Hi Gerry - do you have any insight into why the Steelers did not select an ILB somewhere in the draft? The depth at ILB looks very concerning
Gerry Dulac
10:52
I do not, other than to say they didn't have any with a decent enough grade at the appropriate draft position. And they certainly weren't going to reach.
JerseySteel

Hi Gerry - what is the word you are hearing on how good Cameron Sutton can be? Slot corner? Starter? Potential Pro-bowler?
Gerry Dulac
10:54
Well, I'm not going to get ahead of myself on any player and predict a Pro Bowl, especially a third-round draft choice. But the more I looked intro this guy the more I liked him as a third-round pick. Seems part of the reason he slipped in because of a broken leg his senior year. But, even at that, while most people thought he was done for the season, he battled through and returned for the last couple games. Tough kid.

The 5th round CB selection - Brian Allen - has similar comments - long, fast, and raw that Ike Taylor drew when selected in the 4th round. Do you see any other similarities between the two?
Gerry Dulac
10:55
On potential, this kid might have a bigger upside. But, while fast, he might not be as fast as Ike. He sound a little like Cortez Allen, a long corner who needs another year to develop. Let's hope he pans out better for the long haul.

with no te taken in draft...any interest in recent released Gary Barnidge?
Gerry Dulac
10:58
They were going to take one in the fourth round -- Michael Roberts of Toledo -- but someone snatched him ahead of their turn. Barnidge might be a possibility later but the Steelers seem intent on waiting out this Ladarius Green situation.

Hi Gerry. Do you think there is any chance that the Steelers end up trading one of their receivers, maybe Sammie Coates for a draft pick? That's a crowded room and I think they keep DHB because of special teams. Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
It night be possible later in training camp but not now.

Does William gay make this team?
Gerry Dulac
10:59
He might make the team but don't think he will contribute unless there is an injury.

Are any of the DB being groomed to play free safety? Mitchell no longer can go sideline to sideline and play the over coverage necessary to support CB's playing on the edge. You cant play man under unless you have over help -is this technique or personell limitation?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
I think this was the idea when they were looking at Jabrill Peppers and Obi Melifonwu in the draft

With James Conner in the RB stable, do you think that he will see more goalline touches than LeVeon?
Gerry Dulac
11:00
No

Hi Gerry! They've been burned recently on trades (Shamarko, Boykin, kickers), but by not making any deals, is it fair to say the Steelers didn't maximize the value of their picks?
Gerry Dulac
11:01
They only had one more than usual, so it's not like they had a boatload. Plus, with that extra pick in the third, they took James Conner. I think that is taking good use of your extra pick

Any chance Whaley comes back into the fold after his ouster in Buffalo?
Gerry Dulac
11:02
Never say never with a Pittsburgh-born person

Who did you particularly like in this draft? Can be favorite, best value, or whatever criteria you would like to use.
Gerry Dulac
11:03
I like the first two picks a lot -- Watt and Schuster. And I like the CBs. I think Sutton can surprise people and Allen is a good pickup on rd. 5.

What kind of reception do you think Matavis gets from his teammates for bonehead tweet? Thanks.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Those are the least of his bonehead moves.

Has Villaneuva signed his Restricted contract? and is there a long term deal being worked out?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
He hasn't and I think that's the plan. But they aklso have a fourth-round pick from last year, Jerald Hawkins, who looks very good.
Taz

The faces the Steelers organization presents (coach Tomlin, Colbert, position coaches) to discuss draft choices are universally laudatory - with the occasional welcome breath of truth from Keith Butler. In the background, were the scouts really happy or annoyed at any particular selection this year?
Gerry Dulac
11:05
I don't know that answer, either way.
Dan
11:05
Are the Steelers ever going to figure out that they have to go man on defense to take on the Patriots? Does Tomlin really want to move to the Tampa Two?
Gerry Dulac
11:06
Uh, they already moved to the version of Tampa 2 two years ago. They want to be able to play more man now.
Zack
11:06
I'm not sure Sutton is a starting cb, maybe he is, but prob more of a nickel back. Why didn't the Steelers trade up in rd 2 for a starting cb, or rd 3 for Fabian Moreau? Getting JuJu in 2 and Moreau in 3 would have been amazing.
Gerry Dulac
11:08
Right. They are looking at him as a possible nickel back this year, but he is solid in man coverage, which is why they drafted him. As for Moreau, I liked him a lot and so did they. But he had a medical issue, beyond his torn pec, that concerned them for the long-term. So they passed.

A post-draft hypothetical: Which pair would have been more promising, Kevin King and Derek Rivers or TJ Watt and Cameron Sutton?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
It's not even close...
Taz
11:08
Is Watt the most athletic player the Steelers have had since Brett Keisel?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
With all due respect to Keisel, they have had more athletic players than he.

Gerry. Do you know first hand if Ladarius is cleared for football? No TE in draft would seem to say yes.
Gerry Dulac
11:09
It would seem to indicate that the immediate prognosis/report is not bad, right??

Gerry, I love what the steelers addressed during this draft. If they stay relatively healthy, is a 10+ win season again on the horizon, you think?
