not always easy to find, especially at No. 20. And it's not easy to project who will be dominant and who won't. That's why there are so many draft "busts," if you will. Then you find a Tom Brady or Antonio Brown on the sixth round. Not that easy

HI GERRY  JUST WONDERING IF THE STEELERS ARE GOING TO SIGN SIMMONS
Gerry Dulac

Not after they signed DeShon Elliott

Gerry, you are surely aware that Verne "stole" the Yes Sir call from Ben Wright, who took his lingering bitterness to the grave. On a related corollary, Johnie Miller's "how about in" should be just as famous as Koch's "better than most". Thanks for listening.
Gerry Dulac
10:37
I'll let Verne know
Danny10:36I seen last week u said khan had no say in the head coaching position did that go for former gms as well an if so why
10:38
Yes. They might have an opinion or some amount of input, but they don't make the hire. The owner does. That has always been the case.
Danny
10:38
I'm such a big steelers fan I want to know everything I can about them can u tell me something I might not know or if there's a book I can read to find everything there is to know

Are there any NFL regular season games slated for Ireland in the near future? If so, will the Steelers likely be in that game given the late Dan Rooney's role as US Ambassador to Ireland?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
The Steelers will likely head to Ireland in the neat future, though probably not before 2027

KP did what they wanted - didn’t turn over the ball and won games. But KP knew how they treated Mason Rudolph who got yanked for Duck Hodges and saw how they signed the Mitch Trubisky and buried Mason the depth chart. Then its Mason Rudolph over KP because of an injury. Then they sign Russell Wilson. In KP’s eyes, the organization were flakes, indecisive with quarterbacks, no commitments. That’s why Kenny was just fed up with the Steelers after the Wilson signing. So let’s not judge KP please for asking for a trade from the flaky Steelers.
Gerry Dulac
10:39
Oh, OK, sure.
Bill in LA
10:39
Russell Wilson is short, probably the shortest quarterback in the league. Its hard to see over the tackles and do multiple reads. Given his aging and being slower now, I think the shortness is catching up to him, he can’t compensate by scrambling around like he used to, which means he effectiveness will go down. Agree?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Those 26 TDs and only eight picks last year were no accident. So, no.

Gerry, the Steelers pick at #20 is___ and the winner of this year’s Masters is____
Gerry Dulac

You're going to have to be patient my friend. Masters pick will come out later today. Steelers pick will come out April 25 in the am

Is your charity golf outing taking place this year, if so where and when.

Alas, after 25 great years, I'm sorry to say it is not.

10:41
to your knowledge, who do you think the Steelers will take at 20?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
A right tackle, center or WR, but you never know.
Tim
10:42
Any names worthy of a reasonable trade up in round 1 that might be worth the draft capital given?  Hopefully with a better outcome than the Bush debacle.
Gerry Dulac
10:43
I think it's more likely they trade up in the second round if they haven't used their No. 1 pick on a center

Good Morning, Gerry!  I see that the Steelers invited Maason Smith for a visit.  Some say he is a later round option at 3 or 4.  Why is this?  Would this be Dan McCullers version 2.0?
Gerry Dulac
10:43
I don't think he's Dan McCullers. But I think he's a viable third-round pick

Let’s talk Justin Fields. Doesn’t he have much more potential to be a star for years for the Steelers as opposed to Russell Wilson who is 36 and on the down side of his career? Wilson had a torn lat 2 seasons ago and is at an age where things go wrong suddenly physically, such as the achilles tears of Aaron Rodgers and Kurt Cousins. As such, can you see the Steelers giving Justin Fields some starts in 2024 to see what they have in him and whether to resign him?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
Yes he does, and that's kind of their thinking. But I don't think they are gratuitously going to give him a few starts. That's only going to happen if Wilson plays poorly or gets injured.
Lefty
10:45
Gerry, how long of an extension do you foresee Tomlin receiving this summer? In your opinion has he earned it?
Gerry Dulac
10:46
It's either going to be 2 years or 1 year and a option. Has he earned it? Depends what you want to settle for with your team.
Sal
10:46
Happy Wednesday Gerry! Depending on how the draft goes, do you think FO will consider bringing back Mason Cole and Patrick Peterson?
Gerry Dulac
10:46
Always a possibility

