Hi I was wondering if the Spurs release Marcus Morris could the Sixers sign him to a minimum contract since he's been to two other teams
Luke Adams
2:35
No, the Spurs, Sixers, and Pacers ended up completing the Hield/McDermott trade as a three-way deal, which means Morris went directly from Philadelphia to San Antonio. So he should be prohibited from re-signing with the Sixers if he's cut by San Antonio.
2:37
I say "should" because the rule about a player being able to re-sign with his initial team if he's traded a second team and then waived wasn't initially in the CBA and was only added when the situation arose with - I believe - Andrew Bogut years ago. So if he really wants to bring back Morris, maybe Morey will get on the league about the interpretation of the rule in this case. But I think the fact that the Sixers were willing to complete that trade as a single three-team deal signals that they're OK with not being able to re-sign him.

What amount and years would you guess for Dinwiddie in the off season?  I think if he can help the Lakers in the playoffs it won't matter that he was a buy out guy.
Luke Adams
2:38
Could see maybe a mid-level deal for him, similar to what Schröder got this past summer (two years, $25MM). Will depend how he finishes the season.

Sixers are getting slaughtered on the boards, any big men out there that can help them until Joel returns in April?

Here's our list of current free agents, so you can take your pick of the options there: https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/11/2023-nba-free-agents.html

There are some guys who have decent career résumés (Dewayne Dedmon, Derrick Favors, Meyers Leonard, Nerlens Noel, etc.) but I'm not sure how much they'd help at this point of their careers. Chimezie Metu might be the most intriguing option.
Buyouts
2:40
Do you see any surprise buyout candidates happening? Multiple contenders could use some depth due to injuries in both conferences.
Luke Adams
2:43
Delon Wright would be a fun one, but it's hard to see the Wizards doing that. Maybe Troy Brown in Detroit? These aren't exactly blockbuster names, I know, but maybe someone even more unexpected will decide by March 1 that they're willing to give up a bunch of money to get out of their current situation.
P.J. Tucker or Bones Hyland with the Clippers would be an interesting candidate for that, but I'm not counting on it.

There has to be a home for Andre Drummond where he can start and play 30+ minutes a game, right?
Luke Adams
2:45
I still think his game looks better on the stat sheet than in the film room, but I have to admit he's had a nice year in Chicago. I could see him being a fit as a starter for a team that's spent most of its cap in the backcourt and on the wing and wants to roll with a center in the mid-level range.

What about gallinari. Clips need a 4?
Luke Adams
2:47
I haven't seen him play enough this year to get a good look at his defense post-ACL tear, but I imagine he'd get picked on on that end, so you wouldn't want him playing big/important minutes. As a depth piece though, there are certainly a few teams he'd fit.

Man. How about Deni Avdija? Career bests across the board, and 43/15/3 last night. He looks like a totally different player when he's not being relegated to the seventh or eighth option on offense. What would it take for an interested suitor to pry him away from the Wiz in the offseason?
Luke Adams
2:48
Signing him to that four-year, $55MM extension might've been the best move the Wizards' new front office has made so far. At that price, with the way he's playing this season... I mean, the Wizards' asking price would be at least as high as it is for Kuzma, right?
I think the Wizards will be reluctant to move him.

What would you predict a Mike Conley contract looks like next year? No replacement on roster and no cap space for free agents seems like lock he's brough back.
Luke Adams
2:50
The Timberwolves' point guard situation is an interesting subplot to watch even before July, since Conley, Morris, and McLaughlin are ALL eligible for extensions up until June 30. I imagine Minnesota would like to get at least one of those players under contract before free agency starts, and Conley figures to be the priority barring something unexpected happening in the next few months. He's another guy who could be in that Dennis Schröder range (two years, around the mid-level). Wouldn't surprise me if the Wolves have to go a little above the MLE to ward off rival suitors.

What exactly happened with Dinwiddie with the Nets. He seemed to be doing fine. But they soured on him and sounded like they just wanted him out. Any insight?
Luke Adams
2:51
Yeah, it definitely seemed in the weeks leading up in the deadline like that relationship had run its course. I haven't heard any specifics on why -- that's a situation where the details could leak or Dinwiddie could talk about it as some point down the road.
2:52
Who knows, maybe it's just as simple as Dinwiddie getting frustrated by a team that didn't seem to be going anywhere. They've been pretty subpar since the 2023 trade deadline.

Jordan Goodwin looked good yesterday for the Grizzlies. He's on a 10-day contract but do you think he'll catch on somewhere to finish out the season?
Luke Adams
2:53
I'd be surprised if he doesn't. He's a solid player and there are still a ton of open roster spots around the NBA, including some that NEED to be filled (by rule) within the next week.
Warriors
2:53
Conflicting reports on the warriors. One saying they are chasing a top tier wing and then another saying they want to stay below the cap. I see them clearing salary next year as more likely and trying to get out of the repeaters tax. They would also have more options to building out around curry. What is more likely?
Luke Adams
2:56
The wings being named in yesterday's report (Giannis, KD, etc.) were ones who almost certainly won't be available this summer, so I'd view those as real long shots. I think they're probably best off rolling with Kuminga, letting CP3 go, and re-signing Klay at the best number they can get. Depending on the exact price for Klay, that should put them to actually use some of the mid-level or make trades, since they won't be above the second apron.
Guaranteeing a portion of CP3's expiring salary to trade for, say, a $10-15MM player would also be an option.

I feel like Lebron & Steph are warping the perception of when a player's decline phase happens.  That being said, is the Damian Lillard who has played for the Bucks this year the best they are going to see out of him?  If so, and adding in Khris' & Brook's ages, I fear trading Giannis in another year or two will be the only way to prevent the franchise from falling into a long dark stretch.  Or will PatBev solve everything?
Luke Adams
2:59
I don't think Dame will get BETTER in future seasons, but I wouldn't expect a sharp drop-off either. He's still just 33, two full years younger than Steph, and plays a similar game. Having said that, it's fair to be concerned about Middleton and Lopez going forward. Middleton hasn't really looked the same since dealing with his injury issues and Lopez is at the age where his defensive mobility will probably start declining pretty soon.

Mann and Micic filling up the stat sheet for the Hornets. Are these guys for real?
Luke Adams
3:01
Putting up big numbers on a lottery-bound team with no hope of making the playoffs doesn't necessarily prove they can be rotation players on a winning team, but I do think both guys fell victim to a very deep roster in OKC. Micic is a former EuroLeague MVP last! He's a solid player! And Mann had a really promising rookie season a couple years ago. I think that was a good deal for Charlotte.

Thanks for all the questions today, guys! I'll be back next Thursday to do it again. (Our regular Tuesday chat will be temporarily disrupted while we switch hosts, but should be back within a couple weeks).
Have a great week!
