Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 2.22.18

Jason, unfortunately looks like your prediction of Cullen coming back fell flat. Would've been nice but not happening. Unless they get Grabner like Madden said, do you think they should just stay put and ride this one out with what they have?
Jason Mackey
1:41
Billy, trade deadline isn't until Monday. There's time. Was told yesterday by a source very close to the situation that it'll likely come down to that date. Hold your horses.

Your JR, and your in your office on February 26th. You hold the keys to getting this team to winning a third for the boys, who do you acquire? Grabner, Brassard, Cullen, etc? What will the Penguins be willing to part with most?
Jason Mackey
1:41
Cullen. Not worth it for the other two. Hold your assets.

Can the Penguins get to be a top three seed if they continue this awesome play as of recently? Theoretically, they would be the number one seed nobody wants to face.
Jason Mackey
1:42
Easily. They keep this up they might be the No. 1 overall seed. Seriously. Why couldn't they sustain what they're doing now? Stars playing well. Great goaltending. Solid special teams. They're not re-inventing the wheel.

Since Horny is back, what’s the current look of the injury report now?
Jason Mackey
1:43
Kuhnhackl skated on his own this morning. He could return this weekend.

Lot of discussion (mostly amongst fans) as to which player Rutherford might go after in a trade. No one ever discusses, or suggests, which current Penguins player another team might want to scoop up. Do you know of anyone on the current roster that other teams are actively pursuing?
Jason Mackey
1:43
No. And that's sort of the problem right now. Either guys are unavailable or not exactly a hot commodity.

The Penguins have to be in arguably the best position at the deadline. As they continue to dominate, what are things right now in their style of play they could improve on as they work their way into the playoffs?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Continue to play well on the road as they did in STL and CBJ. Good against the division. Continue strong third periods. Get the PP back with Hornqvist back. Consistency. Win four-point games.

How much is to much in terms of time and money concerning the resigning of Patric Hornqvist?
Jason Mackey
1:45
I'd be comfortable going four years at about $6 million per season. Anything more than that would scare me.

There seem to be little groups of players that hang out together.  Now that MAF has moved on do you have any idea who Sidney spends most of his time with outside of the rink?  As an outsider he seems enigmatic- a superstar without fiance/wife and family.
Jason Mackey
1:46
That would be wrong. Not going to comment on Sid's personal life here, but you're wrong. ... Sid actually hangs out with a wide variety. Olli sometimes, oddly. Sheahan. Letang. He's kind of all-around. I wouldn't say he has one consistent best bud or something like that. Most don't function they like. They have wives, girlfriends and families.

If Mike Lange was the commentator in a video game, do you think you'd ever stop playing it?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Better question: I would start playing video games if I could have Mikey call it.

If the right deal presented itself, do you think GM JP would trade Maatta?
Jason Mackey
1:47
No way. They're thrilled with what Maatta is doing this season. As they should be.

What do you see as the biggest area of concern that the team needs to work on as we head towards the end of the season and get ready for the playoffs? Thanks for your time.
Jason Mackey
1:47
Fourth-line center depth. If Carter Rowney gets hurt, what happens then? That's what worries me. Everything else is fine.

1:47
Jason,
At this point in the season who would you give the team MVP to?
Jason Mackey
1:48
I'd go Malkin. He's made a late charge past Kessel. He's been so, so good since the start of this year. He's on another planet right now. Actually writing about this for tomorrow.
Matt
1:48
Is it someone like Matt Cullen they'll target?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Yes. A fourth-line center who would come cheap, could move up if there's an injury and add some depth to the position.

1:48
Which player on the current roster would be the most fun to sit down and have a beer with?
Jason Mackey
1:49
Hint: He's a two-time Stanley Cup champion.
AT
1:49
I know you are probably getting a ton of deadline questions but, any new news on that front?
Jason Mackey
1:49
As opposed to old news? They're in the mix, looking at stuff. Nothing firm to report at this point.

Do all of the players eat the same pregame meal before every game? What does the typical pregame meal consist of? I imagine a lot of pasta.
Jason Mackey
1:50
Usually they eat lunch after morning skate at the rink. Most eat the same stuff, although there are some exceptions. ... A lot of pasta, yes. A chicken or fish. Usually not red meat.

In your career, what has been the hardest question you've ever asked in an interview?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Can't pin down anything specific, but it wouldn't be to a hockey player. Likely a parent who's kid isn't doing so well. The Matt Murray thing in Dallas comes to mind. I think a lot of times those of us on both sides -- reporters and players -- forget that this is a damn game. It's supposed to be fun. It's not war. It's not famine. It's not disease or poverty. It's a game. Just be human. Doesn't always happen.

Quite often at my workplace co-workers bring in boxes of doughnuts.  Would you eat a doughnut?  What kind? What about Starkey?  Does he eat doughnuts?
Jason Mackey
1:52
What kind of weirdo wouldn't eat a donut? Oh, wait. Probably Starkey.

1:52
What would be your entrance song as you walked to home plate?
Jason Mackey
1:53
In Post-Gazette Brian Batko gave me Jason Isbell's "Hope the High Road." I dig that. If not Isbell, then obviously Grateful Dead.

With the trade deadline on Monday, what moves, if any, do you see the Pens making? Brassard has no chance of coming here I feel, but boy, would Grabner look nice in a Pens uniform. I don't think Letestu is much of an upgrade. Would rather get Cullen. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey
1:54
With you, Kevin. I think Brassard costs too much. Cap hit is problematic. ... Better shot of Grabner, but he doesn't upgrade the fourth-line center spot. I actually think Cullen is the best option, with Letestu (or a similar player) next.
