What is the Pens’ biggest need at the forward position for next season?
Jason Mackey
2:41
Someone at left wing who can skate and score some goals.

Serious question: With Malkin, could a new baby have an impact on his play this year? I have to think players' personal lives have more to do with their performance than we're wiling to acknowledge sometimes. I think AB's blowup is largely driven by chaos in his personal life ... but that's a little off topic.
Jason Mackey
2:42
Ha. Previously the narrative was that being a father has helped Malkin -- that was when he had a good year last year. Poor Nikita. Already being attached to his dad's up-and-down nature.

I put half the blame for this season on JR and MS.  Rutherford made too many trades including the very stupid trade of Hagelin .  He was your fastest player and your coach likes speed and I think it hurt the locker room .  I also think malkin’s play declined after he left .  Sullivan’s constant line shuffling is disruptive and his decision to bench Johnson the first playoff game was bad and sent a bad message to the team .
Jason Mackey
2:43
I don't disagree with you. I think the Hagelin trade was a miss, although I understand why Jim did it. Sullivan showed a lack of patience sometimes, then he was stubborn to change with others. But the players are the ones playing the games, and they got outplayed.

Do you think Hornqvist has a movable contract? I think he's an extremely serviceable guy, but at $5.3M a year for 4 more years for a guy who's 32... If they do decide to move him, do you think Penguins would have to take somewhat of a less favourable contract for maybe 2 remaining seasons in order to move him, or you think he has value to move on his own?
Jason Mackey
2:43
I don't think that's a movable contract. For the reasons you mentioned and also because of the concussions.

Hello Jason as always thank you for doing this chat. So who do you think GMJR is thinking of moving because they are not hungry anymore? Will they try to acquire more youth or slightly older?
Jason Mackey
2:44
I think he will consider moving Phil, and yes, I think they will try to get younger.
Mark
2:44
Also, if Phil is most likely to get moved, what would you consider to be a fair return?
Jason Mackey
2:44
Anything that opens up that cap space.
BVALEPS25
2:44
This is all on Rutherford.
Jason Mackey
2:44
And Jack Johnson.

It’s his fault Phil is playing is last game with the Pens because we decided to g bigger instead of faster
Jason Mackey
2:45
Ha. I think we're skipping a few steps in here.

You think the Pens could resign Hagelin????
Jason Mackey
2:45
No, I don't. He's gonna want too much.

Thanks for the great coverage and the asking of tough questions to temperamental French Canadiens, Jason!   Any insight on how the heck we let Hagelin go? What was the deal here? Speed, experience, always flying around the creases—might have changed the Trotzian game plan.  Any chance we get somebody like him—maybe get him back? I think he would have helped greatly against that team from Long Island.
Jason Mackey
2:46
Man, you guys love Hagelin. The thinking was that the Penguins were playing like crap. GMJR knew he had to do something. Hagelin was on an expiring contract, wasn't doing much, and the Penguins knew they couldn't re-sign him. I don't see how they could get him back, although I'm pretty sure if they did, they would immediately have to erect a bronze statue of him outside of PPG Paints Arena.

Just a different way of looking at things,  but the last 2 years helps me to realize how special the back to back cups were. The '16 team needs to be appreciated as one of the best Stanley Cup winners in the last 20 years. The '17 team was pure grit and will. We are really so fortunate. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:47
I agree. I think people are quick to realize what this franchise has done. A lot of first-world grievances being aired today.

To you agree with Rutherford’s assessment that the team is not close ?  If so what do you attribute that to?  Old players verses young players ?
Jason Mackey
2:48
I don't think it's the right mix of players. You need glue guys -- goofy, great personalities, keep things loose, etc. They don't have one of those, and you probably need a couple. That's on Jim. Also, the head coach runs kind of a tight ship. If I was playing for him, I would like to see him loosen the heck up every once in a while. It's a game. It should be fun.

If you could guess, which players won’t be penguins come October?
Jason Mackey
2:48
Phil and Maatta ... two points.

The cupboard is bare in Wilkes-Barre.  Time to trade Malkin and Letang and stock up on picks and prospects.  Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
2:49
Why stop there? If the AHL team is hurting, you gotta do whatever you can to fix that, right? Send Sid down right away.

Seems like teams that succeed deep into the post season have almost a tandem like netminder set up 1A - 1B. I know the pens seem satisfied with Desmiths play but he isn’t a 1B goalie. Do you think they look to get a better back up, maybe someone that can provide Murray with some veteran back up  and can be trusted in do or die situations( the way sully played Murray at the end of the season he didn’t seem like he could trust Desmith to win a game for the Pens with a sloppy team in front of him)
Jason Mackey
2:50
No, I don't think that's anything they're considering whatsoever. They want Murray to be their guy, and I think he can be their guy.
John
2:50
Jim has spent a ton of time over the past year or two talking about every intangible imaginable. Yesterday he discussed players being content, the team not being tighknit, and even threw a "push back" mention in there. Does he see talent and depth of talent as an issue? at all? They ice several players, particularly defensemen that just don't have the ability. I'd argue they were a tighknit group because they won, not the other way around. I'm terrified they are going to ship out even more talent for lesser players.
Jason Mackey
2:50
I don't know what you're asking, John. Do you think the Penguins don't have enough talent? They have more than enough talent. That talent has underperformed a lot lately, but they're not lacking talent.
Steeler Joe
2:51
Did we seriously underestimate the impact of the loss of Rick Tocchet behind the bench?
Jason Mackey
2:51
Tocchet is tremendous, but I don't think he lost the playoff series. He's a good coach. You move on.
Sheri
2:51
What do you think about the inconsistency with Murray all season?
Jason Mackey
2:51
I thought Murray was among the best goalies in the NHL since Dec. 15, which he was.
John
2:52
How would they justify trading Phil for cap purposes, when they pay their bottom two unskilled defensemen 7.25? It seems completely backward and reductive.
Jason Mackey
2:53
Because they would send a message, one, a message that probably needs to be sent at this point. You're also assuming there's a market for Johnson and Gudbranson, and moving Kessel would free up cap space.
Josh
2:53
Why do you think it will be Phil that gets moved? Is there evidence that's what JR wants to do or is it because writers think he should be?
Jason Mackey
2:53
There's evidence that Jim has listened the past two summers. It would also be easier to trade Phil than Malkin or Letang.
