Hello and Welcome to the panel discussion on "AI-driven stories: How journalists can work with robots and algorithms"
5:16
The panel will feature; Lisa Gibbs (Dir. of News Partnership), Ben Rudolph (MD of Microsoft News Labs), and Reginald Chua (CEO of Reuters).
5:19
Reginald Chua: The field really moves quickly, struggling to keep up on how news room can be up to date. So how will AI affect news distribution, product and so on.
5:20
5:21
Lisa Gibbs: With technology involved we face more challenges. How individual journalists can work with the AI and robots to find out and discover the news.
5:22
Ben Rudolph: The biggest shift on the theoretical level is the challenge to tell the stories more compellingly. Taking the things to a new level requires a complex system, but now it's at a point where local journalists can really go to a lab and do that.
5:23
BR: identifying people in videos and similar processes required a complex model, but now it's become widespread and comparatively simple.
5:25
RC: How can tech help in doing the job more efficiently?
5:26
LG: The technology helps us to create different versions of stories. Now we can think about how we can use the summary and use the algorithm.
RC: If the Machine is writing, then what is the job of the journalist?
5:28
LG:Role of AI in journalism is to generate the content and not just publish it. The algorithm helps in specifying data.
5:29
RC: AI enables much more interactive communicaton. But How close are we to getting truly interactive experience?
5:30
BR: Next phase is probably the depth experience, an immersive number of data.
5:31
BR: With starting to ask more factual questions, the answers have to be factual as well. The natural flow of the conversation used by the new conversational bot is in this way, proving to be successful.
5:32
LG: Now I would like to ask you Reginald, how does the definition of the story change, with AI?
5:33
RC: The machine helps you create different versions of the story, which changes the definition of journalism. Your job becomes fast.
5:34
RC: The AI also helps in focusing more on the fact-checking aspects of journalism.
BR: Using certain tools and capabilities it is possible to not just answer questions or specific functions, but also recommend other similar functions. "Knowing the information is there but can't get there" shall not long be a thing, which till now has been a burden to reveal data to viewers and the user base.
5:38
5:41
LG: Technology has been changing our job since we started it. We've been testing an event-detecting technology with AP, and it is an AI. But we don't say it is an AI.
5:42
That wraps our coverage of the event. Thank you for joining us.
