Jason, this year's Pens have provided us with some choice nuggs in terms of shooting and pass selection. I've been pleased with their stamina in the face of what must be exhaustion. I think that at times the coaching has been trippy, but the effort from this team has been far out and majorly groovy. I often compare this team to the Dead (like you probably do) and this season the song Uncle John's Band I think best sums up the season to this point. Thoughts?   Thanks for the great work, JM!

I'm not sure I understand the point you're making, but you included a Grateful Dead reference so I'm cool with it.

What sites are you gonna try to see while in Historical Boston?   Fenway Park, Franklin's Home, Liberty Bell, etc.  Enjoy the trip!
Jason Mackey

I took a tour of Fenway the other day. It was incredible. This afternoon I'm (hopefully) taking a tour of my hotel room bed.

Was happy for Reaves that he got traded.  He never really got a chance here and seems like a good guy that deserved better.
Jason Mackey
1:23
Agree with that. Never understood why they didn't find a larger role for him.

Jason, you've revealed in here a few times that you love drinking coffee while writing your articles. What is the best coffee place you've ever gone to?
Jason Mackey
1:24
Fancy: Kofe in Vancouver, actually with Olli Maatta. Every day: I'm a Timmy's diehard.

Any good restaurants you can recommend in Philadelphia?
Jason Mackey

They have good restaurants in Philadelphia?

Love the Brasard deal and how GMJR goes all in, but didn't they need to upgrade the defenceman more?  They seem really vulnerable without Cole
Jason Mackey
1:24
I think we need to wait and see on Hunwick. If he's playing the left side, I'm much more OK with it than if he was playing the right. It's too soon to make any sort of snap judgements with him and Oleksiak.

Don't the Penguins look a lot like the Steelers now -- all offense and no defense?   I don't understand how Rutherford thinks that's a recipe for success in the playoffs.   It's defense that wins championships, especially since the officials tend not to call many penalties in the playoffs.
Jason Mackey
1:25
We're talking about two games, Ron. Without their No. 1 goalie. I think their defense will be just fine. They've gotten a little loose with how they do things. I don't think it's a gigantic cause for concern at this point.

Were you at the Monday practice and did you notice what might of caused ZARs injury?
Jason Mackey
1:26
I was, but I haven't a clue. He might've been trying to battle through it. We don't know for sure that it happened Monday.

Jason, if the Pens can get back to rolling 4 lines (instead of 3, playing catch up) IMO they can not play both 37 & 34 on the wings. I Kno it's a PK thing but why has Sully gone away from 4 lines that can score? When 62,15,59,17 are all capable PK guys?
Jason Mackey
1:26
True. But who takes draws, No. 1? Also, you may disagree, but Sully wants a right-handed faceoff option. There's Rowney. I agree that they need more offense from the fourth line, but there are only so many options.

Do you think a couple games off will help sheary find his groove?
Jason Mackey
1:27
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised they haven't gone the healthy scratch route. He's responded well to it in the past.

Is this a big game for the pens just to see how they stack up against another cup favorite?
Jason Mackey
1:27
It's a big game for the Pens because they need to snap a two-game losing streak and start playing better before this snowballs. It only happens to be against a really good team.

Regarding injury reports, is the ambiguity of them something the player’s union wanted? If so, why? When it’s reported that ZAR is out with an “upper body injury,’ why are there never specifics like in other sports?
Jason Mackey
1:28
Nobody around the NHL feels a need for actual information. From Bettman on down. That includes the NHLPA. It's a shame. And stupid. They think it leads to targeting.

How come Mario never grants media interviews? Have you ever attempted to talk with him?
Jason Mackey
1:28
I have. They have all been denied. He likes to stay out of the spotlight. That's the explanation I've gotten. Although he has spoken for things such as the Kevin Stevens special on Sportsnet.

More bad PR for a Steeler regarding social media use. We never hear this from the Pens. Do the powers-at-be discourage players from acting up in that way, or is there a policy governing use among players?
Jason Mackey
1:29
It's just different in hockey culture. They barely use it. And when they do, it's never bad. ... I think they talk to the guys, but hockey players and football players are just different types of people. That's not a racist comment, either. Please don't take it that way. There's just more of a fall-in-line mindset with hockey players.

So hornqvists extension what does that mean for Bryan rust can we resign him he’s by far the most versatile winger?
Jason Mackey
1:30
He's an RFA. He'll be back. When it comes time for a long-term extension, they'll do that, too. They love him.

What is the GREATEST HOCKEY MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
Jason Mackey
1:31
Most everyone would say Slapshot. I'm going Mighty Ducks. I'm sure I'll get crushed, but I don't care. I love 'em. Honorable mention: Miracle and Mystery Alaska.

Mackey, do you hope to spend the rest of your career at the Post Gazette?   Also, who is the sports editor there now?  Did Sanserino leave?
Jason Mackey
1:32
Sanserino did leave. It's Tyler Batiste. To answer the first part: Yes. I've hopped around a little. I'm done with that crap. I'm from Pittsburgh, which means I'm not trying to get anywhere else. The P-G is so, so good to us, and I'm proud to be part of what we're building. You're stuck with me, assuming they don't toss me out on the street.

Hi Jason. New Penguins fan here in the UK (been a Steelers fan for years), and have a couple of newbie questions if i may - 1. Reading all the NHL trade talks it seems to me as if draft picks are not seen as valuable as in the NFL -is that true? If so, why is that? 2. Why are so many games late evening? Not great for us here but also even in the US? thanks!
Jason Mackey
1:33
Hockey's an evening sport. Don't know why. Just always been that way. ... Hockey players come from all sorts of feeder systems -- junior, overseas and NCAA. First-round picks panning out is less certain in the NHL and NFL. I think that's why you see more first-round picks moved.

Sorry Jason another one! How close were we to getting Graubner (?) from the Rangers? He looked very good and dangerous the other night... Ta
Jason Mackey
1:33
They tried. Rangers wanted a defensive prospect that we didn't have. So, again, close in the sense that we wanted him. But never serious enough because of the assets involved.
