OK kids, we're going to start our chat so fire away with your questions.

Is there 1 thing that you’d say led the Steelers to be in the situation they’re in? (the Oakland loss, Bell distraction, etc)
Gerry Dulac
11:01
Inability to come up with late-game defensive stops. Think about it: If the Steelers get just one stop -- ONE!! -- against Denver, Oakland, Chargers and New Orleans they win those games. But, it doesn't even need to come down to that. If they get just one stop -- ONE!! -- in any one of those games, they win the division. Just one stop in any of the 4 games. That's all it took. And it didn't happen.

What is current roster status of Mason Rudolph? Do you see him with a much larger role next year and unseating Dobbs?
Gerry Dulac
11:01
yes. that is the plan

Very frustrated, but have no question.  Happy New Year and thanks for keeping us informed.

You are not alone. Thanx for joining the chat.

I love MT and not advocating a change for a guy with no losing seasons in 12. But if you thought you'd lose Munchak to a HC job, and you could  "trade" MT for a lot of picks ala Gruden and elevate MM, would you do that?
Gerry Dulac
11:03
I never thought of that, to be honest. Probably not
Chas
11:03
Firing Tomlin has it risks, just look at the Giants since firing Coughlin, but Tomlin's poor team prep against weaker opponents and his poor handling of game situations does warrant a change and a risk worth taking.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
That's a pretty big risk. But the Tampa Bay Bucs did that with Tony Dungy. Even though he was always getting them to the postseason, Dungy was fired because he could never get them past the playoffs and into the Super Bowl.

Would you be more supportive of defensive coaching changes with adding a few new pieces or keeping the coaches for consistency but still adding a few new pieces? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:06
They have one big problem and it's not coaching. They need better players at inside linebacker, players with speed who can cover more ground, especially against the pass. Don't get me wrong, they also need another cornerback, but their biggest weakness is in the middle of the field, not the coaching.

when will some from PG media step up and ask Tomlin a challenging question? How long does he get a pass for? Does the PG media really not know enough about football to realize he IS the Steelers biggest problem?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
I'll tell everyone in the media room.

As someone who only ocassionaly visits the Pittsburgh area, but is a dedicated and loyal fan (we journey to training camp every year for instance) do the Steelers have more than their share of distractions and drama?
Gerry Dulac
11:10
If they do (and they probably do), it's for two reasons: One, they are a popular winning team that gets a lot of national attention for that reason, so their issues are magnified more so than most if not all teams (with the exception of NE). Two, they have a lot of big-name players on the team and it just so happens that several of them -- Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell -- cause a lot of the distraction.

NFLcoaches will eventually figure out Baltimore’s unorthodox offense but maybe not in time to help the Steelers. How does Cleveland matchup with them?
Gerry Dulac
11:11
Actually, Cleveland matches up very well with them. They have an aggressive defense that can move.

Who was responsible on the 3rd and 20 conversion? Happy New Year
Gerry Dulac
11:11
I'm still not sure if it was Mike Hilton, who looked out of position, or Sean Davis, who typically has the middle of the field. But it was a huge gaffe

Gerry, If it’s safe to say Munchak is the top offensive assistant, who in your opinion is the Steelers top defensive assistant? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:14
I'm assuming you mean "top" in terms of who you think is the best assistant coach? I will not argue your point about Munchak. But it's not always fair to evaluate coaches in that regard because some coaches have better personnel at their position than others.

As we all know this has been a frustrating season and perhaps another opportunity lost with seemingly good talent in place. Will “lessons learned” be applied so whatever the outcome we perform better next year?
Gerry Dulac
11:14
You think they would have learned their lesson after last year. How did that work out??
Nick
11:14
Jerry, love your chats. Many things went adversly for steelers in 2018. Bell pulled the plug on them. Conner got  hurt at the critical time. Defense never showed up. But because of Ben and good receivers they showed a lot of mettle. Shouldn't the steeler nation be proud of them?
Gerry Dulac
11:15
I get your point, but, right now, after losing four of their past five games, all in the final seconds, I don't think too many people are feeling pride.

Gerry, If your taking off season questions..Does Fitzgerald give a home town discount for a role and chance to win a ring? Thanks
Gerry Dulac
11:17
I don't know about that ....maybe if you offer him membership at Oakmont CC. I will tell you this, every athlete should be like Larry Fitzgerald. They don't come any better.

Looking back on the season, perhaps Ben was correct when he said the Steelers should have drafted help for this year rather than a third string QB.
Gerry Dulac
11:18
We don't need Ben to tell us that, but, yes, he was correct. I am still dumbfounded they didn't even DRAFT an inside LB, not on any round. And their answer to the biggest weakness on the team was signing Jon Bostic. Just incredibly bad planning for the one area that was costing you advancement into and through the postseason.

We know that Gilbert and Foster are gone for next year.  What are your feelings about the replacements and the expected performance of the OL next year?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
How do you know that??
Huck
11:19
Give Tomlin's poor judgement on throwing out the challenge flag,do you foresee the Steelers assigning the call to another coach?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
No, he's the boss
Dave
11:19
The Steelers won only 5 playoff games in 8 years.  This coach seems to always make bad gut decisions. If this continues, the Steelers brand will diminish. When will the Rooney’s make a chance?
Gerry Dulac
11:20
Well, as we have seen since 1969, that is not in their nature.
Jason
11:20
If Butler and some others are not let go, then Tomlin needs to find work else where.  That D has cost us big time this year. Do you thing changes will be made?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac
11:20
I will remind once again that it's not just Keith Butler who is making the defensive calls and decisions. It's the guy above him as well.
Evan
11:22
I know it’s not the Rooney way to fire coaches, but do you see any changes coming? This roster has too much talent to miss the playoffs. Someone needs to be accountable for this
