Ok kids, we're going to start in just a few minutes....
10:05
OK here we go....sorry for the delay

Good morning. It seems like signing Zac Gentry off of the Bengal’s practice squad is a no brainer given the injuries and the perceived “lack of physicality” with this team. Why do you think this hasn’t happened?
Gerry Dulac
10:06
You would think and, to be honest, not sure why it hasn't happened. They need a TE on the 53-man roster. Darnell Washington is the only one. Connor Heyward is not a TE

Do you think it is time to play Joey Porter Jr? If so who would you replace? Also is there a reason why our corners do not play more press coverage?
Gerry Dulac
10:07
Yeah, because they are not capable. But Porter is, which is why he should be playing and use Patrick Peterson the way you initially intended -- in nickel, in dime, at safety; some spot where he is playing with his eyes in the backfield.

Good morning Gerry. Watched very little of the Houston game since it wasn't on locally in Phila. Only saw r
Is it me or simply the steelers offense has no week to week strategy?
Gerry Dulac
10:08
I know it seems that way, but, believe it or not, they have a different strategy and game plan every week. Hard to think, huh?

Hi Gerry-  Do you think the following is what happened in off-season between AR and MT?  MT remained steadfast in his support of Canada. AR had serious doubts.  AR left decision up to MT but told him if repeat of prior year both of them would be gone?
Gerry Dulac
10:10
No I don't, but I will say this -- Art Rooney II lets his head coach make all staff decisions, almost without fail. I say 'almost' because at some point, probably after the season, there will be more than a discussion if this continues. And, don't worry, Mike Tomlin won't be the one who is gone

Is it possible that the downfall of our defense is related to the puked offense under MC?  I’m assuming our defense isn’t being significantly challenged during practices.
Gerry Dulac
10:11
Of course it is. I'm not giving them a pass, but the defense is on the field A LOT because of all the three-and-outs by the offense. At some point, that is as demoralizing as it is fatiguing.
Tomlin the Politician
10:11
Tomlin said yesterday that we lost the game because we weren’t tough enough. We have been soft for years. We used to be a tough, physical team but not anymore. He never mentioned preparation, game plan, or play calling. Did he believe those were acceptable? Is it ego that won’t let him admit his faults or take accountability? Or is it just plain incompetence?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
He did mention preparation. He said the short weeks with prime time games kept him from putting the pads on in practice, something coaches at least like to do once a week early in the season. So they will put them on today
Substandard
10:13
Tomlin annually underachieves and his team is soft. This was never the Steelers Way but now it is. How is this acceptable to Art II? Does he not care about winning and is he just happy making a profit? He seems like Nutting but at least Nutting changes up his front office and staff. Not to mention the Pirates players show more heart, effort, and desire than Tomlin’s players.
Gerry Dulac
10:14
Congrats! That might be the first time someone compared the Steelers and Pirates and ranked the Pirates' approach, heart and effort ahead of the Steelers.

The worst thing a team can do with a new QB is to give him no protection. Shame on that and they had the whole off season to fix that problem. This appears to have sucked the life out Kenny Pickett's game.  He's not the big guy like Ben, Terry or Josh Allen.  He's competitive though.  Would it be better to bench him and let him watch Trubisky fight for his job?  Bty, Harris ran all over the field in Tuscaloosa b/c he had HOLES.
Gerry Dulac
10:14
And maybe sometimes that protection breaks down because the QB is not sure where to go with the ball. Or, as what happened on that fourth-and-1, he rolled right toward the pressure.

Thank You for doing these chats & your insights regarding the Steelers - hope you’re mojo is high today!

I think everyone agrees that our offense under MC is too predictable & lacks imagination.  I would say that our defense is equally predictable following the departure of Dick L who orchestrated Blitz Burg with lots of intricate blitz packages.  Just sitting back in a zone doesn’t work when we get no pressure on QB.
Gerry Dulac
10:16
I hear ya. They didn't get pressure on CJ Stroud, which I found amazing considering the patch-work offensive line the Texans were using. But they have been getting pressure. And I think they sit in zone a lot because they dont have press-man corners, though they do have one on the bench.

