I'm back, baby!
Jason Mackey
1:16
Carl, it's so good to seeeee you!
HB
1:16
It be nice if the pens had secured will butcher could of sold him on the fact with our injury luck you will be up in 2 weeks from WBS
Jason Mackey
1:17
They tried, believe me. Nothing they can do if the player wants to play right away. Butcher did. His camp denied it, but he did. Devils offered the clearest path.

It’s a long season but when do you think they will try sheanan with Phil so we can go back to having 3 dangerous lines
Jason Mackey
1:17
Right now they're happy with 62-15-72. ... Again, right now. If it doesn't perform, I think they will try. But we have to give Sheahan more than one game here before we want to change his line, right?
HB

When is sam getting his chat he be the second best chat at the post gazette only behind you of course
Jason Mackey
1:18
Ha. Thanks. I'm told he'll be starting a Monday mailbag.

When sprong gets pulled up who’s line do you see him playing on Crosby malkin or sheanan
Jason Mackey
1:18
Don't know yet. Maybe Malkin if Kessel and Sheahan work, just because of his shot and how much of a weapon that would be for Malkin. I'm not sure his game -- which resembles Kessel more than anyone else -- would mesh all that well with Crosby, although I could be wrong.

I love this Pens team, but as presently constructed, it seems like we don't have enough margin for error to win the cup again. Goaltending may be a solvable problem in house. However, while it seems the  third line can be pretty good at defense and forechecking and puck possession, I'm not sure anyone on the third and 4th lines has good enough hands to set up the bangers or put the puck in the net. What say you? Will we get enough even strength production out of the bottom 6?
Jason Mackey
1:20
I worry about the offensive production coming from the fourth line. They're not getting much -- that group has had one good game out of 10 -- but I'm not ready to punt yet and say they need to make a trade. Sheahan will be a huge upgrade at 3C. Watch this move. I think it's going to pan out very well. There's a lot inside of him that didn't come out in Detroit. Goaltending will be fine. Murray's one of the best. Jarry and DeSmith are both capable. It's more a team/defense issue ... provided you don't employ Antti Niemi.

Do the pens keep shopping for another center to anchor that 4th line? Rowney or Mckegg really don’t seem like they are up to the task. Maybe, we are spoiled from having Cullen for the past couple of years?
Jason Mackey
1:21
Well, you are spoiled from having Cullen. But GMJR is going to wait and see. No need to make a move now, but yeah, if they're not getting offense from the fourth line, expect them to do something. They know -- probably better than anyone -- how much their center depth contributed to those Cups.

1:21
What do you think GMJR's long term plans are for back-up goalie?
Jason Mackey
1:22
I think he's going to keep an eye on the market. I also think it could be DeSmith or Jarry. I don't think GMJR would have a problem if, say, DeSmith came in and took the job. He gets first crack. If he doesn't get it done, they'll go to Tristan. If he doesn't get it done, they probably make a trade. Next year ... that's too far off with this team.

Jason, Thanks for the chat! Love the Sheahan pick up. Looks like a backup G will be on the radar. As the team stands now (barring injuries) will the Pens need any additions at the trade deadline. Looks like this team can focus on streanthening as a team....instead of wondering who may be added/moved at some point this year. Go Pens and love the direction they are heading.
Jason Mackey
1:23
I would keep a defenseman in mind, for the reason we're seeing now; you almost can't explain it, but they always get hurt. I'd be monitoring backup goaltender and fourth-line center, in case McKegg/Rowney don't add something offensively over the next, say, six weeks.
Dave
1:23
When do the pens bring up Pedan to see what he can bring to the team?
Jason Mackey
1:24
I think it's close. But right now they want to see what they have with Trotman, and they want to allow Pedan to get acclimated. I don't think it's far off.

I see now some are saying I am too serious and need to lighten up. You’d think I could get some slack after my excellent start?  Geez
Jason Mackey
1:24
Haha. I didn't say you needed to lighten up. I said Reaves' outgoing personality was good because you need a few of those to go with the quiet guys like yourself.
Frankie C
1:24
I apparently can skate pretty well, but what else do I bring to the table?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Honestly, Frankie, I haven't seen enough of you to say.
JamesinNYC
1:24
Would you like to take a bow for the Sheahan signing?
Jason Mackey
1:25
No way. I'm not a fan of celebrating myself or crowing about something. Just hoping to do good work and have yinz guys read it.
Yinz guys and gals, I should say.

Sprong is really doing well in the AHL.  Why not bring him up and put him on Crosby's line instead of Sheary?
Jason Mackey
1:26
Because Sheary is second on the team in goals with four and scoring at a better clip than he did last season? He's also producing shots and shot attempts at a better rate, if I'm not mistaken. Again, they want Sprong to develop more and get his confidence. He's doing that. Just because he's scored a couple goals doesn't mean their goals change. In fact, my Friday story on Sprong focuses on an adjustment they had him make down there that explains why this move was important.

Murray in net tonight?
Jason Mackey
1:27
Yes.
dave
1:27
Do you think they're going to bring in a veteran to backup Murray?
Jason Mackey
1:27
They might. I think they're going to give DeSmith and Jarry a chance to win the job first.
TK
1:27
How serious are they about signing the winger from the KHL that is friends with Malkin?
Jason Mackey
1:27
They inquired. Due diligence. I don't think anything is imminent at this point. I don't think they need him.
Glenn
1:27
Another trade coming anytime soon
Jason Mackey
1:28
I don't think so, Glenn. I think you'll see them try to find some consistency with this group here for a bit.
Nancy Selene
1:28
Hi Jason - do you expect Murray to start tonight? Go Pens!
Jason Mackey
1:28
Yep. Murray will start.
Dale
1:28
Do you think the penguins add another center down the line?
