OK kids, we're going to start our chat in just a bit so get ready

OK, here we go.....

In your opinion will it take a "franchise" quarterback not past his prime to see this offense truly open up?  We saw it open up with Big Ben, but my concern is even if we find one, Coach T will still adamantly insist on protecting the ball at all costs and this not unleashing their full potential.

Wow, first one in the store and he delivers a very perceptive take! Bravo

Why is Tomlin considered a future Hall of Fame coach? He won a Super Bowl. Great, but you can't put every Super Bowl winning coach into the HOF. He won a playoff game in like 4 out of 19 seasons, likely 20 after this season. No playoff wins in the past 9 seasons, soon to be 10. He had an incredible trio of Ben, Bell and Brown that he got nowhere with. He has no coaching tree from all these years. He hasn't contributed anything to the league, it's not like he designed some sort of defensive scheme that teams across the league adopted. Really his only accomplishments are being a coach players like, having a long career because you work for someone who is afraid of making head coaching changes, and not having a losing season. Which is great, but really it means you've been consistent in being just above average. I'm sure you could put many other coaches in this same position and they would have the had the same lack of accomplishments over all these years.

Hello Gerry, Your pregame radio work with Mike and Bob is outstanding! Since I'm not creative enough to think of a new name, please give me something. Anything?  Eternal Steeler Optimist

This guy is more than perceptive, he's terrific. Optimism? Hard to find some after Sunday, but I always harken back to Dick LeBeau's famous words, "I've seen sicker dogs than this get well in a hurry."

Gerry. In your opinion, should this entire team be blown up including the coach and start new?
Gerry Dulac
10:00
That's a bit extreme I'd say

Very few people are talking about the real problem with the Steelers. Look at their top 3 draft picks in each of the last 10 years. You would be hard pressed to find another team with a worse draft performance. This is why we are scrambling to plug holes with veterans past their prime or overpaying for good players
Gerry Dulac
10:03
Their drafts, on the whole, have been pretty good the past three years. And what's wrong with Fautanu and Harmon? Just because they're lineman and you don't see them making splash plays or scoring TDs doesn't mean they're not any good. I'd say getting Herbig, Payton Wilson, Jack Sawyer and Darnell Washington in the middle rounds has been very good.
Greg M.
10:03
How come the Steelers never use Washington to run the ball in goal line situations?
Gerry Dulac
10:03
That would be interesting. Maybe his initial burst isn't good enough

Gerry. I think it was a good try to try to piece together a team to have a shot at it all, a great story if it ended in playoff success.  So far no such luck.  They are still in it and I believe they go into Baltimore and win.  Do you feel this is a time to blow up this roster, trade away all the high priced vets (if you can)?  They may not be just a quarterback away, but they really need a young gun slinger, just to make it fun to watch again.  Enjoy your work.
Gerry Dulac
10:06
Now there's some optimism for the other guy. They never blow it up, nor do I think they should, but I would not be opposed to trading away one of your highest-priced guys after the season and hoping you get a No. 1 pick in return. Trust me, it is not far-fetched (wink, wink). Problem is, sometimes the value depreciates as you go.

Hi Gerry, Ray wrote.an astute observation that we may have reached the tipping point with fans.  Even the national media, which, for so long, has doggedly supported Tomlin, seems to now be turning.  Steven A. Smith asked the question to his college hosts:  what would we be saying if any other coach had not won a playoff game in 16 years?"  True.  My question is do you think that Steeler mgmt is drinking the kool Aid in thinking that this next draft they move all their chips in the middle and get the QB, THEN Tomlin will really show you what he can do?  Time and again, coordinators change, coaches leave and still the same results.
Gerry Dulac
10:09
Brian, who is this Ray guy (hey that's funny)?? I don't think management thinks that at all. Look, they're not blind, deaf or stupid. They see what's happening. And what really gets their attention is empty seats, opposing fans invading the stadium and discontent from the fans who are there. They'd be drinking something if they didn't see or know that.

