Any chance the Pens are interested in sending a package to OTT for Hoffman? There’s been mention of it in the media and I think he’d be a good fit
Jason Mackey
1:21
What would that package be, Patrick? Hoffman is 28. He's scored 26, 29 and 27 goals the past three seasons. He makes $5,187,500. Ottawa isn't going to give him away. One, you have to send out enough money to fit him. Two, you have to give up attractive assets, and Carl Hagelin is not that right now. I just don't see any way it would work.
Joe
1:21
Why can't the pens top 6 score 5 on 5 goals?
Jason Mackey
1:22
It's a heck of a question. If I had some sort of magic answer, I would sell it for money, believe me. Some of it is bad luck. Sometimes it's types of shots, a willingness to go down low, etc.

It seems Sergei Gonchar is to hockey what Ray Searage is to baseball.  Do you think that position coaches at the professional level really have that much impact on a players game?  What really could  Oleksiak have learned in 2 weeks?
Jason Mackey
1:23
A lot, honestly. And sometimes with these guys -- Oleksiak is one -- it's all mental. What a new staff thinks of you. What a new system looks like. ... Gonchar is really good. I think he'll fix Oleksiak. It's something just taking a new approach to something and working on the weak spots of your game with a fresh set of eyes.

Is 3rd line Center the true need for the Penguins? Or is it just to have 3 scoring lines? As wingers are more commonly available and cheaper to acquire, wouln't adding a scoring winger balance out the forward depth just as well as a center?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Three scoring lines is what they want, but it usually requires a center with some semblance of offense. I like Riley Sheahan, but he's somewhat limited in that regard.
Steven
1:24
As per Craig Custance in the Athletic, Anthony Duclair has asked for a trade out of Arizona. Do the Pens have any interest in acquiring him to your knowledge or is this a recent revelation?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Not to my knowledge.
JT
1:24
Thoughts on what it would take to get Evander Kane? Botterill knows our prospects more than anyone and surely has his favorites, no? And do you think he is enough of a playmaker to mesh with Sid?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Probably more than the Penguins have. Cole, Sheary plus something? I don't think it's workable, nor do I think it is to their benefit, given some of what I've seen about Kane the person. Doesn't strike me as a Sully sort of player.

1:25
Will lack of high-end assets prevent the Penguins from making a substantial trade?  Cole, Hagelin, and possibly Sheary seem like the only pieces on the current roster they may be open to moving.  Sprong and Jarry are really the only top prospects they have.  Anything I am missing beyond those pieces and picks that other teams are going to ask for in any potential trade?
Jason Mackey
1:25
No, you're pretty much on. The only thing you probably forgot is Ian Cole. The Penguins don't really have many assets, unless they want to do something nuclear and, say, trade Phil. I don't think they're going to do that, but it would open up a lot of space cap-wise and put on the market a player other teams would theoretically wany.

weve heard about hagelin, sheary, and cole as trade bait....any off the radar roster player u think could get moved?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I've said Kuhnhackl a couple times. I think he's a tremendous player who might bring something more to a team with a little more opportunity for him.
Geoff
1:26
Do you think GMJR was planning on Vegas as his fallback to get the 3rd line C? How big of a wrench has their success thrown into teams around the league??
Jason Mackey
1:27
I wouldn't call it a fallback, but do I think those are guys Jim had identified who might not be available now? Yeah, probably. Guessing it's that way for a lot of teams, but they're not the only third-line centers in the league.
Eric
1:27
Why is everyone (fans and media) in such a hurry to move Sheary? Just signed a new contract this offseason. His numbers are down this season, but aren't everyones?
Jason Mackey
1:27
A little bit. I think one of the reasons, Eric, is because he's one of the few attractive assets the Penguins could move, get something for and still cover with depth -- I.e. they have a few young and talented forwards.

With total hindsight, would you have kept Fleury and traded Murray this offseason?  Murray isn't much cheaper than Fleury now and he is not showing good signs of a workhorse starter.  But this question is more about the kings ransom that Murray would have fetched in a trade. It would have filled some roster holes and infused at least one top prospect/pick into the system.  Plus we know Fleury/Jarry would be a more than adequate goalie tandem throughout 87/71 primes.
Jason Mackey
1:30
Absolutely not. I think the world of Fleury, but you have a two-time Cup-winning goaltender who's 23 and makes $2 million less ($5.75 compared to $3.75 million). You keep him every time. ... This is only being asked because Murray has struggled some, and you can't think like that as a GM. They made the smartest move they could at the time. ... Go the other way, if Fleury would look God awful in Vegas, would we be rethinking the "king's ransom" that Murray could have fetched? Probably not.

What do you think about Anthony Duclair as a reclamation project trade?
Jason Mackey
1:30
That's not the type of player they need. I'm sure he'd be fine, but he doesn't address their needs.
Sean
1:30
If the team starts winning games, do you see a reason to make a major move?? The team looks pretty good on paper especially with Sheahan on the 4th line now,
Jason Mackey
1:31
No, I don't. Likely neither does Rutherford. So long as they're getting scoring from their third line. That has always been his preference. GM's would much rather just have their guys play really well, so they can sit back and watch. Never happens, but they'd like it to.

I wish, Jags.

2 successful Stanley Cup runs - and more hockey than any other team in the NHL - over the last 2 seasons must be incredibly draining. I know the Penguins are pushing for a threepeat and goodness knows if anyone can do it, it's them - but do you think the team's elite would actually benefit more in the long run from a season where they aren't in contention? They can't exactly take a sabbatical, after all.
Jason Mackey
1:32
I don't think so, Ellen. These guys are what they are because they want to do this every year. You couldn't tell me Sidney Crosby would say, 'Nah, let's just be OK this year, miss out and go get 'em next year.' It would probably help their legs, sure, but nobody wants it.

Do you think Rutherford is realizing no team with center depth is willing to trade with and make the two time defending champs better?   Teams without depth are not going to trade there top 2 centers, they don’t grow on trees.  Should have signed Bonino.
Jason Mackey
1:33
Should have signed Bonino for $4 million over four? No thanks. And it's not so much about making the two-time champs better. It's about making your own team better. Can the Penguins offer players who would make another team better? I have my doubts.
Jason Mackey
1:33
What's up, Jason?
Jason Mackey
1:33
Howdy, self.

I feel these next two games are critical where the Pens need to get at least three points if they want to get back in this thing. Do they roll the dice and bring up a few additional WBSers to see what they got?
Jason Mackey
1:34
No. Absolutely not. Play the guys who won in Philly, fill in the blank spaces and hope to do it again. It's not like if they call up Teddy Blueger they're going to get spotted a two-goal lead.

Do you think Sid is injured or maybe dissatisfied with the coaching/shuffling of linemates? He just seems off this year.
Jason Mackey
1:35
No on all accounts, and I asked him directly about the last one. ... I think he's getting frustrated a bit because he's not converting at his normal clip. There's probably more to the linemate thing than he's letting on, but I don't think it's played a huge factor.

Do you still think Pens make playoffs?
