When, if ever, will Pedan get at least a look? I would hate to think that Pouliot was traded just for some depth at WB. So far the Corrado and Trotman call ups have been very unimpressive.
Jason Mackey
1:41
They have, I agree. But right now there's no work to be found, nothing at all. Ruhwedel and Hunwick likely be healthy scratches. Pedan will have to wait.

Do you think GMJR regrets shipping away Archibald for Leighton?  Hindsight is 20/20 but goalie depth looks solid and even if you just kept him as a piece for another trade, seems like he could have gone as part of a package to bring the Pens something beyond a goalie that looks like he will never see the NHL.
Jason Mackey
1:42
That move does look interesting, especially now. But I don't think Leighton was ever acquired to play NHL games; he was acquired to back up in the AHL. That remains. Why they gave up Archibald to do it, that much I don't understand.

How much will getting sent down ahead of Desmith ‘screw up’ Jarry for the future? Or is JR showcasing Desmith as part of a perspective deal?
Jason Mackey
1:42
Well, I can tell you that Jim isn't trading a goalie. He told me as much a couple weeks ago. To your first point, I don't think it will at all. Jarry understands why. May not like it, but he understands. DeSmith has played better. I do think Jarry will be back before the season is out.

I know Pens need a 3C, but I can’t help but be intrigued by the speedy Grabner who is rumored to be available, will be a UFA @ end of the year (I believe) and shouldn’t cost too much... on the other hand, who would he replace in the lineup and would he be a depth luxury they can’t afford?
Jason Mackey
1:44
On what planet does a 30-year-old with 48 goals the past two seasons on a $1.65 million deal not cost a lot of funny? Especially when he plays with the speed necessary in today's game. I like Grabner, but I think 3C is a greater priority and will likely hamper their ability to do anything when it comes to Grabner.

How often do the Pens travel to games by team bus?  Any Slapshot-esque poker games being played during those road trips?  And who would be the Ned Braden of the group?  Thnx— keep up the good work!
Jason Mackey
1:45
They also fly to road cities. Once there, they bus from the airport to hotel. They do play cards on the plane. I know Malkin, Kessel and Reaves are part of the games. Not sure who else. Doubt they ever get Slapshot-esque.
1:46
As policy, I don't comment on reports unless you link them. When/if you do, I'll respond.

Hey Jason, what does your secret intel say on who JR almost traded for? saw an article on cbs sports this morning.

Hi Jason! I’ve just read GMJR 20min interview and it seems like the Pens’ recent surge changed his plans a little bit : he is not shopping for a 3C but for a center. I personaly still think the Pens need a Tyler Bozak type player. Riley Sheahan is playing well but I would like to keep him as a 4C able to chip in 3C position if needed. How do you see the Pens trade deadline with the recent roster (r)evolution (Hagelin’s form, Cole recent play, Simon/Sprong ability to play NHL minutes, the goaltending finally comfortable situation...). The Pens look like a totally different team in 2018...
Jason Mackey
1:49
You just asked about 19 questions, I think. Let me try to catch everything ... One, don't discount Rutherford sandbagging a bit. That said, he has maintained all along that he wants someone who can add more offense to the third line. Sure he's hope to more ways of doing that. As for the trade deadline, GMJR isn't trading a goalie, Cole will go, would need to be the right offer for Simon or Sprong; they're probably both most valuable to the Penguins. Hagelin could be had. He's helping his stock by how he's played recently.

Do you think with the pens play over the last month that cole may stay? I mean hunwick as been way worse than cole has anyway
Jason Mackey
1:50
He has. I won't dispute that. But I have a tough time seeing them pay Hunwick $2.25 to sit while Cole plays ... and Sullivan probably clenches his jaw the entire time. Cole is helping his own situation by playing well. Hunwick could use the rest. But I don't think those two things hold.

How did this happen?  One year ago, I'm evolving into a likely fixture on the team's fourth line in the 17/18 season, then I get traded and now I'm back in the AHL.  Do I belong in the NHL?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I've had my doubts, Oskar. Need to produce offensively, bud.
TK
1:50
Do you think Reaves will be in the lineup vs the Caps and Tom Wilson?
Jason Mackey
1:50
Yes, absolutely.
JJ
1:50
If Sullivan is willing to play me, how about flipping me for Cole? I play defense, I'm a friend of Sid's and I could use the cash.
Jason Mackey
1:50
Who is this?
KT
1:50
I would like Derick Brassard. Please make that happen. In all seriousness, could the Pens make a play for him?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I can try, but Rutherford might get a little territorial if I try to execute a trade. Brassard makes $5 million. I'd love to hear how you plan on fitting his contract under the cap.

Thoughts on the play on #6?
Jason Mackey
1:51
I'm not sure I understand your question.
Rahn
1:51
I feel like no one really talks about Filip Gustavsson and his showing at World Juniors. He almost single-handedly ousted team USA and if not for a shot-pass deflection for the game-winning goal, might have pushed Sweden to the upset of Canada. His presence and possible move to Wilkes-Barre next year may play into if Jarry is a tradepiece (if DeSmith remains solid).
Jason Mackey
1:52
Rahn, Rutherford said explicitly that he's not trading a goalie. That said, Gustavsson has flown under the radar because he's playing in Sweden. Not sure why the World Juniors didn't do more. Maybe we were all busy, don't know. But based on their goaltending depth right now, it's hard to imagine where Gustavsson fits. Maybe a tradable prospect?

One last question any idea who GMJR was referring to that he had a trade for a 3 rd line Center and the team changed its mind at the last minute? I am pretty sure you don’t but I was curious and doesn’t hurt to ask
Jason Mackey
1:53
I don't. I also don't know where/how GMJR made those comments.
JP
1:55
what is the pens FA situation looking like? any idea who they will bring back for sure and who will go?
Jason Mackey
1:57
As far as UFAs, I think Reaves and Cole will be gone. I think they really try to sign Hornqvist. Not sure what he's looking for, however -- his agent, Craig Oster, apparently doesn't return phone calls, texts or emails -- so I can't give you a sense of that. I think he will be faced with some very good offers from the outside. ... I also think Rowney will be back, on the cheap.

Why is it that when someone tells you that there’s billions of stars in the universe, you believe them. But if they tell you there’s wet paint somewhere you have to touch it
Jason Mackey

Great question, Bob.

Hey Jason,Did you ever notice that if you blow in a dogs face it goes mad, yet when you take him on a car ride he sticks his head straight out the window?
Jason Mackey
1:57
Terrific point.
RPK
1:57
When the Pens forecheck physically, they are very disruptive in the offensive zone.  Number 15 has stepped up his physical presence lately.  Have you noticed the same thing?
Jason Mackey
1:58
A little. I think Sheahan still has a ways to go in terms of using his entire frame. I'd still rather the Penguins rely more on their speed than trying to bump people.
JP
1:58
who do you think has the best "media face" as in who changes the most when media is around (besides phil)
Jason Mackey
1:59
None, really. Although (for hopefully understandable reasons) I don't know what these guys look like when media isn't around.
