Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 6.8.17

Jason Mackey
12:52
OK, folks. Let's get this thing rolling, shall we?

12:52
Is tonight it for the Penguins? My fear is that if they lose tonight, no way they get out of NSH with a win in game 6
Jason Mackey
12:53
I think this is a very, very important game. I don't like "must win" until an elimination game, but yes, going to Nashville -- where it will be nuts -- facing a 3-2 deficit, having lost three in a row isn't ideal.
Malkin
12:53
Why is the knock on Malkin that he is lazy?
Jason Mackey
12:53
I don't get that. Never have. Undisciplined at times? Yes. I'll go there. But I don't see lazy.

I understand the Pens lost their best skater and puck handler on defense when they lost Letang. However, on paper, the defense is supposedly all about mobility. It was the rationale for bringing in guys like Daley and Schultz as opposed to the bigger yet slower, stay-at-home types. So why suddenly can't the D skate/pass the puck away from D zone pressure? Injuries? Fatique? Other team's game plan?
Jason Mackey
12:55
Probably a little bit of everything, but you make a fine point. I think you also need to take into consideration that Ron Hainsey simply isn't a top-pairing defenseman, and he's being asked to play top-pairing minutes against top-pairing competition; it's only going to be OK for so long. Hainsey's only one, but there's a reason Stanley Cup winners have unquestioned No. 1 guys. There's a trickle-down effect.

Hey Jason, in one of your chats many months ago a reader accused you of being a hippie and you told him that you don't drink or use drugs. But then last week you tweeted a pic of a BBQ meal you were eating in Nashville and you had a beer on your plate. What gives? Who is the real Jason Mackey?
Jason Mackey
12:55
I don't do drugs. Never have. I have drank beer. And I do.

12:56
Is it just me or HAVE the refs completely lost control over this series? Fighting and cheap shot are through the roof and the officials are ignoring it. Also, do the same refs do every game in the FINALS?
Jason Mackey
12:56
This would hardly be the only time the refs have been below what you would expect. And yes, I believe they do.

Are the Penguins not being aggressive enough when they have POWER PLAY advantage? It seems that they should be getting more shots than they are
Jason Mackey
12:56
Mike Sullivan and others would agree with you. They definitely need to shoot more.

Why is PK Subban such a punk out there? That guy is an instigator and not a good role model for young players.
Jason Mackey
12:57
I very much disagree. I like P.K. Subban's game, and I like his personality. Hockey needs more characters. He's hardly the only guy playing on a physical edge, either.
penalty anyone?
12:57
are the crowds in Nashville as nucking futs as they seem on tv? That place looks wild. And why aren't the Preds punished for the constant interuptions of fish thrown on the ice?
Jason Mackey
12:58
They get them off the ice quickly, and it really isn't that much. But, yes. The crowds and excitement over hockey down there obliterated every expectation I had

Mackey I saw that picture you tweeted out where you got to meet Nicole Kidman. Was she nice in person?
Jason Mackey
12:58
You must be confusing me with Sam Werner.

I KNOW I KNOW this is the Finals, but as a fun note, did you see where Thad Matta recited lyrics from Truckin' at his farewell Press Conference at OH ST? Pretty cool.
Jason Mackey
12:58
I didn't. Link?

Rooting hard, but the Preds have just been the quicker team imposing their will against the Pens D, who have looked really bad in this series. Unless they get lucky, I don't see the Pens pulling off two wins. Thoughts? You agree?
Jason Mackey
12:59
I think the Penguins will be fine. They need to re-calibrate, win tonight and go from there. The Penguins have significantly more skill. They made some adjustments from Game 3 to 4, and the puck simply didn't go in the net in Game 4.

Last game Rinne was just in the zone. Is there any other explanation for the Pens inability to score more than one goal? Honestly, I think sometimes in hockey you just have to acknowledge that a goalkeeper is on fire and he's gonna win the game for his team. Some folks say that the ice was doctored. Some folks say that Fisher had gel on his stick. But honestly i think that is all BS. I think that basically Rinne was way too hot last game and he couldn't be beat. But not in PGH not TONIGHT. Murray will have his revenge tonight. Thoughts?
Jason Mackey

Very much agree with you. Rinne was incredible. Tip your cap and move on. The other team gets paid, too.

i know Hornqvist is hurt, and that Crosby doesn't like playing with him, but if Sullivan is going to play him, he needs to play him on the first line, and not Sheary. He's ineffective on any other line, and he may make some room in front of the crease for Sid and Guentzel. Sullivan's line combos have been maddening. Rust doesn't play well with Sid for example, and yet he plays hm there. Does Sullivan just say "I need balance" and forgets about analytics or the eye test? Has anyone asked him what he's thinking?
Jason Mackey
1:01
Sure, we've asked him what he thinks; his answers aren't always what fans want to hear, so they get mad. He has his reasons. And he's not always right. But the guy is two wins away from a second consecutive Stanley Cup right. I'm pretty sure he knows something about what he's doing. Hornqvist could be with Kunitz and Cullen tonight. I happen to like that line a lot. I don't disagree with taking another whack at Sid and the Kids.

I don't understand why Hainsey is still playing on the top line with Dumo. Do you? He's been a dumpster fire and turnover machine and can't get the puck out the Pens' end to save his life. The Pens need someone quicker. Why not play Ruh, or at least drop Hainsey to the third pairing if you must play him. Is this perplexing to you too?
Jason Mackey
1:02
It is. He has not been very good. But I'm also not a huge fan turning to someone who has played hardly at all over the past two months in Ruhwedel. Playing Hainsey less, sure, but who do you play more who has been good?

I have read and heard many Murray fans suggest it is absurd to even consider a goalie switch. I think an argument can be made for either MAF or MM starting. Do you agree?
Jason Mackey
1:03
I agree. But the only opinion that matters is Mike Sullivan's, and he's a Murray guy. If we think any other way, it's a total waste of time.

What is your prediction for tonight's game?
Jason Mackey
1:03
Penguins, 4-1.
Dwayne PghGuy

Dave Molinari's chat session only lasted 30 minutes and was extremely boring. Could you please ask him to type faster and post shorter answers next time?
Jason Mackey
1:04
It's not my business to tell Dave how to do his chat. That's his right. I'm sure there are some that don't like mine with shorter answers and some off-beat stuff.

Who is your favorite current Pittsburgh Penguin? All time favorite?
Jason Mackey
1:05
I'm not a Penguins fan, believe it or not. But I have a tremendous amount of respect for Sidney Crosby, Matt Cullen and Marc-Andre Fleury as people. They're as good of humans as you'd ever want to meet. Has nothing to do with hockey.
Jeff M

How much of a factor, if any, do you think fatigue is playing? Pens just don't seem to have the same jump from earlier in the playoffs. Do you think the cumulative effect of the last two playoff runs is catching up to them?
Jason Mackey
1:05
I don
1:06
I don't buy it. They've played more than 200 games the past two years. They're not milk. It's not like, on Game 203, they get tired. It's a lot about execution. Nashville gets paid to try and win, too. Sometimes you have bad days. Sometimes the adjustments don't worry. And sometimes the puck simply doesn't go in.
