No, I don't. If they went down in the first round, I think that would have happened. I think he'll be OK for at least another season.

Interesting comment by Susie, my 1st wife divorced me over my insistence that plus/minus is still a relevant stat. Apparently her new boyfriend (Clarence Corsi) is much fancier than me.
Jason Mackey
1:46
What was her exit velocity from the relationship?
Avi

Can we petition to get rid of Pierre Mcguire? Have you noticed that he comes up with nicknames for every player (Tom Wilson is Tommy, Kris Letang is Kristopher, and, my personal favorite Olli MAH-TAH...However, if you listen he calls him that and Maata). Is he just an announcing troll who dies these things to stay relevant?
Jason Mackey
1:47
I like Pierre. He's a very nice man. And, yes, I have noticed that he calls hockey players by cheesy, weird nicknames. Gasp! Is he the only one in the sport who does it?

Obviously Bonino embellished (caps fan view) or reacted (pens fan view), but isn't a stick making contact with opponents shoulder still a high sticking penalty? It doesn't have to hit his head to be a penalty, does it? Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:49
TP, I think Bonino embellished that, sure, but that's not always called. Like holding in football. The best linemen hold a lot; they just aren't dumb enough to get caught. Sort of the same deal here.

I dont think the caps intentional aim to injure crosby but its more then likely the caps wanted to focus on finishing checks and to try and give all pens a hard time.
Jason Mackey
1:50
I agree with this. Although I didn't like how careless Ovechkin was with his leg/stick. It's irresponsible. That said, if it's just Ovechkin, we're maybe talking about a penalty. The combination of Ovechkin and Niskanen together spelled disaster.

I think the way to reduce cheap hits, dirty hits is to give the HC 1 or 2 "non call" challenges per game. The HC could then request the officials review a dirty hit and call the miss. Your thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:50
No way. No challenges. I hate challenges. What's wrong with calling the rulebook and taking legitimate action on serious offenses? Aren't we over-thinking it a bit here?
Bill

$50,000 per minute
Jason Mackey
1:51
Seems like that would warrant a multi-colored chart or something.
Mike
1:51
I agree with you Jason regarding Pierre, he has such a passion for the game and it comes through in his commentary, there sure are a lot of people that don't like him though.
Jason Mackey
1:52
I get why people don't, honestly. I just wish you guys could interact with him on a personal level. Many NBC games I seek him out to talk hockey. He's always helpful, always engaging, always willing. A fountain of knowledge, too. Sometimes too much of it.
Avi
1:52
Urgh, I don't know about you Mr. Mackey lol...regarding the Pierre answer. However, I appreciate you answering my questions. Have a good day. Go Pens!
Jason Mackey
1:52
You too!

What are the odds of Caps trading Ovechkin and starting to rebuild? Zero I'm assuming since he sells tickets. But his goal scoring is largely a factor of the number of shots he takes and he has an abysmal shooting percentage.
Jason Mackey
1:52
Yeah, the Caps aren't trading Ovechkin. Wouldn't hold your breath for that one.

Hornqvist isn't human, right? The abuse he takes in front of the net or blocking shots is insane. Even Don Cherry would have to agree he's a tough Swede.
Jason Mackey
1:53
He's pretty crazy. And I mean that in a good way. The guy's intense, for sure. I'd be OK with him blocking fewer shots. All of them, actually. Hornqvist is a riot, though. It's funny to get his teammates talking about him. They think the same thing.
Jim
1:53
I can't help but look at Ovechkin and see a Russian Eric Lindros. Agree?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Not at all. Ovechkin's longevity is incredible. One of the premier players of this generate, its best goal-scorer. Much, much better than Lindros, IMO.

I'll take Maguire anytime over Milbury - geez he hates the Pens
Jason Mackey
1:54
There's a shocker. A Penguins fan takes somebody over Mike Milbury.
Kevin in Punxsy
1:54
So, it's your opinion that if the NHL management asks the officials to call penalties "by the book", that will eliminate dirty hits??
Jason Mackey
1:55
No. It's my opinion that enforcing the rulebook would ameliorate the situation, at least in some way. So would offering actual, substantial suspensions.
BRUCE
1:55
were you a big Bruce Hampton fan, Jason? He could wail on the guitar and the banjo and sometimes sang.
Jason Mackey
1:55
I'll have to check him out. Never heard of him.
Pope
1:55
Just to confirm what you said earlier. Pens can only protect so many skaters, but in the end they can only lose one player from the roster to Vegas?
Jason Mackey
1:55
That is correct.
Mike
1:55
DOn Cherry would insist Patty Horner is only tough because Crosby is a great leader meanwhile Pierre would point out Hornqvist was also tough when he play in Djugarden
Jason Mackey
1:56
This is a pretty funny analogy.
GPT
1:57
You can't eliminate dirty hits, only penalize them. Niskanen got a 5 minute major and a game misconduct. What more do people want?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Not talking Nisky here. But on the whole, I think the NHL Department of Player Safety could be more strict or dole out larger punishments for dirty hits.
Lisa
1:57
Any chance they bring back Kunitz next year, he is having a great playoff series.
Jason Mackey
1:59
Sure, there's a chance. And he's proving his value these playoffs. I think it somewhat depends on what other teams offer. If someone comes along and pays him $4.5 million over two, the Penguins probably aren't going to match that. But if Kunitz is willing to play on a Matt Cullen-type contract to keep his family here, finish his career in Pittsburgh, try for another Cup and get dedicated bottom-six/PK/occasional PP minutes, then I think the Penguins would love to have him back.
OK, folks. Thanks so much for participating. Always appreciate the good questions and for you hanging out. Let's do this next week!
