Who’s the odd man out on defense when Schultz comes back?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Could be Oleksiak. Or maybe someone's hurt or traded. It's too early to give you anything definitive on that, honestly.

How safe is our 2019 1st? While I’m 100% on board for risking the future to win now, I don’t see much I’d deal my first for (barring us getting a young player in return). This draft class is quite stacked and I like a lot of the prospects in the 15-25 range (I mean 31st overall!)
Jason Mackey

I would think it's very much in play, assuming the Penguins are in playoff position. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that they go in the tank. Then Jim might try to keep it. But if they are pushing for a decent playoff spot and are one piece away, then absolutely it's in play.

Hi, Jason, with Casey's solid play, is there any word about a contract extension?
Jason Mackey
1:49
No. I wouldn't be shocked if Casey wanted to wait until July 1 to see what he could get at market. If I were advising him, that's what I would tell him.

Hey Jason!  Did you miss me?!?!
Jason Mackey

Of course, Bob. Hope you're well.

Will someone be moved this summer to clear cap to sign Jake/DeSmith/Brassard? If so, who?
Jason Mackey
1:50
They're not going to sign Brassard, first off. ... And they could move someone, but it would probably be a defenseman and it would probably come before the summer.

What is your position with all the rumors that mike tomlin and mike sullivan are switching professional coaching jobs.  I mean I have no doubt that Sully could really turn the steelers around, but what is your take about tomlin?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I think he could do great things for the Penguins. They could not live in their fears, defend every chip of ice, have a next (defense) man up mentality, etc. One perk: There's no clock management in hockey.

In your opinion do the penguins make the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Yes. But right now I don't see how they compete for anything more than winning a round or two.

In terms of D surplus, who would you rather keep, Maata or Oleksiak? I would keep Oleksiak.
Jason Mackey
1:52
It depends on why I'm deciding. I honestly might entertain trading both if it got me enough. Again, it depends on the return.

The Steelers seem to have a policy that when a starter returns from injury he gets his job back, even if his replacement plays well in his absence.  Will the Penguins use the same policy toward Murray?
Jason Mackey
1:53
I didn't know the Steelers had such a policy. ... I think Murray is gonna get the benefit of the doubt because he's won two Stanley Cups. That's not an explicit policy, but that's just the respect most teams give their players who have done something such as that.

Disregard comments, connection went down and question didn’t get out the way I wanted sorry
Jason Mackey

No worries.

Great band in town Saturday night. Too Far To Care is their best work. Check it out sometime
Jason Mackey

Love the Old 97s. Got into them while I was living in Virginia ... same time as I learned about the Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell.

Blues are looking to have a fire sale do you think their are players that can help this team and are obtainable to trade for?
Jason Mackey
1:55
David Perron! No, I'm kidding. I've seen the Penguins as a destination for Pietrangelo. I don't see it happening because of money and assets needed. But after I answered that question, I started thinking: Why not at least call, right? Maybe Armstrong will take some money back. Who knows? ... I don't see many options down there, though, honestly.

Have you had a chance to talk to Murray to see if he feels good and is ready to get back into net and be the goalie we all know he can be?  I think he's going to come back strong.  What do you think Mackey?
Jason Mackey
1:56
I have not had a chance to talk to Matt one-on-one. Maybe tomorrow morning, although it won't be on the record. Do I think he can come back and be all that you think he can? Of course I do. He's done it. Why couldn't he do it again? He does seem to be in a much better place, so that's good news for yinz folks.

Is there any movement on Ron Francis potentially joining the Penguins front office?
Jason Mackey
1:57
It's my understanding that Francis has a personal situation tying him to the Raleigh area. Believe care for one of his kids. That was the issue at the time of his Carolina split, anyway.

Thanks for the link! At what point do you think the Penguins should stop trading 1st and 2nd round picks? This team has gotten really old with no viable prospects in a league going young. Do you think Jim is aware that he needs to build up the system?
Jason Mackey
1:58
He's plenty aware of how his system looks, but he's also not overly worried about it. His bosses want him to win now and maximize the Crosby/Malkin window. He wouldn't be doing that if he held off on making moves because he wanted to keep picks. If they're contending, you're going to see Jim operate the same way. Only if they're out of it, I think, will he worry too much about holding on to those picks.

What’s going on with Geno? Seems like he’s missing Hags...his play has been meh since then and there always seems to be two opposing players on him and he can’t seem to do anything. It can’t be a precipitous drop in ability since he was great in October...is he injured? Tired of Sullivan’s style of play? He seems to be cheating for offense maybe due to lack of confidence in himself or his linemates? Can you ask him?
Jason Mackey
2:01
He would have to be available and physical in the room for that to happen, and that happens only about once a month these days, maybe every three weeks. He talked for like 90 seconds after the Ottawa game, but I wasn't on the trip. ... I think he's cheating some, yes. And I wouldn't rule out him being hurt. Also Hagelin. ... There's a combination of things that they need to get figured out. I'm not sure it's as simple as one thing.

Is it time for the Pens to move on from Malkin while he still has value?  He could probably bring a tough, shutdown defenseman and a top-6 forward in return.  The contrast between Sid, who is giving 150% every night and Malkin is huge.
Jason Mackey
2:01
It is ... right now. Not all the time. Malkin's in a slump. It doesn't mean you trade him. For business reasons and practical purposes. It would be a huge, ridiculous overreaction. He could show up Friday and again be one of the top handful of players in the NHL. He'll be fine.

Why does Sullivan continue to play Maatta and Olek together? They’ve had problems especially getting pucks out of their own end. I liked Maatta and Riikola better. Why is Riikola still sitting for Olek?
Jason Mackey
2:03
And for Pettersson. They like the Pettersson-Johnson pairing a lot, and I think those two stay in. They like what Oleksiak brings from a physical standpoint, and you're not going to healthy scratch a guy who makes more than $4 million for any extended stretch. Maatta also hasn't been that bad.

Jason, I feel I'm very much in the minority beyond Pens mgt, but I think way too many have given up on 19... He's a very skilled player who didn't lose his skills after being traded for. He's not close to being a bust, just needs more time to contribute. I do not want to see him traded, but do understand his value in that regard. This might be an unanswerable question, but what do the Pens need that he can't contribute? I think he is underrated... As always, your work is very much appreciated!
Jason Mackey
2:05
Cosmo, he's played 47 games with eight goals and 8-13-21, I believe. That's more than a half-season. I like Brassard, too, but how much larger of a sample size do you think we need here before it's time to call a space a spade? I'm OK with a little longer -- at wing -- but not much.

The Maatta - Riikola pairing was very good before Riikola was inexplicably put on nacho patrol. Maatta - Oleksiak has been not good. When does Oleksiak get  some nachos so Riikola can play?
Jason Mackey
2:06
Juuso Riikola is apparently the best defenseman ever, and his lack of playing time is the direct explanation to last night's loss in Chicago. ... I would send Riikola down before I would yank Oleksiak out of the lineup in favor of him.
