Okay, hello, folks. Lots of questions in here already.
4:59
But before we get into it, I guess I owe an apology. I think Susan Slusser is subtweeting me for saying that Linden is in the Bay Area.
Apparently it's not and I don't know what I'm talking about. So, sorry about that.

I feel like I've let Fogerty down.
Anyway, enough time wasting. Let's get to baseball.

With about $90-100 million to spend if they choose to this year and even more money available next year. Couldn't they sign let's say Judge, Turner(shortstop) and Verlander but back load their contracts for years to come?
Darragh McDonald
5:01
Sure, they could. Deferred money also seems to be more and more common in contracts these days.

How's this for a bad- contract for bad- contract change-of-scenery trade:  the Giants' Tommy LaStella to the Diamondbacks for Madison Bumgarner.

The money doesn't quite add up.  Bumgarner is owed about $23M over two years,  LaStella $11.5M and one year.   So throw in some $$$ or a low level prospect.

MadBum is owed 37 mil over the next two years.

Nobody has acknowledged the obvious....The Giants miscalculated the value of Rodon at the deadline....somebody forgot the opt in/out factor severely lowering the value of the best starting option available. Now we will get a non 1st round pick. Not a good calculation

Well, we don't know what kind of offers they had. It's possible that teams weren't willing to give up a ton for that scenario.
5:04
If you trade for him and he's good, he's a rental. If he's bad or gets injured, you're stuck with him for another 22 mil. There's more downside than upside.
Maybe they weren't offered anything better than the QO pick.
Also, I'd have to look up the standings but I recall they were sort of on the verge of still being in it.

Do you believe the Giants willingness to spend big this offseason has more to do with displeasure from the fans or the last of the bad contracts coming off the books with Longoria and possibly Belt gone?
Darragh McDonald
5:06
I think it's a combination. I think they've been sort of biding their time, waiting for the Crawford/Posey/Belt/Longo era to end, keeping the books clear while adding waiver claims and modest deals.
5:07
If they were bad in 2021, they could have done this a year ago. But because they were good, they extended Crawford and gave Belt the QO, keeping the gang together for one last heist.
It didn't work so now it's really time to turn the page.

What are you hearing about the Giants chances of landing Judge since the Yankees made an offer? Do you think they could sign Judge AND one of the top SS?
Darragh McDonald
5:08
Judge has been pretty quiet about his preferences, which is surely smart on his part.
5:09
Some NY media types are saying that they think Judge is coming back because Hal Steinbrenner is speaking so confidently about it. But I don't know how much to read into that.
Other than that, no clue where Judge is leaning.
As for Judge and a shortstop, they certainly could do that. We saw Texas get two of the top free agents last year. But it's not something I would expect.

It’s been pretty quiet so far as far as rumors go and free agent signings go. Are players being offered contracts at this point?
Darragh McDonald
5:10
MLB free agency generally moves slower than the other sports.
5:11
A lot of years, the Winter Meetings really get the ball going. Those start December 4th, so, maybe things will explode then. We'll see.

Would Bellinger make sense for the Giants? I know that his defense in CF is valuable, and he'd be relatively cheap now, but the lack of offense concerns me, and I feel like the OF is already lefty heavy, with Joc/Yaz/Wade. I'd be more open to Haniger, or as much as he'll cost, Judge. Thanks!
Darragh McDonald
5:11
Yeah, Belli's risky. But he's more about the defense, I think. Giants were pretty bad in terms of outfield defense last year.
5:12
Bellinger would certainly help them there and it would be a bonus if his bat rebounded.

Do you think Correa is a good fit for this team? They need to improve in most positions. I don't have a clue what FAs they will have a chance to sign this offseason.
Darragh McDonald
5:12
I think that the Giants will be really interesting because every move they make will have domino effects.
5:13
Signing a shortstop probably means that person is playing second. With so many multi-position guys, do they get traded? Move somewhere else? It will be interesting to see.

In most of the articles I have read...I don't see many or even a few pick the Giants for signing a Big name Free Agent...at 1st it was Aaron Judge and Trea Turner...now ..WHO do you see the Giants signing..a Big Name or 3-4 solid players and 1-2 players signed for One Year...prove themselves?..Like  Cody Bellinger

For our Top 50, I predicted the Giants to get Correa, Bell, Taijuan Walker and Pederson.
Three out of the four of us predicted Correa, actually.

What ever the market-rate is for Rodon - even if the Giants are prepared to go there, I feel like all things being equal, he'd prefer a change of scenery on a clearer contender. Hope I'm wrong about that - do you have any inkling of his preferences?
Darragh McDonald
5:15
I don't have insider info. But I would guess he prioritizes the biggest paycheck.
5:16
He's had so many injury scares in his career and this is probably his biggest chance to make life-changing money.

Wish my fellow Giants fans would stop assuming Judge is coming here. There's no way the Yankees let him go. That being said, any chance we get Turner away from LA? Athleticism/speed has been sorely lacking from this team.
