Jason Mackey

Hi folks and greetings from San Jose, site of the NHL All-Star Game. I'm here today, preparing for media day tonight, and we'll chat at 1. Feel free to leave your questions now. I'll be back the to answer.

And away we go ...
Silicon Doctor

I was talking to my turtle and he loves the NHL and being eco friendly with their jerseys for this game. Any chance you can grab him one when you're out there? He's very special to me
Jason Mackey
12:59
Only if his name is Yertle (Red Hot Chili Peppers song).

You smoking any of that good good while you're out on the West Coast?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I am not, no. Sorry.

Will Trump be charged as an Adult or a minor? Judging by his daily actions it's very tough to tell

Penguins chat. No politics.

When does Jagr finally get his number retired and would he even show up?
Jason Mackey
1:00
I think he shows up. They're gonna wait until he's done playing, though. But I think he very much wants that day of reckoning. Remember what happened the last time Jags played in Pittsburgh: https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/penguins/2017/03/19/Jaromir-Jagr-t...

If you like pizza, be sure to check out Big Daddy's Pizza when you're free. Play your cards right, and I might even join you

Thanks. Hit Original Joe's last night for dinner. Great spot.

Brassard would be better than any 3rd line center they try to get. Why not just stick with him the rest of the year and let him walk
Jason Mackey
1:01
I think you bring up a very good point, and I think that's also something they consider. The options aren't great. Plus, what will you have to give up? It might make it not worth it.

How does San Jose arena stack up to others in the league? Also, I've been to jail before so I don't get scared easily
Jason Mackey
1:03
That second part is none of my business. ... The press box stinks. One of the worst in the league, if not the worst. Gonna be a logistical nightmare for the ASG, but that doesn't actually matter. Not about us. It's a really neat place to see a game, I think. Great atmosphere. Fans are into it. Feels smaller than it is.

Let's get you on the Double M show soon, ok?
Jason Mackey

I have an exclusive contract with the Fan. Sorry.

Jason - does Malikin have the contractual right to determine what teams he could be  traded to?  Thanks for the great Penguin coverage.
Jason Mackey
1:03
Yes, he does. He has a full no-trade clause. Should the Penguins want to move him -- they don't -- he would have to OK it.

Hi Jason. What's your take on Jack Johnson's play? To me he looks horrid. Is there any chance at all he sits when Schultz comes back? I'd really hate to see Riikkola eating nachos in the press box. I hope they don't continue to play JJ because they don't want to admit his signing was a mistake.
Jason Mackey
1:05
I think he's had a bad stretch of games, but before the West Coast road trip, I was perfectly fine with him and Pettersson on the third pair together. I'm not willing to say they stink, Johnson should be benched, etc. Any of the conclusions I'm seeing drawn. They absolutely need to be better. But as far as benching Johnson, I know fans want to see it, but to quote Clark Griswold, I think there's a better chance of me waking up tomorrow with my head sewn to the carpet than there is of the Penguins benching Jack Johnson.

Hey Jason, sounds like you been drinking. Everything going ok with ya?
Jason Mackey
1:05
No drinking here, Gerry. Well, coffee. Have had two cups of coffee.

Who's your pick to win Best Picture?
Jason Mackey
1:06
Haven't seen any of the nominees. Not a big movie guy, at least not when I have to pay $20 or whatever it costs now for a movie theater ticket.

Hey Jason, love the chat! The question I'm wondering is this: GMJR isn't going to trade Brassard just for the sake of trading him, is he?
Jason Mackey
1:07
No, I don't think so. I think there's a very reasonable way of looking at this and thinking that GMJR isn't gonna do anything because the right return isn't out there. But I do think he's gonna try -- he always tries -- and see if he can't improve that position because there's legitimate concern whether they're good enough there with what Brassard has done ... or really hasn't done.

Who do you believe will win the Super Bowl
Jason Mackey
1:08
I'm taking the Rams.

Any chance they move Maata? Or is Oleksiak more probable?
Jason Mackey
1:09
Oleksiak is more probably. I know you guys (meaning fans) bring up Maatta's name all the time. I get it. It makes sense. But I really don't get the sense the organization wants to move him. I think they view him as a complement to Schultz at this point, especially with how Johnson has played with Pettersson. (For context, the original plan WAS to play Schultz with Johnson, in the top four. I don't know how they can reasonably consider that now, for myriad reasons.)

Could the Pens make a call to St.Louis to see if they would listen on Taresenko? I know it’s far fetched 😬
Jason Mackey
1:09
It's extremely far-fetched.

Any idea of when Schultz will be back? Earlier than expected or..?
Jason Mackey
1:11
I think a little earlier than expected. A "hard" four months puts him back on Feb. 15. I think he's probably back with the team soon after the break, then into a game around the Feb. 7-10 range. Maybe on their Florida trip, now that I think about it.

Hey there skip. Can you secure me a ticket to a future game and I will sit with you and discuss pleasantries of life. You'll enjoy it, trust me.
Jason Mackey

I cannot. Sorry.

Dreger and LeBrun said on TSN Hockey that Pens have inquired about Ferland, and for money reasons, Brassard could be going back.. do you see the logic in that, with the Pens adding Jarry/picks/prospects.. and then having them deal Oleksiak or Maatta for 3C?
Jason Mackey
1:14
I see the Penguins liking Ferland and liking what he brings. I think he could indirectly improve their third line. Where it breaks down for me is why in the world would Carolina want Brassard. To make a run? Doubtful. If they're willing to trade Ferland, it's probably because they're looking to the future. Maybe they take Brassard and try to build around Jarry/Oleksiak/picks, but I think another team will probably offer a more enticing package. Just my opinion. I think they'll try. I just think it'll be hard to make it happen given what they're peddling and what the Canes can demand.
