Its clear the Pens are going to need cap space next season. I think a move will have to be made either before deadline or in summer. Which player making a decent amount of cap can you see dealt? Maatta? Pearson? Hornqvist (highly unlikely but still)?
Jason Mackey
1:19
It won't be Hornqvist. Would really doubt that. I think the first two are entirely possible, especially with Riikola coming up. Depends, of course, on other factors -- Johnson, Pettersson, health, etc. But Riikola does a lot of what Olli does for a lot less. If I'm thinking business-wise, I have to entertain that. And Pearson, sure, they could look to move him, but I don't know what they're going to get at this point, unless he picks it up the rest of the way.

Jason,  Put on your head coaching cap and tell me what two forwards and one d-man, you would remove from the lineup when Pens return to full health (Malkin, ZAR, and Shultz).   For what it is worth, my choices to sit would be Tanner Pearson, Cullen, and either Pettersson or JJ.   My guess is Bleuger and Riikola will sit but should not!

My top 12 would be 59, 87, 27, 17, 71, 81, 14 (makes too much), 19, 72, 12, 7, 46 ... with the possibility of using 53 for 12 or 46 if either struggles.

Does Jarry have any trade value? And would they have any interest in trying to trade him?
Jason Mackey
1:21
He would, yes, but I don't think you can do it at this point with Murray's injury history. He's a stud when he's healthy, but there's been too many injuries with him. Too risky, IMO. And yes, I felt differently before, thinking Murray had turned a corner. I was wrong.

actual work? Talking to some of these buffoons on this chat is work

Never!

Surely GMJR is done making trades right?
Jason Mackey
1:22
I don't think so, no.

Hey BROTHER. What's the chances of one of our boys laying down the law and throwing Brassard into next week?
Jason Mackey
1:22
Doubtful, brother.

Hi again, Jason.  Love your work and these chats!   I'm wondering if there's any way this team can just "turn it on" come playoff time and stop being so schizo?   Losing to bad teams at home hasn't worked out well for the Steelers.   Also, are you getting worried about Murray''s ability to stay healthy thru a long playoff run?  I finally am starting to worry.  Thanks...dan
Jason Mackey
1:23
Hi Dan. Yes, I am worried about Murray. It's been a lot. But what can you do? And, no, I don't think they can just turn it on. I think they can turn it around and start playing better down the stretch. But I don't think they can be so up and down throughout the regular season then expect that stuff to stop come playoff time.

Hi Jason, what are your thoughts on the Pens changing to a down low type of style? And do you think that it can be a smooth successful change?
Jason Mackey
1:24
I don't think it's as big of a change as people are making it out to be, honestly. They want to hang onto pucks, right? Of course they do, because when they're not, they're making stupid turnovers that are leading to odd-man rushes. It's also a subtle change in the way the game is being played -- basically puck possession being valued more in time than attempted shots -- and they're trying to do their part. I don't see it as being drastically different, though.

I'm starting to wonder about Murrays health going forward.  Being injured and out for an extended period seems all to common with him and as we know your only as good as your goal tending.  Would you agree Penguins need to make it a priority to have a solid backup if not a 1B?  If so who is available?
Jason Mackey
1:25
I don't think you're going to see them target a 1B-type at the deadline. I think they're fine with DeSmith (and Jarry, if need be).
Christian
1:25
Jason, do you think McCan can fill the 3C roll? And could you see the Pens trading for Zuccarello? My guess is that GMJR makes a trade for a Malkin winger.
Jason Mackey
1:25
I love the player, but I don't see how GMJR could make that happen and not get raked over hot coals. Here's a crazy option: What would be the worst thing about trying to bring back Hagelin? Might be able to do it on the cheap.

Keith Urban? The NHL has no clue and hasn't for years on who to book musically. You're telling me of the numerous Philly musicians they couldn't get 1 of them?
Jason Mackey
1:26
This is not breaking news. They had Kid Rock play the ASG last year.

I’ll necer bring his name up AGAIN after this... but what are the chance brass gets flipped from FLA at trade deadline? Do you think he resigns with them longer deal?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Nah, he's getting flipped.

Do Pens need to go out in offseason and get a co-number 1 goalie? This Murray thing is out of control and raises my blood pressure to unhealthy levels
Jason Mackey
1:26
I don't think so, honestly. It would make their DeSmith signing a waste of money.

Do you rent cars on the road, Uber or hitchhike?
Jason Mackey
1:27
Rent cars or Uber, depending on the city and how close I'm staying to the rink. Haven't tried hitchhiking yet. Post-Gazette might frown upon that.

Iceburgh.

With the pack of teams in the East tightly stacked, there's still a chance the Penguins do not make the postseason. Ten of the teams jockeying are all very good and could slide past any to make it in. So is that (and I think it should be) the logic in finally keeping the team's first-round pick, in case they're in the lottery? Plus as you and others have said, the team is reticent to deal a first-rounder for a rental.
Jason Mackey
1:28
I think GMJR knows that, sooner or later, he needs to make a first-round pick, simple as that. Ha. I think he's also starting to think about keeping open this championship window and a couple first-round picks would help in that regard.

Hey Jason...... your the best....oh speaking of best, I know you are under contract with the fan but I sure do miss you on Mark Madden....you 2 are the smartest hockey minds around and miss the 2 best. The guys on the fan are clueless about hockey. I guess thats why they need you haha ...sorry there isnt a question there but just wanted to let ya know
Jason Mackey
1:29
Thanks, Bill. I appreciate that, although I don't agree with the comment about the Fan guys. While I would be all for more hockey talk, they know what they're talking about. You should see the binder Poni carries around with clips and research and such. As for Madden, I like Mark a lot. We're friends. Everyone at iHeart was awesome to me. It just made more sense for me professionally to sign with the Fan.

Hi Jason.  HCMS constantly remarks about playing the "right way."  However, these Pens rarely play consistent hockey.  This far into the season and the same error prone and uninspired play is repeated over and over.  I do not see anything changing.  Do you?
Jason Mackey
1:30
I do find it amazing how hard Sullivan tries to fix things, and his players still refuse to do something of those things some nights. And I really don't think this is a tune-out-the-coach thing because they tune him in for periods, too, and they're really good. It's just weird. All of a sudden they just don't feel listening or taking instruction or something.

Hey Jason  I was getting concerned about Murray again ...seemd like he was staring to give up some softies again. Do you know how severe his injury? He is stiil our best chance
Jason Mackey
1:31
I don't think it's too severe. I think it's more the type of thing where it's better to miss one or two games now as opposed to 10-15 down the road.

Have you ever consider video conferencing these chats? I'd be happy in more ways than one to see your pretty face
Jason Mackey
1:31
No, I have not. Because I'm sure that face you referenced would probably break whatever software it is we'd be using.