Gerry- IMO if the answer Tomlin gave to the 4th and one call was the real reason for the call that speaks volumes about MT’s fundamental cluelessness on offensive play calling which perhaps explains why he appears to be the only person on the planet who doesn’t think Canada should be fired.   Some beat writer needs to press Canada on that call as well. I am sure his lip service response will be if the call worked no one would be second guessing it.   He and MT are the laughingstocks of the NFL.   Come AR/ do what any good businessman would do.  Cut your losses.
Gerry Dulac
10:18
Well, you have at least figured out what Canada's response will be tomorrow when we get a shot at him. Once again, the problem I have with the call is not having Pickett under center. Putting him in the shotgun reduces his options and makes it an easier read for the defense.

Gerry  What did you think of Canada's comment last week that the Steeler offense was not built to come from behind?  Really?  And whose fault is it that they can not do this in today's offense explosive NFL
Gerry Dulac
10:19
I'll say this -- as surprising as it was, it was 100 percent accurate. I know...really??

Major changes are needed in the organization including replacing the entire coaching staff.  The team has become unprepared, soft, predictable, undisciplined, and not physical.  We need a hard nosed coach like Cowher, not one that wants to look cool and be friends with the players.  I feel the perfect man to change the culture of this team is available - Jon Gruden.  Do you think Gruden would be interested and would you pursue him?
Gerry Dulac
10:20
I thought Gruden -- Tomlin's friend -- would be the perfect choice for OC. But I think he might be a little toxic to hire.

Everybody loves TJ Watt, but he came up small last week and rarely slams the door shut in big games.  Most of his stats seems to be in blowouts. Will he ever become a Door Slammer?
Gerry Dulac
10:21
I was surprised how ineffective he was against the Texans, playing against backup tackles and in front of his brother. I was already counting three sacks before the game even started. He knows he didn't play well at all.

If the Steelers continue to perform at a high school level how long before some significant changes take place.
Gerry Dulac
10:22
Tony, I'd hold off on thinking significant changes will take place.

Gerry  I never played or coached football but I can tell (with this offense) whether they are going to run or pass.  Is this offense too predictable for todays NFL?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
Based on the way they played, it certainly seems that way, eh?

Mike Tomlin hasn’t won a playoff game in 7 years which I believe is the longest such streak by the Steelers since 1972.  His time should be up in Pittsburgh.  Are there even any Tomlin believers left?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
That is correct. Longest drought since they first made the playoffs in 72. Last playoff win was 2016. And in their last three playoff appearances, they have have allowed 42, 45 and 48 points. That's a 45-point average, in case you're bad at math.

Is there a realistic scenario where AJRII and, with the support of AJRII the front office, takes a more assertive role in the selection of a new OC from outside the organization for 2024, who may not be the preferred choice of Mike Tomlin, and Tomlin then getting ruffled by restrictions on his authority to hire assistants that potentially leads Tomlin to threaten to resign as was the case when Dan Rooney ordered Chuck Noll to fire assistant coach Jed Hughes at the end of the 1988 season
Gerry Dulac
10:27
Sure there is, though I don't expect that to happen. AR2 leaves coaching decisions up to Mike Tomlin, though he does have to sign off on the hire. That being said, I think there were some Rooney fingerprints on the hiring of Todd Haley.
Hall of Shame
10:27
Any idea why Tomlin is called a future Hall of Famer?  Many coaches can finish at .500 or above in the regular season.  He has won a playoff game in only 4 of his 17 seasons.  That's over a 75% failure rate.  Is this the new standard for the Hall of Fame??  That's almost as low as the standard that Rooney and Tomlin have for the organization.
