If you were responsible for building a team, would you build it around me or that dude they call Gretzky?
Jason Mackey

You, Mario. You.

I'm happy with the Pouliot deal, I think they swapped AHL defensemen and got an extra pick to boot. But what do you think held him back? Is it all mental? And what about the nugget that said Vancouver wanted him for Kessler a few years ago, is there any truth to that?
Jason Mackey

I'm not sure. I was not on the beat at the time. As for what held Pouliot back, I do think it was mental. Mike Sullivan's system isn't easy. Playing defense as a young guy isn't easy. Pouliot has some more learning to do, and it was going to be tough for him to do it here because of his one-way contract.

I think M.Backlund in Cal. would be the most ideal 3rd line Center for pens to trade for? He only has this yr left on contract at $3.575mil. and Calgary has like 30mil in d men and Tkachuk to sign and there close to cap now? what do u think it would take for him?
Jason Mackey

I don't think it would make any sense for Calgary to make that trade.

Do you plan to do these Q&A sessions throughout the season? I actively look out for them each week, some of my favorite content to read. Thanks for your time and your thoughts.

We're going to add Sam Werner into the mix soon. Probably next week. I'll inquire about doing two instead of one, but I think they'd like it to stay at one, at least during the first half of the season.

What's Frank Carrado's outlook. When they gave up two guys and a pick for him I tonight maybe he had some upside, now I wonder if it was to get Toronto to take an extra player in the deal.

If they have someone go down, Chad Ruhwedel is the guy. If someone else goes down, I think it could be Corrado. The Penguins like him. At this point it's more a matter of getting an opportunity.

Out of curiosity, just how valuable are draft picks in the NHL? They're extremely hit or miss relative to say, the NFL. In the NHL you never know if even first rounders will make the roster. With that being said, what kind of return could a team get if they were to package every draft pick from a single draft as trade pieces?
Jason Mackey

I'll say this: Bryan Rust, Jake Guentzel and Matt Murray were all third-round picks. Through, say, Round 4, I think they're all extremely valuable, if you have a good development staff, which the Penguins have.

Faska, Haula, Duchene, Spooner, Sheahan... Out of those who do you think would be the best for? And hypothetically what is the ask for Duchene from a pens perspective?
Jason Mackey

I'd go Sheahan because the ask would be small. I also wonder the availability of the others. The ask is not small from Colorado's perspective. Would the Penguins do Maatta/Sprong/1st? My sense is no, and I've been told that wouldn't be enough anymore for Colorado. I wouldn't go beyond that.
OK, folks. That does it for this evening. Hope you all enjoy the game. Let's do this again next week!
