Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 2.28.18

OK, kids, let's get our chat started. I'm at the NFL combine and it's a busy day....

Any chance Steelers take an OLB in the first two rounds?
Gerry Dulac
12:51
I doubt it. Unless they think he can transition to inside LB
Leaper
12:51
Were Hargrave and Tuitt hurt at the end of the season?
Gerry Dulac
12:51
Yes. Tuitt had elbow hyperextension; Hargrave bad back

Gerry,  I am a die hard steeler fan who thinks our fan base has become spoiled over the years.  While we would like to win the superbowl every year, it is both unrealistic and unreasonable.  Our organization and coaching staff do a good job year in and year out.  I have learned over the years to just enjoy the journey each year!
Gerry Dulac
12:52
You are absolutely 100 percent correct
Leaper
12:52
Does your gut tell you Bell gets signed or not?
Gerry Dulac
12:52
It's up to Bell, just like last year, but I think he gets signed. He's stupid if he does not
Leaper
12:53
If the Steelers franchise Bell and the still can't come to a long term agreement for you think they'd rescind it or would it be too late since the draft would have passed?
Gerry Dulac
12:53
They can rescind at any time.

I know the priority is to sign Bell to a long-term deal. But, if the team reaches the tag deadline, and Bell wants to play his "I'll retire" game...

Would they consider trading him like the Dolphins are trying to do with Jarvis Landry? There's a lot of teams at the top of round 2 with a need at RB and a TON of cap space (Cleveland, Tampa, Indy). I want Bell around, but having 2 picks in the top 40 wouldn't be a bad consolation.
Gerry Dulac
12:54
I agree. I think it's a mistake to sign him to a long-term deal, but a franchise tag will cause a huge cap hit this year, more than if he signed a deal

Who do you like more, Rashaan Evans or Leighton Vander Esch?
Gerry Dulac
12:54
From what I've seen, Vander Esch
Gene
12:55
Hi Gerry,  what are you the most interested in seeing at the combine this year?
Gerry Dulac
12:55
The same as every year -- the inside of St. Elmo's.
12:56
Actually, it's the first-round crop of quarterbacks who are available
Dj Cain
12:56
Gerry honestly do you see Bell playing for th Steelers in 2018!
Gerry Dulac
12:56
I guess I do

Gerry, Thanks for these chats.  If Ryan Shazier can't play in 2018, how will his salary count against the team's cap space?  Do they get any relief from that for someone put on IR?
Gerry Dulac
1:00
He is not playing and his cap hit will be the same as any player who is put on IR. There is no special category for a player with an injury such as Shazier, which is potentially career threatening

Thanks Gerry, with the need on defense, especially ILB and both Safety positions. Who do you like as the top guys?
Gerry Dulac
1:01
Well, there's a difference between the guys I like and the guys who will be available. Smith from Georgia and Edmunds from Va Tech will be gone when the Steelers pick at 28. That will leave them Vander Esch and two guys who I like -- Jerome Baker of Ohio State, who has Shazier-like speed; and Darius Leonard of So Carolina State. I think the combine is big for those guys

Jonathan Stewart released by Panthers..wouldn't he be a cheap perfect fit to replace Bell?
Gerry Dulac

Too old and beat up

Ben has always talked about wanting to run more no huddle. Do you think Fichtner will be in favor of using no huddle more than the occasional change up that it has been?
Gerry Dulac
1:01
I do.

Heard a perspective that the compensatory pick the Steelers could receive after 2018 if Martavis Bryant departs is about the same as what teams would be offering right now.  Why would the Steelers look to trade him with Eli limping and other unproven's on the roster?   Is he a distraction?  Thinking we should keep MB around thru 2018 and let him prove his worth to others...
Gerry Dulac
1:02
They are not looking to trade him. Never were, Colbert said today

Based on his record, Coach Tomlin is currently one of the best coaches in the NFL.  However  he seems to lack "situational football" coaching skills.  This is magnified in big games and post season.  I feel specific coaching decisions lost the playoff game to Jacksonville.  The score would have been much worse if it were not for two miraculous 4th down throws by Ben.  I am thankful the Rooney's are patient with coaches, but when does Coach Tomlin become accountable.  This is the most talented Steelers team I have seen in a long time, but the window is closing.
Gerry Dulac

I would like someone to point to just one "situational football" coaching gaffe Tomlin made that cost them a game. Just one.

I think the BEST move the team made this off season was....KEEPING MUNCHAK... we need to pay him more...lock him down long term...he has made our O line into a great Unit...he plugs and plays guys when he needs to...AGREE or DISAGREE ???
Gerry Dulac
1:03
They did pay him more to keep him

Mr Colbert confirmed that Shazier will not play in 2018. How does his status effect the salary cap?
Gerry Dulac
1:03
It doesn't

jerry any chance they cut foster and  play finney to save some money for a decent safety?
Gerry Dulac
1:04
I guess there's a chance. When Finney has played, there is little drop in performance. In fact, in the past 2 years, the team's three best rushing performances in the regular season are when Finney was at LG

Have there been any talks of trading Martavis Bryant at the Combine yet? Rumor is the Packers might be interested in him.
Gerry Dulac

Are you reading this chat? Or  my tweets? The Steelers are not trying to trade Bryant. Never were. Colbert made that perfectly clear today
