The hiring of Atkinson probably isn't a factor. Mitchell wants to maximize his earnings, and an extension with Cleveland is the best way to do that. If things don't work out, he can demand a trade in a year or two.

I believe them when they say they want to keep Mitchell, Mobley, Garland and Allen together. Give the new coach at least a year to see if he can make that group work.
