Thanks for all the early questions, guys! Keep 'em coming and we'll get underway in just a second here...

When will the first “big” trade happen? As in a bigger name
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:17
By Thursday at the latest. Wouldn't shock me if something happened today or tomorrow, but we often don't get major action until the free agency negotiating period opens up on the evening of June 30.

Dose Bobby Portis resign with the bucks to a long term deal
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:18
I don't know about long-term, but a two-year, $22MM deal wouldn't surprise me. Maybe the Bucks will do a third year, especially if the per-year number is a little lower.

Is there any way Westbrook still gets moved?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:19
It's not impossible, but the Lakers would have to really sell at a loss at this point and they're definitely not eager to do so.
Cap Space
12:20
How many Teams actually have Salary Cap space ahead of Free Agency starting on Friday?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:21
I'd have to double-check the numbers, but it looks like it'll be about four or five. Pistons, Magic, Pacers, Spurs, Knicks. And a couple of those teams could technically remain over the cap if they don't have any specific use for their room.

As a Spurs fan I'm not happy about the possibility of DJ Murry being traded for picks.  I don't see how getting a 10th or possibly 16th pick player would be better than have DJ remain a Spur. He is coming into his prime and it's crazy to trade him even if we are in a rebuild. We are already stocked with a youth movement and he is the perfect player to lead them. What are your thoughts?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:22
It's a little odd to me too -- he's not a player I really expected to see in trade rumors this summer. But I suppose if you're not a huge believer in him long-term and don't want to have to pay him a max-type deal down the road, moving him with two years left on his contract is the right call. You'd definitely have a better chance to maximize his value at this point than you would in a year or a year-and-a-half.
Pierre 3x's
12:23
Any chance the Warriors and center Javale McGee ( Pierre 3 times ) reunite?  Looney is a Free Agent and only a Fool would rely on James Wiseman staying healthy.
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:23
Never say never, but it sounds like Looney is a pretty good bet to be back, in which case there's probably not a spot for JaVale.

Kyrie Irving to the Heat for Kyle Lowry & Tyler Herro. Who says no?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:24
The Heat. If they're willing to move Herro, they could do better (at least in terms of floor, if not ceiling).

The Knicks found a way to circumvent tampering by hiring Jalen Brunson's dad on the coaching staff. No way that the Knicks make the trades and moves they have in the draft without knowing that he's signing. Do you think the NBA will look to close this loophole in the future? Or do you think we will see more of this (ex: "Hey Mr. Ball, we'd like to hire you to be the head of our marketing department since your son will be a free agent in two months.")?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:27
I'm having trouble envisioning how you'd write that rule. To close the loophole, you'd essentially have to prohibit an NBA player's family member from working for a team, which seems awfully unfair to an NBA lifer like Doc Rivers.

12:28
What is your overall take on what happened with Kyrie?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:29
This was always the outcome that made the most sense. A lot of the stuff about Kyrie signing for $6MM with the Lakers or Durant possibly requesting a trade if Kyrie left seemed designed to put pressure on the Nets, so props to them for not caving.
12:30
By the way, I'm just now realizing that my display name is still publicly showing as "Alex Kirschenbaum," who did our draft-night chat last week. This is Luke Adams hosting the chat, but it seems it's too late to fix the display name issue. Just don't want Alex to be held responsible for any of my bad takes!

Will Oladipo's next contract eclipse the MLE?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:30
I doubt it, but it wouldn't surprise me if he gets most or all of some team's MLE.
Free Luka Garza
12:31
After drafting Jalen Duren, trading for Marvin Bagley, and still having Isaiah Stewart on the Roster, will Luka Garza get any playing time on the Pistons?  Does not seem likely.
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:32
I don't see much of a path to playing time for Garza. We'll see today if the Pistons even pick up his team option.

do you believe the Jazz will find a trade for Gobert or Conley or Bogdanovic?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:33
A Gobert trade feels like it'll be really tricky to pull off, based on how the Jazz value him and what other teams are willing to give up. Of those three, I'd peg Bogdanovic as the most likely to be dealt.

12:33
is there a chance the knicks are on of the teams in on murray
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:34
I'm sure they've at least checked in, but it seems like they're pretty zeroed in on Brunson right now. The Kemba Walker salary dump wouldn't have been necessary if they planned to trade for - rather than sign - a point guard.
Carter
12:34
What should the raptors be doing this offseason?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:35
I don't hate the idea of simply re-signing Boucher and Young (assuming the prices are fair), using the MLE to sign a center or point guard, and focusing on developing the current core. They were a top-five team in the East and some of their key guys (Barnes, Precious, etc.) are far from finished products.

Mavs need a combo forward to throw in into the rotation mix of Dodo, Bullock and Bertans. They have a MLE to offer. My preferences: (1) Nic Batum (2) Otto Porter (3) Taurean Prince. Do any of these options seem plausible or do you have any other ideas?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:38
If the Mavs only have the taxpayer mid-level to offer, I think they may be hard-pressed to land Batum or Porter, who should get higher offers. I like all three players, but Prince is the most realistic target at that price point. TJ Warren could also be an intriguing roll of the dice, though his defense is more of a question mark.

You think the Bucks will pursue someone like Gary Harris or Oladipo in tree agency? They need to update their wing rotation (especially shooting guard).
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:39
I think Gary Harris would actually be a really nice fit for them, but I don't have a sense of what his price tag will look like. If they can get him for $4-5MM or so, that'd be a great pickup, but maybe he's more of a full MLE guy. It's hard to know how teams will evaluate players who put up solid numbers for bad teams.
Matt
12:40
Seems a lot of speculation on who Bulls might use MLE on  but is it not correct that using full MLE(10.1 mil or so) would put them into luxury tax?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:41
It likely would put them in the tax, but they'd still be a little below the tax "apron"/hard cap, so it's possible. It's just a matter of whether you believe ownership is willing to pay the tax or not.

Any word on interest in Gary Payton II?  What kind of contract are you expecting him to get?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:42
Michael Scotto reported today that execs are expecting something in the $6-7MM range for him, which is about in line with what I projected. I'll be curious to see if the Warriors are comfortable bringing him back at that price or if they prioritize Looney.

What dark horse rookie would you not be surprised to win ROY?
Alex Kirschenbaum
12:44
I haven't taken a look at the odds and I suppose he's not a true "dark horse" as a top-six pick, but I could see Bennedict Mathurin being in the mix. Curious about what other readers would say here. Any dark-horse ROY picks out there?
