Why is it that a 28 yd field goal is considered an easy chip shot, but when a 15 yd penalty is added before an extra point the kick becomes perilous?
Gerry Dulac
10:14
Now that's some food for thought!

Looking at the overall record, the offensive and defensive rankings, along with the eye test, is this the worst all around Steelers team you have covered during your time on the beat?
Gerry Dulac
10:16
You forgot one very key element -- there is no Ben Roethlisberger.
Billy D

it is hard to believe the Rooney’s weren’t prepared two or three years ago for the departure of Ben..knowing that Ben was the biggest reason for the Steelers success
Gerry Dulac
10:17
They were prepared -- they were prepared for a tough transition. Not everybody has Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers and Andrew Luck waiting in the wins.

Hi Gerry. I know you don't evaluate college players in season so my question is more general. I'm asking this because I've been paying close attention to the defensive tackle from Georgia, Jalen Carter. In every game I've watched him play this year he seems to only flash occasionally. I also noticed he's not on the field a lot. Of course television isn't the place to evaluate talent. Back to my question, when you evaluate talent on the defensive and offensive lines what do you look for?
Gerry Dulac

Offensive linemen in college are tough to evaluate for NFL people sometimes because the style of play in college and what they are asked to do can be so much different. Defensive linemen is a lot easier -- athletic guys who can handle blockers, shed blockers and make plays.

Btw, why does it seem that the Ravens are always a step or two ahead of us on free agency, draft/player evaluations and development?  It also seems to me that we desire their brand of football as an organization and fan base.  Just saying…
Gerry Dulac
10:23
BTW, I agree with your assessment 110 percent, especially for the types of defensive players they add. Calais Campbell, Justin Houston, Roquan Smith. But I don't think the Steelers desire to be like the Ravens. I just think the two organizations have always been very similar in how they operate, which is why they always seem to be successful.

Even though this season is a dissapointment in many regards, I do feel good about the new direction of the new GM and assistants. Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:23
Let's see how everything proceeds from this point forward, but I like the different mindset in the front office

Steelers are 2.5 point underdogs at home. Surprising to me. Do you think Steelers will be a favorite in any game for the rest of the season?
Gerry Dulac
10:25
Probably not too many, mainly because nearly every team they face the rest of the way has a better record.

Gerry, is there any basis for an Offensive group like the Steelers (both that side of the ball and their current profile) to watch the play calling by prolific offenses like the Chiefs, and try to mirror play designs they use to perfection? Aside from Kelce the Chiefs "talent" would not be considered so far ahead of what Pitt has.
Gerry Dulac
10:25
I disagree. Their talent is far superior to what the Steelers have, starting at QB.

Morning. Question. I'm beginning to wonder if the Steelers patience with coaches and managers isn't more a direct result of their unique collaboration between the owner, GM and coach? When the owner is as present and involved as Art II, isn't it harder to hold folks accountable when he's often a third of the decision-making process? And perhaps the Steelers are different. Most owners would just sacrifice the others as scapegoats, and maybe the Rooneys don't feel that's a fair "way" to go about things?
Gerry Dulac
10:26
I actually think that's a good thing, not a bad thing. It is something Dan Rooney made a practice of, and nobody complained then.

With the Steelers trade of Chase Claypool, the Steelers are lacking at depth at WR. Are they looking to incorporate more 21 personnel to allow for more mismatches in the passing game and the possibly allow for more beef upfront in the running game?
Gerry Dulac
10:27
They can only hope. There is no question they need to run the ball more, line :Pickett under center and stop him from averaging 33 attempts a game -- 44 attempts in games where he starts and finishes.

Hi Gerry   With the new front office in place, do you see a possibility that the influence in the drafting room by MT May decrease given the recent history of talent evaluation by the former regime
Gerry Dulac
10:28
No. I think it will be the same

Did Tomlin basically force the team to vote Harris a captain at the beginning of only his second season and, if so, was it a mistake?
Gerry Dulac
10:28
I don't know that, but given his partiality to Harris I wouldn't be surprised if he had some influence there. And I don't think it's wrong if he did.

Was Chase Claypool in fact a drag on the team? He seemed immature and though he was big body, he was poor pass catcher. Agree?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
He was a drag on the field

Hey Gerry.  There has been lots of talk that Colbert hasn't drafted well recently.  When Colbert was with Tomlin they never missed (Ben, Troy, Heath).  When Tomlin took over, they missed more than they hit (Burns, Jones, Ziggy, Bush).  Did Colbert just lose his touch....or is the Tomlin influence what has hurt of drafting as an organization?
Gerry Dulac
10:29
Who said Tomlin took over??
Bill
10:30
Do you think Chicago's second round pick for Claypool was a better choice than a second and a 6/7 from the Packers?
Gerry Dulac
10:33
You will find the answer at the end of the season. The Steelers are counting on the Bears' No. 2 pick being higher than Green Bay's No. 2 pick. I think that's a good bet.

Do you buy in to the narrative that Tomlin hires coaches who aren’t a threat to challenge / replace him?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Not at all

For the longest time, there were very few players that left the Steelers and still had a productive career (Woodson being an exception).  Under Tomlin, it seems many players that leave find success elsewhere.  Is it scheme?  Chance of scenery?  Or do we (specifically the current coaches) just not get the best out of our players anymore?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Like....??

With Colbert retiring and Weidl in as GM, is this the refresh we need to put together a dominant team again?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
Andy Weidl is the assistant GM, and the Steelers can only hope their new regime is as good as Colbert's tenure.

10:35
I know Kenny said the players and coaches had a meeting where they aired stuff out, do you expect anything to be different tho?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
Nope. If it is, it's not because of a meeting. Most over-rated nonsense in sports -- players-only meetings. You only hear about them when a team wins.

Why won't Tomlin acknowledge Harris' injury?  IS it because he downplayed it in the preseason and won't admit to that?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
He doesn't acknowledge a lot of injuries. And, as I've stated many times before, in some instance it's a disservice to the player.
