Roster stashing
11:00
I'm confused with regards to your Article from the other day.  Seems like the Rockets and Pacers are legally stashing players on their Roster.  They both have 18 players on their Official roster?  Is there a Drop-dead date, as to when they have to reduce down to 15 players?
Dana Gauruder
11:03
Teams can have excess of players on the roster during the summer but obviously they don't want to hand out a bunch of guaranteed contracts and get stuck paying guys that won't be on the opening night roster.
Ayton
11:03
Do the Pacers make the most sense for Ayton? They loathe a full rebuild and this would help them a lot. Seems like Detroit is out of the picture?
Dana Gauruder
11:05
Detroit's interest tanked once it worked out a draft-night trade for Duren. The Pistons are high on him, plus now they've got Stewart and Duren to eat up minutes there on rookie contracts. Indiana seems like the main landing spot for Ayton. There's the matter of clearing more cap room to fit in a max or near max slot for him. That appears to be the holdup.
Nets
11:05
If the Nets don't trade Durant before the season starts, there's no way he just sits out, right? Should the Nets feel any pressure to move him if the offers just aren't there?
Dana Gauruder
11:08
It's generally assumed if the Nets don't find a deal for Durant, he'll play. He's not the type who will sit out and wait for something to happen, considering he's not playing for a contract -- he's already signed the extension. If I'm the Nets top exec, I don't feel pressure to move Durant right now. You wait until you can get fair value for him.

If the Knicks acquire Donovan Mitchell, they would have a very small backcourt with he and Brunson. Where would rank that backcourt compared to the rest of the Eastern Conference?
Dana Gauruder
11:10
The ESPN/Fox Sports can debate where the backcourt pairing would rank. But that is one of the curious aspects of the Mitchell pursuit. It is a small pairing and would seemingly be quite vulnerable at the defensive end. They'll put up points but can they prevent them? Mitchell Robinson would have to block a whole bunch of shots.
Evans
11:11
What package would you expect if you were Danny Ainge from the Knicks for Donovan Mitchell?
Dana Gauruder
11:13
They reportedly like Grimes a lot. I would think Barrett would have to be part of the package -- what would the Knicks do with Barrett with Brunson/Mitchell anyway? Plus at least 2 or 3 first-rounders. If Barrett isn't part of the deal, add a couple more first-rounders. Plus another contract (Fournier?) to make the salary numbers match up.

When will Ben Simmons appear in a game again? If his back is healthy, will that be enough?
Dana Gauruder
11:15
Put it this way -- if he's healthy enough, he better play. He sat out a whole year and he's on a max deal. Yes, I fully anticipate seeing Simmons in uniform next season.
Aaron
11:16
Are the Bucks done? I still feel like there could be upgrades/depth to be found at reserve center and wing. Anyone you think should be on their radar?
Dana Gauruder
11:18
Horst did an extensive interview with The Athletic this week and the tone suggests they're basically done. Getting Portis back was the top priority and that was accomplished. They also rolled the dice on Ingles with the expectation he will help them by midseason.
Free Agency - Bigs
11:19
Not hearing much about Dwight Howard, Hassan Whiteside or DeMarcus Cousins being linked to specific Teams.  What's the word on the street ?
Dana Gauruder
11:20
Unfortunately for those guys, it's no longer 2017. There's just not much of a clamor for an old-school center and Cousins wore out his welcome in Denver. They may have to wait for injuries to occur in-season to get another contract.
Free Boban !!
11:22
What are the chances that the Rockets hold onto Boban Marjanovic ?
Dana Gauruder
11:23
Not quite sure what their plans are for Boban. If they keep him, it will be more for what he brings off-court than on-court. They're intent on playing the young guys.

With how impressive Tari Eason has been in SL. What do you think his chances are of starting over the likes of Gordon(if still there) Christopher etc and getting looks for all rook 1st? He looks like a top 2 way player in the making. I appreciate SL isn’t the same but he looks very good and deserves more than being buried in the rotation going into the season.
Dana Gauruder
11:26
Eason certainly has enhanced his prospects of being a rotation player but you can't read too much from Summer League games. You have to see how these guys do vs the vets before coming to any conclusions as to how they'll impact their teams. The fact that he landed with the Rockets, rather than a contender, gives him a better shot of being at least a second-unit factor.
Bulls2022
11:27
Why didn’t the Bulls use the trade exemption?
Dana Gauruder
11:29
A lot of trade exceptions go by the wayside. I believe you are referring to the $5 mill exception, which isn't substantial. It's those bigger ones -- excess of $10 mill -- that are more likely to be used. Simply put, the Bulls didn't find a deal useful enough to employ the exception.

