Not every QB is Ben Roethlisberger

Gerry I adore you and love your candor in these chats. Is there anything Mason Rudolph could do starting in Seattle on Sunday to convince the Steelers that they should bring him back as their starting QB in 2024?
Gerry Dulac
10:30
I think he has already done that with how he played vs. Cincy. If nothing else, he started the wheels turning
CJ

Gerry, good morning thanks for the chat, this has been a frustrating year for the Steelers but last week does make me more optimistic for the future . I think last week proves that if this team has good quarterback play it can be a very solid team with a lot of the pieces already in place , we would still like to see improvement at center, middle linebacker and another cornerback to pair with porter and of course where will they find the quarterback they need not to mention the coaching upgrades hopefully that occur in off season .. you deserve a pay the man for all your good work over the years
Gerry Dulac
10:31
Thanx man. And you left out all the injuries on defense. They need a big-time DL and a young ILB. That would help get them a little closer.

Gerry-   What one Mitch attribute did the coaching staff place too much weight on that lead to this past year’s resigning and #1 back-up status?   His mobility or pedigree or something else?  Based on Canada’s offensive schemes was QB mobility over/valued?
Gerry Dulac
10:32
Both. I did not have a problem when they signed Trubisky. They felt he would be an experienced, athletic backup till whatever rookie QB they drafted would be ready to play

Hi Gerry. Really interested in your opinion on this. Kenny Pickett didn’t not sound like a quarterback who is handling the coaches decision to play Rudolph well. Do you think he’s taking it as a slight? As an indication maybe Tomlin and the team don’t look at me as a franchise quarterback. I’m ready to play but they think someone else is better. That kind of thing.
Gerry Dulac
10:33
I don't think so. I'm sure he might be disappointed he's not going to play, but oh well. But I also think he knows he is their QB in 2024, no matter what Rudolph does. Unless he wins the Super Bowl.

Gerry , I’m sure you’ve noticed over the years of watching football that defensive backs don’t get their heads turned around and look for the football like a receiver particularly on deep sideline routes or goal line fades , why don’t so many DB’s do this si they can make a play on the football rather than get called for a Pass interference or just don’t know where ball is and receivers are able to make the catch
Gerry Dulac
10:34
Agreed. I think the CB play around the league is sorely lacking. They grab and hold more than a hockey game. It's league-wide

Matt Canada didn't want Mason and Tomlin buckled to his fantasy OC pick. Mason backed up HOF Ben for 4 years with Tomlins blessing , beating out other QB along the way. Mason is the better QB out of the three, hands down.

10:34
OK then

10:35
Are you aware of any efforts by the Tomlin camp to have media pundits sell other teams’ interest in his services - by trade or otherwise - as a negotiating ploy going into an offseason when he would be due an extension?
Gerry Dulac
10:35
Nope.
RJT

Kenny played well against Cincy and was off to a good start against AZ before the injury. With that said even if he’s healthy would you stick with Mason?  I thought he looked very comfortable, it was their best QB play in a couple years, and he seemed to go through his reads better than Pickett and Mitch.
Gerry Dulac
10:35
You answered your own question

10:35
Gerry,I think Tomlin is indeed one of the top five HC’s in the NFL, but the quality of his coaching staff seems to be a weak point.  Do you think Omar Kahn and staff get more involved with the replacement / selection process of the coaching staff in the off season?
Gerry Dulac
10:36
Tomlin picks his own staff, not the GM. Of course, the team owner always has some say, if not a lot.

Can you name one position group that the Steelers have more talent than the Ravens? I say RB and LB is a wash. The talent discrepancy is eye opening.
Gerry Dulac
10:37
Not RB if you consider the Ravens lost JK Dobbins and Keaton Mitchell to season-ending injuries. And only OLB, not ILB, which is the strength of that Ravens defense.

10:37
why is Hines being denied the hof?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
Too many receivers in front of him, is probably the main reason. And probably because some voters point up he never led the league is  receptions or receiving yards, which was some of the same anti-Bettis sentiment

Hi Gerry, MT was at his best with excellent coordinators such as Lebeau & Arians but has gotten away from hiring proven guys like this. Is it an ego issue with MT?
Gerry Dulac
10:38
They were Cowher's guys. And that made a huge difference
Ronald Jeremy
10:39
Jay Glazer continues to bring up trade possibilities for Tomlin. Am I right to assume that because of the Glazer/Tomlin friendship, that he’s peddling what Mike tells him? That Tomlin is pondering an exit strategy and fresh start in another locale?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
Who knows...
Marc from Germany
10:39
Hi Gerry! The talk about attitude and effort abruptly died down after the Cincy game and the results produced therein. Does that mean, it was moot to begin with or does the criticism stay valid?
Gerry Dulac
10:39
Let's see what happens this week. It was one game
Yancy
10:39
Is the next OC hire the most critical hire of Tomlin’s tenure? Feels like it’s their last chance to turn Pickett around, or they could be in QB purgatory for years to come.
Gerry Dulac
10:40
Agreed. Just as I thought to bring Canada back in 2023 was the biggest issue facing the team

Happy holidays Gerry and thanks for all your work throughout the year!  I agree with you 100% we need a stud DE to replace cam.  This is a must and glad we have Weidl. I believe he shares the same philosophy of building inside out.  We also need a QB and cannot waste Minkah and TJ’s best years.  Do we have the cap room to bring in Cousins/Fields and love your thoughts on this.  Last, any sleepers for my 2024 fantasy golf draft coming up?  👍. Cheers!
Gerry Dulac
10:42
I'll have to give that sleeper thing some thought. I will say this about Fields -- they LOVED him when he was coming out! But I don't think they will be in the market for a starting QB because they think they have one already. They are not giving up on him just yet. And I don't think those guys you mentioned are interested in being a backup of course
OK kids, that's all the time we have today. Happy New Year and we'll do it again next week, back at our regular time
