It is not time to panic. Hang in there and wait for Schultz to return. Many problems will be solved and many areas strengthened.
Jason Mackey
1:38
Agree with that, Rick.

Is it me, or is it that we are in a similar boat again this year where the Penguins struggle before Christmas, then turn things around afterwards??
Jason Mackey
1:39
It's not all that dissimilar, honestly. They're hardly out of it.

Hi Jason, here are Phil Kessel and James Neal's Penguin career averages...can you guess which is which? (.342goals/gm, .919pts/gm  |  .447goals/gm, .924pts/gm)?  What does Phil do that renders him "untouchable" for a trade?  If Neal brought Hornvy and a piece, couldn't Phil do the same?  (NOT saying it should or needs to happen, just curious)
Jason Mackey
1:40
If there's a trade out there that GMJR could win the way he did the Neal/Hornqvist trade, I'm sure he would seriously consider it. The team would hate losing Phil, trust me. Fans, too. Plus, Kessel is consistent offense. When you haven't gotten that a ton, why would you trade your best guy who does it?

Jason, I asked this question to DK and he really didn’t answer it. Are there any recent updates on the old Igloo site? I’ve been to both a patriot place at Gillette and The Battery outside of SunTrust Park and both venues really add to the game day/fan experience and I think it’s a shame that us Penguins fans don’t have a venue like this yet given that the demolition of the Igloo has been a while now. Thanks

There's a bunch of wrangling between Penguins, the city and getting people to develop the land. Like Dejan, I don't have a huge handle on it. Mark Belko handles that for us. But I agree with you that it's taken entirely too long and that sorta stuff adds to the environment. Columbus is really good that way, too.

Espn has their quarter season update for each team, and suggested the Penguins may move Rust for defensive help? Do you think that is an idea Rutherford has in mind?
Jason Mackey
1:42
I'm sure he's considered it, but Rust makes $3.5 million per season and has one goal in 26 games? What sort of defensive help would GMJR be getting in return?

What's happening with Kessel on the PP right now?  Everything used to run through him and I believe he was what made the Pens PP one of the most dangerous in the league.  Before that, Crosby, Malkin, et al just couldn't figure it out.  But now, Kessel's not even trying to shoot, making it easy for teams to defend.
Jason Mackey

I think their power play issues are hardly blamable on Phil. They all need to be better. They're trying to get too cute, and they need to fire it, Phil included. They've shown glimpses but nothing consistent.

Hi Jason!  Enjoy your work!  So I'm guessing JR must be pretty frustrated.  He's pretty much tied in knots with salary cap issues and not much to deal anyway.   Aren't we in a season where we're locked into the roster we have-for better or worse?   And Murray or bust?  Thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:44
Hey Dan, thanks for the kind words. I don't think GMJR is that frustrated, honestly. He wants his team to play better, but things have improved. I think he's optimistic they're almost out of it, even though that sentiment seemingly isn't shared here. ... You're right about Murray, though. There's nothing reasonable they can do here. If he can't recapture his old form, they're screwed.

Hello Jason, I need some advices, it seems I cannot find the beast mode I've been associated with, I am in a little slump, cannot score regularly, cannot dribble like I used to past through one or two opponent players, turn the puck over too often, my skating seems slow, even though I've been skating earlier this summer. I came in good shape and had a season beginning. But now even some fans want me out of town, help me! Do you think I should be traded? I know I'm elite but what can I do to get back on track?
All the best, The Beast

You're not getting traded, Geno. I can promise that. Might want to try a few more safe plays, though. Let your linemates carry the puck a bit. Shoot it when you get it and no retaliatory penalties.
Matt
1:46
I see Daniel Sprong scored last night. I also have followed with interest the accomplishments of Ryan Reeves in Vegas (6g/4a/10p), who appears to have some talent tipping pucks and plays a Hornquist-type role on the PP in Vegas. Ian Cole. The two trades to get a third line center -- neither of them have worked out. Is the list of people who didn't get a chance who are working out elsewhere and trade misses getting too long?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I don't think it's getting too long, Matt, but I think you bring up some interesting names. I think it's starting to become more than a fluke. And these are decisions that are mostly on the coach. I think the world of Sullivan as a hockey coach, but none of these situations we're talking about have been handled perfectly.

Who is the Penguins NHLPA rep, and have you had a chance to ask them their thoughts on a potential lockout?
Jason Mackey
1:47
We don't know. Honest to God. Since Craig Adams left, they're guarding this secret with their lives.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Friedman broke yesterday about the Pens shopping Phil?  If so, what kind of return do you think we'd get for him?
Jason Mackey
1:48
GMJR did the same thing over the summer. I'm not sure why it's a big deal now. Jim made it known that he would listen to offers on Phil, and they'd have to be good. Nothing came close, so he moved on. It's not much more than that now.

What is your least favorite questions. A. 3rd line center from last year. B. Sprong C. Maatta and Johnson D. Murray E. Different question
Jason Mackey
1:48
E. All day long.

will the Penguins move Brassard at the deadline? what kind of return would you expect?
Jason Mackey
1:49
If they move him, I think they need to get someone who's comfortable functioning as a third-line center. Someone like, say, Lars Eller. That Bonino guy in Nashville is interesting.

Do ruhwedel, Brassard and Sheahan all move on this summer?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I think so, yeah. I think Brassard would prefer to be elsewhere. I'm not sure the Penguins are getting enough out of Sheahan to justify another deal with Blueger coming up. Ruhwedel, I guess the Penguins could keep him around as the No. 7, but my guess would be he wants to play more. Think he's probably deserved that, too.

Grant for 3rd line center!
Jason Mackey

A trade? Or move Grant there?

Down two, when do you think is the ideal time to pull a goalie (if at all)?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I like about a minute per goal ... closest to with possession, and I'm OK going early. So, about two minutes.

It seems like there's something strange going on with Murray.  DeSmith was given a couple of starts ahead of him, and then he suffers a mysterious injury.  Is he in Sullivan's doghouse like Sprong and Cole were?
Jason Mackey
1:51
No, I was reassured a couple days ago that Murray did suffer a legitimate injury. Has nothing to do with a doghouse, unless it involved one of Murray's two dogs, which I don't think the injury did.

I don't recall how Cullen got hurt.  do you think this could be a case of just getting him some rest in the middle of the season?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Yeah, I don't think it's the worst thing. I think it happened in Ottawa, as he was sporting an ice pack after the game, per my colleague, Matt Vensel. That was the first any of us have seen of that. As for a specific play, no, nothing I can recall.

Why is Simon playing the the top line with Crosby, and what is the infatuation Sullivan has with him? Seems to be a bit misguided, and makes me question his judgement. And I don't want to hear "Sullivan won two cups, he can do what he wants". The team looks like crap this year.
Jason Mackey
1:53
You sound very excited, Ed. Maybe you should go buy a couple T-shirts and hats to properly channel that excitement. ... I think Simon has been fine. If you're going to try Brassard and Phil, I like Geno and Hornqvist. That leaves Simon or Rust, and Simon would be my choice over Rust.

Hello Jason, I need some advice, it seems I cannot find the beast mode I've been associated with, I am in a little slump; cannot score regularly, stop turning the puck over too often, cannot dribble past through one two players as skillful as usual, and my skating seems slow, even though I've been skating since summer. The fans wants me out... do you agree I should be traded? I'm elite player, but what can I do to get back on track?
All best, Geno

I got it, Geno. Working through 'em. Answered it, too.
