Hello Gerry! I feel like Porter has made his point but that if he missed the bengals game — a game he was drafted to impact — then he is now screwing his teammates and the organization and he’s showing you who he actually is. I hope he gets better advice this week than what’s been on offer the last few months. He’s never going to recoup the +$20M he’ll have passed on this season and he might be about to burn bridges with his hometown and employer. Your thoughts?

In the post-Ben Mike Tomlin era, regardless of the offensive coordinator, the strategy was to get the ball out quickly due to shaky offensive line. In watching the Patriots game and reading the comments of AR and HCMM it seems both are looking for more down field passing opportunities with more 5 and 7 step drop backs. In theory that opens up the offense and delights fans.  But how can HCMM and AR actually execute that concept with the personnel they have?  One reason HCMT won more games than he should have is because he lived in the real world and was able to minimize the weaknesses of his teams.  Can McCarthy adjust similarly given what he has learned in two weeks of watching his team and the limits created by his personnel?

How does Joey Porter’s dad let his son get into this position. Of all the people in his sons life, he has to know the business of the NFL and the resolve of the Steelers. He is under contract for 3-4 million and the Steelers offer him $27 million a year and he tries to play games?

Good morning Gerry. The defense is "good enough" even without  jpj. I believe the #1 problem is our offensive line. If our opponents only score in the teens, we'll lose most games. Now, how do we fix it? Or are we on our way to a high 2027 draft pick? Thank you sir.

The defense has not missed JPJ in either of the first two games. I'm willing to give it time. It's only been two games. And they are 1-1. Ask the Chargers and Texans how they feel after 2 games.

Gerry:  the Steelers are $9m over next year's projected cap with only 40 players under contract.  They don't have a veteran QB, Queen, or Porter on the 2027 books yet.  Now they will try to "restructure" their way out of this problem, but they may have to make cuts.  An aging, over-rated $21m per year slot corner would be an obvious cut.  Is this why Ramsey is "mentoring" Porter out of town?

I'm not worried about next year's cap, and rest assured, they're not either. They will deal with that then. Yes, Ramsey might be on his final year. And, because they didn't even consider extending him, Queen could be too. And that would be too bad.

Gerry, we have seen Steeler O lines take time to gel in the past, and while there are obvious issues, do you think that gelling will eventually happen this season. I think we should bite the bullet and put Imax in there now. Hopefully it won't get our 42 year old QB killed before we gel.

Gerry: the offensive line has had three #1s and a #2 in the Khan era and is probably the worst in the league.  The WR group has used two #2s (one in the DKM trade) and a #3 and spent about $53m of AAV on outside additions and is probably the worst in the league.  Which position group is the bigger indictment of the Khan man?  Or can the OL flops be blamed on Weidl and the WR on Tomlin?

Oh my, such negative vitriol after two games my friend. I think it's far from the truth that the OL and WRs are the worst in the league. But blame is like Christmas vacation homework -- it gets assigned all the time.

Morning Gerry. Keep up the good work. Really enjoy your Steelers coverage! It doesn’t appear our receivers are being schemed open. Looks like a lot of 1 on 1 routes where being able to create separation is critical. I know it’s early in the season but there doesn’t seem to be much offensive creativity going on. What’s your take? Thanks

LW, I haven't paid enough attention to confirm the WRs aren't "being schemed open." I had absolutely no problem with the game plan and "creativity" in the first game when they repeatedly attacked deep (and didn't get much help from the WRs and officials). I'll wait before I start to share the same concern/negativity/panic that lots of people in te chat seem to have. But, then, that's why I love ya.

Hi Gerry - is it the switching of positions? The loss of the O-line coach? The arrow was pointing up last year with our young O-line…now it looks JV. Are we in big trouble with this group or am I living in my fears?

Morning Gerry.  You’ve continually stated you felt good about the offensive line.  Given the significant investment in draft capital and their poor performances the first two games, when should the Steelers expect a decent return on their investments?

Maybe when Iheanachor gets in there. The injury to Broderick Jones and the loss of Seumalo in free agency did not help this line. Fautanu is probably better suited at right tackle than left. There are issues that need some adjusting.

Gerry:  Here is what I don't understand about the Steelers unwillingness to declare Porter healthy and then suspend him if he won't play.  It is alleged that they are afraid he will file a grievance and be able to claim that he is hurt.  Ok, so if he wins that grievance they will owe him his full salary.  So what, they are paying that to him now anyway, what's the harm in this hard line approach?  The benefit seems obvious of sending a message to existing and future players that they won't tolerate such behavior.  What would they be doing if they were currently paying him big $$ to stage this farcical injury "hold out"?

Whoever "alleged" they are afraid he will file a grievance has no idea what they are saying. That is not true at all. But he was declared healthy enough to play but Joey says his back is hurting. What are they supposed to do. I'm sure there are enough people in this chat who have had an MRI or X-ray that revealed nothing wrong but still had pain for some unexplained reason. I'm not defending JPJ, I'm just saying it does happen. As for a message, they sent one, which was more a reminder: You're not going to win that battle with them. And that's why they take the stance they do. And one more thing: Did it dawn on anyone that maybe the team thinks he's hasn't earned the right to position himself like this? I mean, he's not TJ Watt or Cam Heyward after all.
