Gerry: signing Joseph-Day was really the only move made in free agency or the draft to bolster a porous run defense.  Is that likely to be a major problem again this year?
Gerry Dulac
10:04
Until they prove they can stop it, it could be, though I'm hesitant to call it a major problem, as you did. I'm not sure drafting Gabriel Rubio is part of the solution, but we'll see.

Gerry: who do you think the Steelers starting edge rushers will be in 2027?  I would hate to see them paying a 33 year old Watt $32m (incremental) while a 25 year old Herbig is playing for another team for probably $18-$22m.
Gerry Dulac
10:05
I don't think it will be the same duo as 2026, but that might be up to Nick Herbig

Hi Gerry. Being a HOF voter, you might have some insight on this. Is it possible Bill Belichick's legacy was tarnished after his team's very poor performance post Brady? Some argue his teams (as a head coach) didn't win much before or after Brady. I guess the same could be said for any HOF coach who won Super Bowls with a HOF QB but this relationship seems to be magnified.
Gerry Dulac
10:08
I don't think his post-Brady record ever came up during our discussions at the Selection Committee meeting. I think Spygate and Deflategate might have contributed to it, even though he wasn't a part of Deflategate. All in all, I just think it was a complete failure --and an embarrassment -- of the committee not to elect him.

Hey Gerry. Compared to Mike Tomlin’s D, how do you think the new staff will run this D? Totally new? A fresh look?
Gerry Dulac
10:09
Yes, a different look, though Mike McCarthy is a big proponent of the 3-4 defense and has said he wants to emulate what Bill Cowher and Dom Capers first installed in 1992.

will you and/or another sports writer from the PG travel to Paris in October to cover the game?  If so, please get your flight ticket soon as airfares are on the rise. Enjoy your coverage

I'm sure we will. And thanx for the travel advice

Gerry: If Tomlin were still here, I would have been shocked if the first team OL didn't have Jones/Cook on the left and Fautanu on the right for at least the first two weeks of training camp thus wasting time in acclimating Fautanu to the left side.  How do you think McCarthy will do it?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
That is going to depend on the readiness of Broderick Jones, which is still up for conjecture at this point

Gerry glad everything worked out for you and the other PG staffers.  I don’t understand the angst fans have about Roger’s coming back as QB.  He gives us competent to very good play at the most important position in football.  One thing Seattle proved last year is you can win a SB without having that MVP QB - just get a competent guy and build out the rest of the team.  I think the Steelers are on the right track for that formula for this season at least.
Gerry Dulac
10:13
I think the angst is rooted in the fans -- and others, believe me -- getting tired of this waiting game. Not in his ability

Hey Gerry! Have you ever seen a 3rd round pick (Dunker) get so much more attention than a first round pick (Ianachor)? Dunker, who I really like is becoming a cult hero before he even takes an NFL snap!
Gerry Dulac
10:13
Haha, I have not.

Does Aaron Rodgers believe he has a future beyond football?  This extended whipsaw of a holdout is destroying a lot of goodwill that will be needed for any post-football ventures he might be planning!

Crap. Keeps closing. 1 more time.     Thanks for the chats, Gerry. Always enjoy. I’m still of the opinion that our QB room is weak, MM influence or not. We still have to maneuver next draft to get that “franchise guy”. Still, we’ll have a rookie, a 1yr guy and a 1+yr guy. If that’s not rebuilding, I don’t know what is. Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:15
Well, if Rodgers comes back, which they expect, you have a 22-year guy and an 8-year guy. Not so weak. And getting a franchise guy isn't always that easy

Why do the Steelers draft quarterbacks knowing they will never let them play because they don't have "experience"? Think about it - what's going to be different in 2027 after another season of Aaron Rogers? The Steelers will once again say Howard/Allar can't play because they have no experience. McCarthy/Khan will say they'd love to have Aaron Rogers back, and they'll wait for him to decide. On and on. Why don't the Steelers have any courage?
Gerry Dulac
10:18
Well, Bill, when you put it that way, maybe nothing. But, barring any injuries, I think you will see Allar and Howard playing 95 percent of the snaps in the preseason .... if not more. And that will be more experience than they were able to build last year.

Good Morning Gerry, When the season starts, what will be the biggest difference we see on the field between Tomlin's teams & McCarthy's.
Gerry Dulac
10:19
I can't answer that now. Like you, I'll need to see it in training camp, and maybe once the regular-season begins.

Hi Gerry. What has become of the world of professional sports (NFL, Steelers in this case), where fans and talking heads actively advocate for losing — tanking — as in the best long term interest of a team?  Of course it works out, rarely. Call me old school, but I think its disgusting.  These trillion dollar franchises owe it to themselves, their players, and their fans to put the most competitive product on the field as possible year in and year out.  What are your thoughts on this topic? Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
10:20
It's not only disgusting, it's ill-founded. There isn't an NFL coach alive who is interested in losing to get a better draft position. You know why? Because he won't be around after that to draft a player with that better position.

Texans exposed how Rodger’s now plays in big games and how a dominant defense wins games. Wouldn’t it be a smarter move to spend his $15 M on someone on defense that can stop the run? Trade or FA. Status quo doesn’t cut it anymore.
Gerry Dulac
10:23
You mean unlike how he played in Detroit, in Ireland against the Vikings and two games against Baltimore?

Good morning Gerry. Two questions today please. How do you say HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO in French? The return game made some strides last year after a very poor recent history. I'm excited to see how it improves this year. What would a top five return game look like?

Hi Gerry, if the Steelers were guaranteed to have a losing season, with say 4 games to go, would they bench Rogers and start one of the young QB's for the rest of the season? Could this be a problem with AR?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
It depends. If they are guaranteed of having a losing season because the quarterback isn't playing well, then they would have already replaced him to try and play better

Gerry, should the NFL change the rule that gives your opponent a touchback if you fumble through the end zone? It seems like and incredibly harsh penalty for basically fumbling out of bounds.
Gerry Dulac
10:26
It doesn't bother me

Hey Gerry, thanks for doing these and grateful to hear you all are still able to entertain and inform us. I am not a college football junkie, I watch big games and bowls/playoffs, but not a weekly watcher so I am not always up to speed on players until draft time. I am not comparing Drew Allar to Josh Allen from a talent nor a potential perspective. What I am asking is, didn't JA have similar issues entering the draft as well? Hasn't good NFL coaching helped him?  Point being, there's a chance DA has some untapped potential and may be an NFL starter?
Gerry Dulac
10:31
Josh Allen played against lesser competition and was considered very raw. Yes there is a chance, but there was still enough upside to Allen that he was a No. 1 pick. Not so with Allar.

Gerry, is there a chance Roman Wilson is not on the 53 man roster come September? Little/redundant special teams value, and 2 new receivers, makes me think he could be on the outside looking in when training camp begins.
Gerry Dulac
10:32
I don't think so. I still think he has a chance to be a good player.

Gerry, so glad to see all of you still here in May and beyond. Dunno what I'd have done without the only sane sports news source in the area.
