OK kids, one more cup of coffee and we'll get started...

OK, let's get started...

"Always open" is a trendy cool thing to say for WR. Isn't it the responsibility of the offensive coaches to explain to Pickens that he needs to actually be open? How do you get through to him that he is a professional and playing not nearly good enough?
Gerry Dulac
9:56
Did you say "how do you get through to him???"

Going by Pickens mantra of "always open"....doesn't he drop a lot of easy balls?
Gerry Dulac
9:57
But he does catch a lot of crazy ones

Gerry: a lot of the problems defending the run the last two weeks seem to be caused by opponents going to 3 WRs on 1st down or 2nd and short.  The Steelers primarily use their nickel defense in that situation and leave themselves exposed to power running.  Does it make sense to expose yourself to the run just to keep Moon out there and bring Bishop in?  Shouldn't they stick with 3 DL, take Moon (or even the weak against the run Herbig) out and maybe bring in an extra safety instead of Bishop?  They could still use their traditional nickel or dime in obvious passing situations.

Gerry: it was widely believed that Keanu Benton would be a force this year.  I can't say that I have noticed him at all.  Is he just another in a long line of high picks that flash as rookies and then regress?  Jones seems clearly to be in this camp along with the likes of Burns, Bush, Claypool, Pickett etc.  Why does this happen so often now?
Gerry Dulac
9:59
Now, I disagree with you here. I have no problem with Benton. I wasn't expecting him to be Chris Jones anyway

Good morning Mr. Dulac.  Wednesdays are great because of your chats.  GPs eye tape comment of Open (bleeping) Always might be overlooked more if he would always Catch (bleeping) Football and Secure (bleeping) Football.

I'm not the biggest fan of TomlinBall, but also think that it may be best for this Steelers team.  Do you see the Fields, Harris, Pickens triplet in the top half of the league? At best they could get us to .500, but wouldn't it be more likely a few more turnovers and worn down defense would likely lead to an extra loss or two?
Gerry Dulac
10:02
If you mean that trio in the top half of the league collectively, you might be being kind. As for the TOs and "word-down defense," that's true of any team.

Gerry – greetings from the land down under! How do you feel about the sameness of the Steelers offense after 5 games with Aurther Smith compared to last year's offensive production? Maybe it's just Mike Tomlin and the players and not the OC after all?
Gerry Dulac
10:03
Well, Bill Down Under, I just checked the offensive production after 5 games last year to five games this year, and hard as it is to believe the offensive numbers are better this year in every category. I didn't know you were a member of the Matt Canada fan club?

Hey Gerry! I see ppl blaming TA for the defensive lapses but doesn’t MT have his hands on it? With that said, do you think he heeds Minkah’s plea to “simplify” so this defense can play how they should?!
Gerry Dulac
10:04
Yes he does. And maybe he should.

Mr. Dulac. Good morning.  Tomlinson excuse for GP's snap management was done to (paraphrasing here) be more productive.  Could that be code for "sometimes we are better off without GP on the field?
Gerry Dulac
10:05
I think you can read in to it anything you want, because clearly the reason he is giving is not the true reason

Hi Gerry:  Thanks for the chats.    I was watching Lamar Jackson closely last week comparing him to Justin Fields style of play.  It appears obvious (at least to me) that Jackson usually drops back 5 yards farther than Fields on passes.  He scans the field so much better and gives him more room to move around.  Fields often drops back 2-3 yds. like a Statue QB and takes too many sacks.  He loses so much opportunity to use his talents.  Can that be fixed?
Gerry Dulac
10:06
You are right about the deep drops by Jackson. But he does that because he can, which is why he's a two-time league MVP

Good morning Gerry, the Steelers sit at 3 & 2 and appear to be lucky to have caught Atlanta & Denver early. The defense has been a disappointment & they have a QB they don’t trust, so how far away is Wilson from playing and will it make a difference?
Gerry Dulac
10:07
I think it will be soon. And I'm sure it will make a difference because, after all, that's why they went and acquired him in the first place. He's not a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl winner by accident
Fake tomlin
10:07
Tomlin would be an excellent politician, lies all the time and uses non sensical phrases to confuse everyone. The steelers “culture” is do whatever you want as long as you’re talented.  Classic top down management flaw.  Do you believe a change is necessary?  Even if it’s not probable.
Gerry Dulac
10:08
In an election year, you make a good comparison

Hi Gerry:  Thanks again for the chats.    Like it or not after 5 games Arthur Smith’s Offense is performing very similar to the Steeler fans favorite chew toy Matt Canada. Short runs into walls for no gain, check downs, lots of pre-snap penalties, and little to nothing in the middle of the field.  Maybe it’s the poor play of the Offensive line and/or the WRs are rarely open, or Tomlin?
Gerry Dulac
10:08
What was the last part of your point...??

Different QBs, OCs, etc. Similar results. Do you think Tomlin would ever consider a change in his own philosophy?

Hi Gerry.  Thanks four your chats.  Seems like MT has another receiver he cannot control or is willing to properly discipline.  Is this one of his major faults?
Gerry Dulac
10:11
What did he say yesterday in his weekly news conference..."sometimes two instances is a pattern."
Steve
10:11
GM Gerry. Mike Tomlin is famous for saying "we want volunteers, not hostages." But could it be possible that Mike Tomlin's lack of discipline, and not holding certain players accountable is enabling them to become hostages?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
Well, maybe this time he's holding Pickens accountable. Nothing gets a message across like cutting a guy's playing time.
IUP Dave

Mr Dulac.  I don't have the ability to see the "all 22" tape.  I am curious that in some of the still shots of the game against the Cowboys receivers were open deep down the middle. Did Fields just miss them, or did they come open after the ball had already been delivered?
Gerry Dulac
10:13
Probably a little of both. But he also had Connor Heyward and Darnell Washington open down the field and overthrew each
Zamo

Gerry, think it’s fair to say the organization failed this year from top to bottom managing the WR room.  What can be done at this point to turn this ship around?  Last, based on your observations, does the locker room want fields to keep the job (I certainly do) or is Russ really in play?  The players must have a lean.  Cheers bud
Gerry Dulac
10:14
I don't think the players are anywhere near the point where they want one quarterback over the other right now. But the WR room, to your question, is not in a good spot.

10:14
Hi Gerry, would it make sense to slide ILB Patrick Queen over to OLB to help replace Highsmith, Herbig and Leal? PQ is athletic, and maybe he gets a 'splash play' or two.
Gerry Dulac
10:15
No. He is not that type of player. Tomlin was asked a similar question yesterday if Payton Wilson could be moved to outside and he emphatically said no.
