Thanks for the early questions, guys! Let's get to it...
Tom Emanski
12:16
Explain the Juan Soto trade in basketball terms?
Luke Adams
12:17
It's certainly a bigger day for our sister site over at MLBTR than it is for us, and the Soto deal is one of the biggest I can remember. It's hard to make a 1-for-1 comparison between NBA and MLB trades, since the concept of top minor league prospects is one that doesn't really exist in basketball -- there are prospects, but they're generally already on your 15-man roster. An MLB minor leaguer is more similar to an NBA draft pick, in that it's a valuable asset but one that may not turn into anything in the long run.
12:18
Having said all that... the Rudy Gobert and Paul George trades are a couple that sorta look like the Soto trade to me -- lots of future assets for one of the league's best players.

As a Pistons fan I'm feeling confused by the resent signings. Can you give me some clarification on this?
Luke Adams
12:20
With Knox and McGruder signed, the Pistons now have 17 players on standard contracts, so they'll need to trade or cut a couple before opening night in October. Kemba will be one -- I'd expect his buyout to get done at some point this month. The second roster casualty could be Saben Lee, Nerlens Noel, Killian Hayes, or anyone else on an expiring contract who doesn't necessarily have a place in Detroit's long-term future. It also simply could be McGruder, since we don't know yet whether his deal is fully guaranteed.

What do you see our punishment for the possible tampering for Jalen Brunson?
Luke Adams
12:22
I'd be shocked if it's more than a second-round pick. It also wouldn't totally surprise me if the Knicks end up just getting a fine, given how much grey area there is when taking into account Brunson's various preexisting relationships to Leon Rose, Sam Rose, his father Rick Brunson, etc. We'll see what the investigation turns up.

Nate Duncan on his recent podcast said that Johnny Davis (paraphrasing) was a 2nd round talent with no NBA skill. Can you offer anything to talk Wiz fans off the ledge?
Luke Adams
12:25
I'm no scout and I don't watch a ton of college basketball, so my assessment of Davis at this stage of his career isn't worth much. I'd take solace in the fact that most draft evaluators who do this for a living were much higher on him than Duncan. And I'd recommend keeping your expectations in check -- you're not expecting a No. 10 pick to be the franchise cornerstone. If he develops into just a solid rotation player, that's OK.

So what’s up with Schroder, McLemore, Morris, Bledsoe, Lamb, Boogie, Dwight, and Whiteside still being available?  I suspect Melo to LAL.  And I know Harrell has a legal issue.  But the other guys I’ve listed would be 15 to 25mpg dudes on any squad.
Luke Adams
12:28
Every offseason, there are veterans who don't catch on with a team until a week or two before training camp and end up playing roles with that team. I expect many of the names you mentioned will fall into that group. Of course, there are also veterans every offseason who never end up finding a job and end up in the 10-day contract pool a couple years before we expect them to. I could see that happening with a couple of the players you listed.

12:28
Do you think that retiring #6 league-wide would be a good way to honor B
Luke Adams
12:29
I'm on board with the idea. He was a trailblazer and one of the most important players in league history. And it's not like there's any shortage of jersey numbers to choose from when you're only carrying 15- to 20-man rosters.

I think the best comp to the Soto trade would be the Kevin Garnett trade. The T-Wolves got back minimal value for the best player in franchise history; Al Jefferson (who they shortly traded) and a bunch of guys. The Nats got fleeced by the Padres; yeah, MacKenzie Gore, Robert Hassell III, Abrams, Wood, and Harlin Susana are good in theory, but literally none of them have impressed at the MLB level yet. And they had to take back a bad contract in either Hosmer or Will Myers to make it work.
Luke Adams
12:30
Interesting insight. Beyond Gore and Abrams, I'm not familiar with the prospects involved in the Soto trade, but I imagine it'll take a few years to fully assess how both sides made out.

Will Myles turner get trade
Luke Adams
12:31
At some point before the 2023 trade deadline? I think so. But I'm not convinced it happens before the season starts. For now, I'd bet on Turner still being a Pacer in October.

What role do you see Malik monk play this season under Mike Brown for the kings? Can he better his numbers than last season.
Luke Adams
12:35
I'd expect his role in Sacramento to be similar to the one he played in L.A. -- he'll probably play 25-30 minutes per game, and see plenty of starts, whether or not he's in the starting five to open the season. I'll be curious to see how often he plays alongside Davion Mitchell, since they make sense as an offense/defense pairing.
I'll predict that Monk will top his scoring average from last season while his 3PT% dips a little.
Jersey Number
12:36
I know that retiring jerseys means nobody on that team can wear it, but what about the Chuck Daly and Cade Cunningham No.2?
Luke Adams
12:37
Daly's family gave Cade their blessing to wear No. 2 when he was drafted: https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2021/07/30/cade-cunning...
That sort of thing is somewhat rare, but there are no hard-and-fast rules governing retired jersey numbers.

I’m growing more and more comfortable with the idea of the Mavs starting the season as is, and seeing what they have around the trade deadline. By then they could have either raised the value of a player to trade, or seen how the new front court and additional minutes for Dinwiddie are shaking out. Thoughts?
Luke Adams
12:39
I think that makes sense. They made their big move of the summer when they acquired Christian Wood. And getting Tim Hardaway back, along with a full training camp for Bertans and Dinwiddie, should help. They'll have options at the deadline if they sit tight for now.
Pistons frontcourt logjam

  • Nerlens, Stewart, Bagley, Duren, Olynyk, etc.   Who is on their way out ?
Luke Adams
12:41
They could all start the season on the roster, but if one of them is moved, I'd expect it to be Noel. He was more of a salary dump than a player they specifically targeted for his skill set. Olynyk is the best shooter of the bunch, and the other three are clearly part of the future plans.

12:41
What do u think about the hornets ?
Luke Adams
12:42
A little disappointed with their offseason, though the turn of events with Miles Bridges was obviously out of their hands. Unless they think Mark Williams is going to be ready quickly, they still have a hole in their frontcourt that hasn't really been filled.

Any chance that there will be a setting where you can get a notification on updated articles? (trackers discluded)
Luke Adams
12:45
The tech side of things falls outside of my purview, but I can pass along the suggestion. It may be tricky because we often make little tweaks to articles (correcting typos, etc.) without adding any actual new information. We'd need to find a way to differentiate between those and the actual updates.

12:45
If Russel's #6 is retired, do you expect the NBA to do what MLB did when Jackie Robinson's #42 was retired leaguewide, and allow all players who were active at the time to have their numbers "grandfathered" in?
Luke Adams
12:45
Yeah, I don't think they'd make anyone change immediately.
12:46
For what it's worth, I haven't seen any indication the NBA is actually considering this idea. It's purely a fan/writer suggestion at this point.

12:46
Does Meyers Leonard still have a future in the NBA/Basketball?
Luke Adams
12:49
I believe we'll see him sign another NBA contract at some point. He seems to have shown genuine contrition for the anti-Semitic slur, he's still just 30 years old, and his skill set doesn't make him a dinosaur (he's not a particularly versatile defender, but he can shoot at least).
Some Guy
12:50
Does Caris LeVert really have any defensive upside for the Cavs? Because he was outright awful last year. Brandon Goodwin was better at defense.
Luke Adams
12:51
LeVert isn't going to be a lockdown defender, but he has the size and athleticism to hold his own on that end. His health will go a long way toward determining how effective he can be -- his back and foot injuries last year likely affected his lateral quickness.

any Rumors about where Dwight, Boogie, Whiteside and Caulet-Stein might be Signing?  Utah especially could use a vet Big Man.
