Hi Gerry I am pretty excited about the amount of cap room the Steelers will have next year after the Lev Bell saga and some others falling off. Could you anticipate the Steelers cutting Marcus Gilbert as well given that he would only count as 900k dead cap money vs approximately 8 or 9 million in his final year?

It's possible, but not likely

Play calling on the game-winning/losing goal line drives last two weeks? Ben? Fichtner? If Ben, too much ego getting involved? Run. The. Ball.

Oh yeah, let's put the ball in the hands of the running back with 11 starts on his resume rather than the $100 million QB with two Super Bowl rings and more wins than any quarterback of his generation other than Tom Brady

Steelers have an adequate pass rush. You would think it force more bad throws by the QB. Why aren’t there more takeaways?

I would agree...puzzling

Are reporters made privy to how the players grade-out internally by the coaches?   Wondering whether the D's perceived improvement is being borne out on their internal measurements, or is it just coincidence that they've held opposing offenses to lower point totals?   Are they playing better or does the box score just look better?
Gerry Dulac
11:29
I think their play -- and the box score -- speaks for itself

Happy Holidays, Gerry.  Thanks for the chats as always.  We know the D is better but not great, so am I wrong to think this team can only go so far as the offense and #7 go?  In other words, the team really needs to score 25+ to win, if not 30 vs. the likes of the Pats, Saints, Chiefs, Chargers, Rams, etc.

To a degree, you are correct. We saw that last year in the postseason, especially the Super Bowl, where defense went out the window. You do't have to be a shutdown, dominating defense to win a Super Bowl. You just have to be timely and opprtunistic, kind of like how they performed on those last four possessions in Jax -- force three-and-outs and get the ball back to your offense.

If this collection of players again fizzle out in the playoffs, do you extend Ben or just let him play out his contract and spread $ across the roster and roll the dice with the QB kids?
Gerry Dulac

What do you think...really?

Gerry, I know it's against our team philosophy, but do you see us making a potential splash via free agency or trade (for player or trade up in the draft) for an impact defender? Seems we are a splash player away on defense, a void that hasn't been filled since Shazier got hurt. I just hope we don't continue to overlook this critical area of need
Gerry Dulac

Nope

Gerry, with the lack of a consistent third receiver and Alejandro Villanueva's history at the position, why have they steelers not sent him on more routes? Did Todd Haley not realize this? He had never run a play with him. Why did know one know about this until Randy Fichter got here? He seems like he could solve some red zone problems if he disguised what he was doing.
Gerry Dulac
11:32
Yes he did, several years ago in Seattle. Plus, it's hard to disguise a 6-foot-8, 320-pound mountain of a man
11:33
OK kids, we out of time. Thanx for the questions. Good chat
