Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 9.5.18

OK, kids, we're going to start our chat in just a few minutes. I invited Le'Veon Bell to join in but he's a no-show.
10:57
OK, let's get our chat started. Go...!!
Larry the cable guy
10:57
I guess Bell wants the tag pulled .  Your take Gerry
Gerry Dulac
10:58
No, he probably doesn't, but I would applaud the Steelers from now until the NFL disbanded if they rescinded the tag.

Gerry,  I realize it's business with Bell but acting so selfish to his teammates is not business.  Just say when you are reporting and do what you have to do.  What say you?  Thank you.
Gerry Dulac

It was always about the money with Le'Veon Bell, right? Never one did he insult us and say it was a matter of principle. It was always about the money. So, if he doesn't  show up and forgoes $853,000 a game, what does that say? I'm not sure. It's not like he can negotiate for more money. He's already getting more in 2018 than any back in the league, by far. If he's proving a point, I'm not sure what that point is. But, please, don't tell everyone you're here to help the team win games and win the Super Bowl, because that would be terribly insulting to anyone who has half a brain to think. Selfish? Absolutely

Any new linebackers show up for the chat? I think we could use some more.
Gerry Dulac
11:03
Not yet

Hi Gerry...given Coach Tomlin's affection for fleet of foot QB's (Dixon-Vick-Leftwich)...why didn't anyone see this Josh Hobbs move a distinct possibility?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
I would not put Leftwich in that category. I think we all saw it as a distinct possibility. We just didn't think it would happen.
Ron
11:04
With the Bell situation, who will back up Conner?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Ridley and Samuels, depending on down and distance
Jack
11:04
Gerry,  I really think Bell does not want to play the first or maybe more games to show how valuable he is if things go poorly.
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Who knows.
Mark
11:04
Gerry, I already thought highly of Kevin Colbert but that Martavis Bryant trade ascends him to genius level.  Perfect timing.  Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
11:04
Bingo

Hi Gerry and thanks for your insight.  So whats your thoughts on the Steelers freeing up cape space with Heywards's re structure? Should we expect a notable signing or a trade in the coming days? Thank you sir.
Gerry Dulac
11:06
It frees up cap room for that possibility, for sure. Doesn't mean it will happen. I think that is the only contract you will see restructured, although never say never.
Doug
11:06
Chances Steelers choose not to pay Bell for the first few games?
Gerry Dulac
11:07
I know what I would do, but I think they will take the high road and exhibit more honor than Bell is capable of and pay him
Krugerrand
11:08
Is there any reason to assume Bell won't make a "business decision" at playoff time and decide to not show up for those games?  If he makes it through the regular season games unhurt, why risk injury and his big money contract in games where he's not getting paid?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
Once he's here to play, he will play.

Bell's leverage with the Steelers goes up or down depending on how well Conner does as the #1 active running back for the team. Think Bell is deliberately waiting to see what happens against Cleveland before making his next move?
Gerry Dulac
11:08
He has no leverage. He either plays for $14.5 million or he doesn't
Ola
11:08
Big fan of your chats Gerry!  Do you think the Steelers are trying to pick up an extra OLB in free agency and any thoughts on who it might be?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
I wouldn't rule it out, though I think the same can also be said for inside LB.
Tony
11:09
Unfortunately this chat will mostly be about #26 but In your opinion what does this kid truly think he's getting out of his this senseless holdout?
Gerry Dulac
11:09
You'd have to ask him. But anything he says smack of selfishness
Doug
11:10
Any insight into Bells reasoning on not showing up?  I get he's upset he didn't get paid but at this point he isn't helping himself or the Steelers and there is literally nothing that can be done to help him.  He is only increasing the chances of getting hurt or getting his game checks taken away by the Steelers.
Gerry Dulac
11:11
That is correct. I do not reason ridiculously and try not to do so selfishly, so I cannot possibly provide insight to the thinking of a delusional athlete
Philippe
11:11
It's one thing to hold out and let the team know you're holding out for x reason, but what Bell is doing makes no sense... Why would you not make the team aware of your true intentions - why would you keep them in the dark? What is the purpose of all this? I hope the Steelers do not play or pay him while they have a roster exemption.
Gerry Dulac
11:12
You are not alone. Players like that, who already have two suspensions and are randomly drug-tested for the rest of their career, are not worth the trouble. Do you really think the Steelers are any less of a playoff team without a running back whose longest run last year was 27 yards and averaged 3.9 yards per carry???
Ryno
11:12
Could you clear up the specifics with Bell?  I have read the Steelers have already acquired a two-week waiver for him, and I've also heard they are going to acquire one. Which is it? Also, I have read they have the option to not pay him, and I've also seen that that has to be negotiated with his agent before he signs the tag?
Gerry Dulac
11:13
They cannot use a roster exemption until he signs his franchise tag, which, of course, he has not. If the Steelers use the roster exemption, it is up to them if they want to pay Bell or not. They are not required to do so.

Why haven't we signed OLB John Simon yet? Great tackler, good backup!! We have 3 OLB!!!
Gerry Dulac
11:17
I don't think you need too many Colts castoffs
Yerfdog
11:18
We’re pretty thin at OLB right now.  They could use some help there but they must really think highly of Ola Adeniyi to use the IR w designation to return option.   Sign a FA or wait on Ola?
Gerry Dulac
11:18
They just might move Keion Adams from the practice squad
MD
11:18
If Bell is willing to forgo $855k a week to save himself for his next contract, what would prevent him from showing up for weeks 11-17, getting an accrued season and then sitting out for the playoffs?  Playoff money is much less than $855k a week.  Would he still owe the team fines for doing that if he moves to another team?
Gerry Dulac
11:19
I don't think the Steelers will go along with that. I don't think it will get to that point.