Has any of the new QBs been at the Steelers' facility much this off-season?
Gerry Dulac
10:47
Justin Fields made his first visit just a couple weeks ago to sign his contract. And Russell has been in and out a few times
Stash
10:47
Gerry, which is more likely: Coach T winning another Super Bowl, or Starkey breaking 80 (from the senior's tees)?

Have we really improved at QB?  I would take Mason over Wilson - less turnovers, better pocket presence, smarter quarterback.  While neither Fields or Pickett have dazzled, the results of games show that Kenny is clearly better.  So how have we improved?

I wonder if Justin Fields and his advisors realized what Kenny Pickett and his did not: Geno Smith did pretty well for watching Russ cook for a couple seasons.  Will KP ever see a snap again? Happy Masters Week from Georgia!

Gerry, is there anything worse than all the golf holes in western PA that send you down a large hill off the tee, then send you back up a large hill to the flag?  I realize we have hilly terrain, but come in, such holes are the worst....

So far the only thing that Fields has shown he can do in the NFL is run fast.  That was the same with Devin Bush, Artie Burns, and Jarvis Jones.  Does Tomlin have a blind spot for players that run fast?  Does he need to realize speed is one thing, but understanding how to play in the NFL is more important?

Gerry, do the Oakmont members truly enjoy having their course ready to host the US Open on any given day?  I've got to believe that there are plenty of hack members who have to pick up after registering a snowman and not yet reaching the green....

Does Tomlin need a better defensive coaching staff?  The current group seems to get blown out in playoff games. In addition the player development and drafting has been suspect.  From 2013 to 2019, every 1st round pick was on defense (7 players) and only Watt  has gotten a 2nd contract.  Few mid round picks seem to develop.  6 of 11 defensive starters are either free agents or from trades despite all that investment of draft capital (which has also diluted the offense by not working out and then needing more draft and salary cap investment).

Gerry when Tomlin talks about being "excited about being uncomfortable" (a reference to changes at OC and on the roster) is he acknowledging (consciously or not) that he's been in something of a 'comfort zone' (with personnel he's familiar with) these past few years. I refer especially to Matt Canada, who you pretty well put up a bat signal to get rid of 12 months ago. Was he too 'comfortable' to see the obvious?

Hi Gerry, I believe the Steelers are better off having moved on from Pickett. With that said, I think he will get some starts with the Eagles because of backing up a running quarterback. What say you?

If this is Cam's last year, what type of year do you think he needs to have to make the Hall of Fame - or do you think he already has the resume to make it? I'd love to see him enshrined

Trying to figure how they can not reach for a center in round 1, but still get one in round 2. A trade up is speculated in 2, but could they trade back in 1 to get a 2 or does the chart usually say they'd get a 3 in return for that? Lots of numbers, Gerry, so 10-4, I'm out.

Hi, Gerry. Do you think the team has someone in mind BESIDES Cole or Herbig to backfill the center position before the draft just in case? Perhaps a potential trade or an under-the-radar free agent if there is such a thing?

Hi Gerry, and Good Morning.  I blame the Pirates manager for putting Bednar in this very close game when Bednar didn't have a "normal" Spring training season.

It is now being said that the DL depth in this draft is better than was originally foreseen. What player/players do you see as the more obvious fits to draft to get this DL younger and more talented?

Why does Mr. LA think that Pickett was/is any good. He threw 6 freakin TDs!. Ben that in one game, twice!?? Pickett is a career backup and journey man. I wish him the best of luck, but it was never going to happen for him. Never saw him "flash". Question for you Jerry. Who's the ideal starter for us by season end? Russell (now) or Justin (future)?