Gerry, thanks for the chats and your spot on insights, regardless of the comments I expect from the peanut gallery. I think this season has finally shown what I consider the main issue. A team with a few great players , some good players and significant holes.  (Esp QB, since Bens elbow)- and a coach with a generally high floor. No more spackle the last two years.   Scheme and players help us look good early , then we fade as the year progresses. I THINK the last two drafts show a good long term strategy - do you think Khan and Weidl are the answer and survive any offseason changes?
Gerry Dulac
10:12
The last thing I ever do is worry about the peanut gallery. Actually, I enjoy their comments because it gives me an opportunity to show how ridiculous some of their suggestions/questions are. But that's why I'm here. As for your question, I have no problem with what Khan/Weidl do. Understand, they are making moves and bringing in players that Mike Tomlin and his coordinators ask for. Never forget that.

Thanks for the chats Gerry! There's a realistic chance the Raven, Steelers and Bengals all finish 8-9 and the Bengals win the Division.  Imagine the story lines Gerry!
Gerry Dulac
10:13
That was the other problem with losing to the Bills. It brought the Bengals back into the race. Don't forget, there were 4-8 last year too at this point and won their final five games.

How is it that an offense coached by Mr Tight End  has zero targets to its highest paid TE? Not that I think Freiermuth is great but as long they gave him a new contract they may as well use him.
Gerry Dulac
10:15
I don't and never will understand it. The Steelers have two viable receiving targets among all the others -- Metcalf and Freiermuth. You want to sprinkle in the other guys, that's fine. But they are your guns, and when you have a gun you shoot it. This idea of rotating guys to fit packages probably needs to stop

Good morning, Mr. Dulac. I keep hearing and reading fans and media say that this is rock bottom for the Steelers. I beg to differ. You know what would be closer to rock bottom? If Cleveland beats Pittsburgh in Cleveland and Myles Garrett sets the sack record in the same game. Add a little extra insult if the loss knocks Pittsburgh out of the playoffs. I wouldn't want to show up to this chat the next week.
Gerry Dulac
10:15
They have no idea what rock bottom is. There are 5 more games. Let's see what happens

10:15
Mr. D, what is your best guess for the terrible play the past 7 games , is it 50/50 players/coaching inefficiency or ineffectiveness or would you say more 75% coaching 25% players? Thanks!
Gerry Dulac
10:17
I'd say it's more on the players, whether that means they're not executing, don't know what they're doing or just aren't talented enough.

Dear Gerry . Thank you as always for the chat . I know everyone is quick to drive Tomlin out of town but if he goes away , then Omar Khan should be fired first . How do you defend getting Metcalf for a second round pick and then getting only 3rd round pick for Pickens . I literally cannot watch cowboys game anymore thinking what could have been . They have put up with intolerable receivers before but then gave away Pickens for Pennies . He signed Slay for 10 million dollar and he could not finish the season . He is in love with old washed up guys who are past their primes . How is khan not getting blame for this mess ? Why are fans not chanting his name for firing ? I hate to think that he and not Weidl will pick our next QB . Thank you .
Gerry Dulac
10:19
See earlier answer about who wants the players they bring in. I hear ya, though. Slay was a bad move, especially at that ridiculous price, but again, they were only doing what the coaches wanted.

Many time, including twice this year, teams have played the Steelers with Decimated Offensive Lines.  Why can't our Defense exploit that?  And on the flip side, Why can't our O-Line can't seem to open a hole or keep our QB upright long enough for a pass over the middle?
Gerry Dulac

If we go 8-9 who will be the first national media clown to the great Mike Tomlin has only had one losing season, Last chance of the year to visit the Rockville PGA superstore. New attraction demo bay for home simulator and launch monitors,

Hi Gerry - based on some of the comments from players, do you think Tomlin has lost the team (or is in the process of doing so)? It seems like the same issues have hung over this team the whole season thus far.
Gerry Dulac
10:21
He has not lost the team, trust me. But there is no question the same issues exists every year. And, so, my question always is, how long do they continue to tolerate the same old thing?
KN Phoenix

Hello . Thank you as always for the chat . Do you know if Rodgers is allowed by Arthur Smith to call plays in the huddle or change the plays ? At this point , I would think he should be allowed  to do it with all his credentials.  Thank you
Gerry Dulac
10:22
Yes, he is. A lot of plays have checks and run/pass options in them and Rodgers can (and does) change them, usually at the line of scrimmage

Is it me or are the Ravens as mediocre as the Steelers?  This “run” they’re on since Lamar’s return are wins vs Miami, Vikings, Browns, and Jets and a loss to the Bengals.
Gerry Dulac
10:22
At least they got on a run. You could say that about the Steelers early run, too
