OK, kids, we're gonna start our chat in a few minutes so get ready....
11:04
OK, let's get started...

I read a lot about how Tomlin should be fired I think he's a top 3 coach and Haley has kept Ben healthier the players are the ones missing tackles and dropping passes.
Gerry Dulac
11:05
You're not reading that from anyone who knows better. And, if you are, well, then, they don't know any better. It's more likely Pittsburgh will get a Super Bowl than Tomlin getting fired, and that ain't happening either.
Jeff
11:05
I know its said a lot but shouldn't we be playing Conner more give him game experience take some load of Bell he has outside speed that Bell doesn't maybe 5-10 snaps a game.
Gerry Dulac
11:06
That's not happening either, tho I agree with your basic premise. Maybe 3-4 carries a game for sure

Gerry, with the tackling issues, have you heard any rumblings of the steelers or other teams putting pressure on the NFL for more padded practices or this just a pipe dream?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
Nope. Pipe dream Bob in Canada

Assuming nobody regresses, do you think a really good safety is all this defense is missing to make it Number 1 unit again....not that being in the top 5 is a bad thing.
Gerry Dulac
11:07
They are No. 4 right now and the only defense in the league that averages fewer than 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing. That's pretty darn good.
KJ
11:07
In your opinion, Gerry, what seems to be the reason behind Artie Burns regression this year? He played much better as the season wore on last year.
Gerry Dulac
11:07
I'm not sure. I don't know necessarily that he has regressed, but he hasn't played well the past couple games.
Bob in Canada
11:07
Hi Gerry! I understand and appreciate the philosophy of hanging onto your good coaches. I have been reserving judgement on Carnell Lake due to the defense being in rebuild mode.  Do you think judgement should still be reserved for a bit longer, maybe another season or 2?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
No, I think you can pass judgement. They're pretty good. 4th overall, second in sacks, 4th in scoring, and, like I said, the 200/100 stat
KJ
11:09
Since Vontaze Burfict continues to ignore and disregard the rules for safe play and appears intent on injuring other players, particularly Steelers' players, do you anticipate some sort of "event" with him on MNF?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
You never know with that dude

Playing devil's advocate... If the Steelers lose decisively to the Patriots this season and possibly in the playoffs who suffers the consequences
Gerry Dulac
11:11
Well, if they lose to them in the playoffs, it will be in the AFC Champ game, and I don't think anyone of consequence will be fired.

What is going on with Artie? I know sometimes you have to take a step back to move two forward, but this isn't good. Do you think he is being overly aggressive and getting caught or is he not as good as we all hoped he would be?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
He is being overly aggressive. I think he's trying to make splash plays and he is getting caught out of position.
KJ
11:11
Good morning, Gerry, I know it wasn't flagged and it was a huge play for the Steelers, but has the NFL sent any word that TJ Watt will be fined for the helmet-to-helmet hit on Hundley?
Gerry Dulac
11:12
Not yet, but he might be. Even though I thought it was unintentional.

Maybe the O hasn't lived up to expectations, but in 44 quarters played, Steelers have been held scoreless in only 7 of them. Not bad. At least they don't go cold for long stretches. For comparison's sake, Pats held scoreless in 5.
Gerry Dulac
11:15
For all their inconsistencies early in the season, the Steelers rank 7th in the league in total offense. So it hasn't been abysmal. Scoring and offense are down this year league-wide, defenses are up. The Steelers are still better than 79 percent of the league.

Tomlin calls the secondary play 'popcorn' and 'hiccups'. To me it looks more like severe dementia and projectile vomiting. Will anyone (scouts, coaches, or players) ever be held accountable for this deplorable play? How long must our linebackers have to drop into coverage because the secondary's not getting the job done?
Gerry Dulac
11:15
Well, I think it might be somewhere in between. If it's popcorn, it's burnt popcorn. the type that gets a little scorched at the bottom of the pan.

Gerry, love the chats and all of the great work you do!  Do you foresee the Steelers signing Mike Mitchell to another contract once his 5 years are up?  I never miss a game and I'm failing to recall any significant plays he has made during his tenure here.  Any significant POSITIVE plays that is.   Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:16
It depends if they draft a potential replacement this year, which I think they will. He is good through 2018. But he hasn't been a game-changing safety, that's for sure.

Collinsworth consistently praised Ben's ability to recognize coverages. Then we hear that Ben would tell AB to run a different route than what was called, with successful results. Could all the fans who think that Ben doesn't study and can't read defenses be wrong? I'm shocked Gerry. Shocked!
Gerry Dulac
11:17
I don't know how many fans think that.
KJ

Is there any update on JuJu's hamstring injury? Do you expect him to be active for Monday vs. the Bengals?
Gerry Dulac
11:17
Yes

Gerry,  lots of talk about lack of sack performance from OSLB of late but my hope is that this has been a deliberate strategy to allow Tuit & Hargrave to get used to pushing from the middle so they can disrupt the guy with the deflated balls during the playoffs (yes I'm looking ahead).  Is this wishful thinking or does it have merit?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
I don't think what they've been doing in terms of a rush has anything to do with specifically getting ready for NE. It's more a by product of having players who get pressure up the middle. But, if you REALLY want to see them excel, they need to get better pressure from the edge from Watt and especially Dupree.

Does anyone associated with the NFL know the real definition of offensive pass interference? Late in the game, a Green Bay receiver pushed the Steeler defender to the ground and the receiver had his arms fully extended in that process. If that one isn't offensive pass interference then that indiscretion doesn't exist.  There seems to be too much inconsistency with game officials with regard to this type of penalty.
Gerry Dulac
11:21
I couldn't agree with you more. That was the most flagrant example of offensive pass interference I've seen this year and it wasn't called. Just convinced me that it's completely judgemental and there's no definition.

Does the no-huddle offense that Ben seems to favor take off now till the Super Bowl?  Seems like Big Ben has his confidence back when running it.   8TDs last 2 weeks!
Gerry Dulac
11:21
It might. But I wouldn't count on it being a normal mode of attack.
Reeder
11:22
Why does coach Lake continually get a pass for lousy secondary play? Seems like we blame lack of talent when they play bad and this team has plenty of talent there now. Should he be called out?
Gerry Dulac
11:23
I'm not saying the guys they have  in the secondary sdon't have talent, but I wouldn't go overboard and talk about ALL the talent they have back there. But let's also wait till Joe Haden gets back.
