Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 12.24.25

Happy Gilmore

Gerry, typically when a team wins a playoff game for the first time in a while it is seen as a stepping stone. With this squad it feels more like the ultimate goal. If Rodgers does not return next year they are starting from scratch. Does this chase for a wildcard win feel hollow to you?
Gerry Dulac
10:34
They had to do something to get back on some kind of track. So let's see if what they did pays off

Hello Gerry, I always appreciate your work.  Do you notice that Rodgers' willingness to use the middle of the field a bit more is corresponding to the team generating more TOP and points in recent games?  Is this an Arthur Smith scheme change, or Rodgers finding his mojo?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
It's not like Arthur Smith or Rodgers are deliberately staying away from the middle of the field. Maybe it's because of the way teams are defending the Steelers. Maybe it's because some of their receivers weren't doing a good enough job to get free in the middle of the field. But, as you can see, they can -- and do -- do it.

We’ve seen some really good blocks from Pat Freiermuth recently. Is he noticeably improving or has he always had a “some” good ones and it’s an issue if consistency?
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Absolutely. And good on you to notice

I’m sorry but isn’t it a conflict of interest that DKs appeals officer was a former Browns coach?  Come on. Get someone else.
Gerry Dulac
10:38
I knew that would be the prevailing thought, which is why I tweeted Palmer was the hearing official.

With DK suspended why won't they even consider signing Lazard?  I'm sure he could be more productive than Roman Wilson who has been a healthy scratch.
Gerry Dulac
10:38
They're not and I doubt he would

Piggybacking on your earlier comment. While I don't think Aaron is single handedly running the offense, I do believe that he has met with the offense and discussed what's best for them and can be accomplished on the field and then he is passing that along to Smith. The offense has a different vibe to it and it's obvious after the Bills game. They have a REAL pulse now.
Gerry Dulac
10:39
He meets with the offense ALL the time, since training camp. That is nothing new.

Hi Gerry! Merry Christmas! Even with Metcalf out, I have a hard time seeing Sanders beating the Steelers this Sunday. I hope the Pack wins and makes it meaningless, but the Steelers clinch on Sunday. Do you lean that way?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Yes I do. Losing DK certainly doesn't help, but with the way Arthur Smith uses all his personnel, including his TEs, it's not going to be crippling.

Is Gainwell the Steelers MVP this year? Maybe Rodgers? Any other candidates?
Gerry Dulac
10:40
To me, the three leading candidates are 1) Rodgers, 2) Ramsey and 3) Gainwell
Rob in Texas
10:41
One other question, might they line up Gainwell as a slot receiver to help deal with DK's absence or his he too slow or not able to fill this position?
Gerry Dulac
10:41
They will continue to line him the way they always do. They are not going to change their offense because one of their WRs is out

The defense has been better without Watt's plodding presence. Coincidence?
Gerry Dulac

Is the Steeler's bar set so low that winning one playoff game is like what winning a Super Bowl used to be?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
No, but it's better than what has happened the previous eight years

10:42
What is the reason for Payton Wilson snaps decreasing?  Has Tomlin lost faith in him?
Gerry Dulac
10:42
Not at all. They have been more focused on stopping the run, so that has meant more of Harrison and Holcomb and more 3-4 front
The Dude
10:42
Metcalf certainly in the wrong, but will there be any scrutiny over how the situation was handled by security? Someone had to be held accountable for that too.

Will Tomlin keep getting his contract extended until long after I am dead and gone?
Gerry Dulac
10:43
Not sure how old you are

10:43
Gerry, I hope you are well, and Merry Christmas from the Bay Area of California. Not sure how much you interacted with him, but any good memories/stories of Franco Harris as we celebrate The Immaculate Reception this week?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
Franco was before my professional time, but my meetings with him, while few, were always very nice. Hearing about him from other teammates and team personnel were exactly like he was portrayed

10:44
Do Steelers still make a big play for QB despite the class being less impressive than anticipated?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
No

10:44
What position do you expect Steelers' to target this draft?
Gerry Dulac
10:44
QB
The Dude
10:45
I am not a Rodgers fan but have to admit it is fun to watch his reaction after some boneheaded stuff from Steeler players and coaches. I would think an old curmudgeon like you might enjoy it too?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
Hey......
Ryan
10:45
You know, DK is the victim.  What will happen to the blue fan who called him a racial slur and stalked him?
Gerry Dulac
10:45
Regardless of what he said, two incidents in two years with the same player -- stalking?? -- should be cause to prevent him from coming to the stadium again
Desperate in Seattle
10:45
Who blew the damn whistle and when did he blow it? Those players ALL thought the whistle had been blown. On the other hand, I surmise that the Steeler's whistle-gate was not as controversial. Everyone knows they SHOULD have blown the whistle but didn't.
Gerry Dulac
10:46
It doesn't matter if there was a whistle or not. There was a OPI penalty and that negates everything that happened.
