Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 3.15.18

Hi, folks. It's chat time. Live from the Panera Bread in the Waterfront. Away we go ...

Do you know why Sheary was demoted yesterday?
Jason Mackey
2:06
Sheary isn't a great defensive player, and Sullivan wasn't happy with how the Penguins were defending. One could presume that involved Sheary.
HB
2:06
Follow up that kunhncal sheanan rowney line was actually looking good yesterday don’t know why they changed it
Jason Mackey
2:06
Sullivan wanted to get Sheahan more minutes. And more prominent minutes.
HB
2:06
After the 3rd period last night do you think hunwick finds a way to slither back into the lineup?
Jason Mackey
2:06
Potentially. But I don't think it will offer any improvement. It would be more for Sully to shake things up than anything.
HB
2:06
Did you ask malkin about his penalty shot from watching on the tv it looked very lackadaisical?
Jason Mackey
2:07
He wasn't available to the media afterward.
HB
2:07
I really want bassard kessel to work but do you think at any point they pull the plug and put sheanan with kessel since they looked great before the trade?
Jason Mackey
2:07
They could try, but where do you put Brassard? On the wing? I think they're a better team with him at center, honestly.
HB
2:07
So who’s do you think Pittsburgh’s inside the glass celebrity is? Snoop? Micheal Keaton? Gerrit Cole and his beer?
Jason Mackey
2:07
Keaton would be great. Cole isn't from here. California and plays in Houston. Snoop? C'mon.

Hi! Who do u think pittsburgh matchup the best against, VS Devils or philly?
Jason Mackey
2:08
Philly, easily. I don't think the Flyers are that good. New Jersey is. Devils will be a tough out for a lot of teams, not just the Penguins.
Bill
2:08
Best first round matchup for the Pens?   I say Flyers.   What say you?
Jason Mackey
2:09
Agreed. Or even the Caps, crazy as that sounds. Definitely a psychological advantage there. Even Columbus is pretty decent. Of course, that may be biased because of logistics and how much I love Columbus as a city.
Kevin
2:09
Realistically, this team isn't going far with this defense unless Murray stands on his head.   Maybe a round or two, tops, since the Metro Division is wide open.   But you'd have to say the Atlantic Division survivor is the heavy favorite to come out of the East, right?
Jason Mackey
2:10
I think Tampa is the favorite regardless. I do think the defense is good enough to win it. They did last year, without Letang. Letang has been better lately. Their defense is fine. And don't fall into the trap of pinning last night on the six blueliners; there's way more to it than that. Forwards are guilty, too.
Don

If Letang was a dog on a chain inside his own blue line, how long would it take him before he breaks free and wanders into the other blue line end?
Jason Mackey
2:10
So if you had Kris Letang on your team, you would want him to play like Rob Scuderi?

With the Hornqvist deal, who do you think becomes a casualty in terms of there not being money to keep them with the Penguins.
Jason Mackey
2:12
I don't think anyone, Chad, to be perfectly honest with you. They don't have any UFAs anymore. Restricted guys are easier. I do think they might explore trying to move Hunwick in the offseason. Guessing he wouldn't mind going somewhere where he could play and probably be a better fit, too.

Hey Jason, I ran into you in an elevator at the ACC, was wearing the Rimouski jersey and made the comment that you're taller in person. You came off as a very nice guy and just wanted to say I enjoy your work and these chats!
Jason Mackey
2:12
Thanks, Kevin! I remember. And it was a pleasure meeting you. Hope you enjoyed the game.

Also a question, out of all the penguins game that you've covered was the most exciting to be at/had the best energy? Doesn't have to be restricted just to games at PPG Paints either.
Jason Mackey

Bell Centre in Montreal. And it's not close. It's the coolest atmosphere I've experienced. Like being in a museum, but it's alive. ... We're excluding Stanley Cup finals, I'm assuming? If not, Nashville Game 6.

Is there any sense of concern about the Penguins lack of defensive depth?  I heard GMJR express come confidence in some Wilkesbarre guys but haven’t seen any of them
Jason Mackey
2:14
Yeah, Jim has talked about Tinordi, Summers, Corrado (if healthy), Trotman and maybe a few others. I'm not so sure. I won't pretend to know more than Jim, or his people who watch these guys every single day, but I've been underwhelmed with most of them at the NHL level.

Jason, I know Sheary scored a cpl goals the other night but watching him these last 2 months has been tough. He has no confidence and falls down non stop. The strangest part of him is how bad his stick handling is, it's like he lost his skills???  I Kno there are not many options but don't u think sitting him down for a week or 2 would help or does he need to play thru this?
Jason Mackey
2:15
I don't, honestly. What good is it going to do? Make him bigger? He is what he is at this point. I think the key here is to put him in situations to succeed, to find the right matchups for him. That's with Crosby, plain and simple. Nothing else works. You need Sid to help him along. Maybe you explore a move in the offseason, if he has numbers, but I don't see what sitting him would help. His problems will still exist.

come up.  Aside from Hunwick and Bengtsson (who is still concussed?) how are they shorIng up their back end?
Jason Mackey
2:16
Believe I answered this one below. To reiterate, though, if they have more than one injury on the back end, I think the Penguins could be in some trouble.

Backup goalies have undoubtedly shown a lot of promise. However I find it Difficult to root for Casey DeSmith considering his sketchy past of assaulting his girlfriend at UNH (drunkenly spitting in her face while straddling her).  Is that a story that will ever be brought up or will it be pushed under the rug?
Jason Mackey
2:18
I'm not an expert on why Casey was in the news for this sort of thing, but I believe the charges were dropped, no? Not defending anything. Saying seriously, I believe they were dropped. Tough for us to serve as the law and convict him in our line of questioning when the U.S. court system did not.

When do you expect matt murray to return to the lineup
Jason Mackey
2:18
Assuming he comes back to practice Saturday, I think Tuesday is reasonable.

What happened with Conor Sheary last night. What was the reason he was sitting towards the end of the game?
Jason Mackey
2:19
Sully wanted better defense. Wasn't getting it, and I don't think HCMS was enthralled with that aspect of Sheary's game. It's not exactly his forte.
Chuck J.

Is the leadership strong enough on this team, to over come this lack of focus, or over confidence, attention to detail to make it to the cup finals