On paper what issues do the Bulls have if they stay healthy?
Dana Gauruder
11:32
Health is the big if, right? Ball's knee isn't healing as quickly as anticipated. On paper, that's a pretty solid group. Lots of backcourt pieces, dynamic scorers (LaVine, DeRozan). Big question is how the Vuc-Williams pairing works up front. Really didn't get to see that last season because of Williams' injury. Looks like a playoff team for sure, perhaps good enough to get out of the first round if all goes well.
Mid-season tournament
11:32
So what if Players get Injured going all-out for that Bonus pay during the Mid-season Tournament?  If I am a team, maybe I wouldn't want my Players participating.  There is a reason why the All-Pro game is played after the Season.
Dana Gauruder
11:35
The Players Association has to sign off on the tournament, which they have yet to done. All the logistics and formats have to be worked out. Seems more like a made-for-TV event, another way to stir up interest during a time in the season when most sports fans are focused on NFL and college bowl games. The fact it was still in the discussion stage at Board of Governors meeting this week suggests it will be at least another year before it comes to fruition.

What do you think the Hornets will do with Miles Bridges? The local media here in Charlotte isn't touching the topic.
Dana Gauruder
11:41
Everything is still up in the air after the domestic violence allegations surfaced. There was talk that the Hornets would pull their qualifying offer to Bridges, but that has yet to occur. Bridges' career, in general, is in limbo until we see how this all plays out. At the very least, Bridges has lost tens of millions in projected earnings that he would have gotten on the market.

Do Kings do anything else? Maybe a 3rd team in a KD or MITCHELL TRADW?
Love some of their off-season moves.
Dana Gauruder
11:45
On paper, the Kings have a pretty solid rotation right now with the additions of Monk and Huerter. Obviously, they should be a much better 3-point shooting team with that duo. You add in Murray, probably the most NBA-ready player in the draft, and it has been a nice offseason for Sac. I do wonder where Barnes fits in with this group. Will they play Murray and Barnes together extensively with Sabonis at C? If so, where does Holmes figure in the mix?

If you are the Raptors,  what is the most you give to get Durant? I think Siakam,  Trent, and bunch of 1sts...thoughts
Dana Gauruder
11:48
The rumor mill says that the Raptors don't want to give up Barnes in a Durant deal, so Siakam would be the logical alternative. I don't think the Nets would do that deal without either Barnes or Siakam as part of the package. Toronto has a clean sheet regarding first-rounders -- they own all of their picks and don't owe anyone else's future first-rounder. So you'd probably be looking at giving up 3 or 4 future first-rounders to finish off a deal.
Number man
11:49
Why so many laker trade rumors? They have no trade assets besides a couple draft picks and THT. Is it just click bait?
Dana Gauruder
11:52
The Lakers are always going to be talked about, whether they're good or bad. The Kyrie saga has kept that rumor mill buzzing -- seems like the only logical destination, if the Nets are willing to absorb Westbrook's contract. Walker and Bryant were interesting pickups but concerning the Lakers, there's always an expectation they'll make at least one major move every offseason.

11:52
Any insight into how the Aaron Baynes work outs went? And who do you think fits with the Warriors as a third big? I heard Cousins was working out with Draymond recently.
Dana Gauruder
11:53
In terms of Baynes, he reportedly showed good stamina and a solid 3-point stroke. But obviously, it wasn't enough to get immediate offers. Just the fact he's healthy enough to get on the court again is a blessing after what happened to him at the Olympics.
Summer Leage FAs
11:54
Are teams allowed to sign current Free Agents that are playing on someone's Summer Leage team today?  For example, can some team sign veteran 3-and-D man Justin Jackson off of the Celtics summer league squad right now?
Dana Gauruder
11:56
Yes, there are many players on summer league teams who are basically auditioning to get a contract offer, whether it's with the team they're playing for or a rival squad.
Suns
11:57
Do the Suns have a backup plan if they don't get Durant and lose Ayton?
Dana Gauruder
12:00
If a sign-and-trade can be worked out for Ayton (with the Pacers, for example), they'll get something back. If Pacers give him an offer sheet and Suns don't match, then they'll have the cap hold removed to make some other moves. I'm sure they'll have a Plan B for the center spot if they don't retain Ayton.
