Don't disagree. Worry about the money.
John Strange
2:11
The term replacing years reminds me of football personnel and analysts starting to use the term for receivers getting "separation." Remember when it was just called getting open?
Jason Mackey
2:12
I see where you're going with that. Fair.
Mike
2:12
Hey, Scott Hartnell was just bought out. Can you see him fitting in on the 4th line? His game still has bite.
Jason Mackey
2:12
You mean when he's not a healthy scratch? Heck no. Sullivan's system would be the moon to Hartnell.
John Strange
2:12
I also don't like the term "special" to describe a great player. It sounds infantile.
Jason Mackey
2:12
I'll try to watch myself, John.

I've heard Hanzal and Dominic Moore as possible targets at C. Thoughts on either?
Jason Mackey
2:14
I don't like the age or fit, especially with Moore. They need some additional offense from that spot, and I really don't see it coming from Moore. I could be swayed on Hanzal. If, of course, you could get him cheap, which I don't think is going to happen.

What percent would you give 0-100% for Sprong and/or Aston-Reese of making the opening night lineup.
Jason Mackey
2:14
Sprong 70 percent, ZAR 0. I think he starts in Wilkes. Nothing against him. He just needs a little more time.
Jamie
2:15
Who are some backup goalie options?
Jason Mackey
2:16
Would imagine Anders Nilsson could be one. I also really like Brian Elliott, if the money could work.
Tobs
2:16
What's your gut instinct on Sprong? His numbers are impressive but it seems like he was a little old for the QMJHL last year. Do you think he has top 6 potential or are they better off trading him?
Jason Mackey
2:16
He has top-six potential. I would not trade him. I would not even think about trading him.
Scooter
2:16
any chance the Pens could be looking at  David Desharnais or Cody Franson?
Jason Mackey
2:16
I'm sure there's a chance.
Do I think it's a good one? No.
Matt

If there are no takers for Hagelin, considering the production drop during the season, is buyout a possibility? I know there is still some cap hit, but not 100% on buyout rules.
Jason Mackey
2:17
No, they're not considering a buyout of Hagelin. I think they believe there's more there, and that the injury was a big reason he didn't produce. Accurate? Maybe a stretch. But I do think Hagelin is much better than what he showed this past seasson.

Do you think the Pens will be constructed to make a run at a three-peat? Seems they'll be a bit weaker next year.
Jason Mackey
2:25
I think so. I think they're going to lose a few UFAs, but I don't think it should be too much of a cause for concern. They have talent coming up, Letang coming back ... no reason to say no, in my opinion.
Doc Emrick
2:26
Any chance Jeff Jimerson lets me sing national anthem at a future Pens game?
Jason Mackey
2:26
Zero.
Mike
2:26
We can't afford to lose kunitz, bonino, and Daley these guys just won back to back cups. Also I don't trade maata and sheary and draft pick for such bag. Sign these guys and bring guys up from the farm and win 3 cups. Get Cullen to take vet minimum.
Jason Mackey
2:26
They couldn't sign all four contracts you mentioned given the market value for these guys and make it under the salary cap. Not when you also factor in their RFAs.
Normie
2:27
I take it the Pens are doing some due diligence looking in the college ranks for free agents, especially for bottom six guys.  I'd much rather see a 22 year old who played top tier college hockey than an 18 year old who played junior.
Jason Mackey
2:27
The Penguins want to find quality players wherever, but they do find value in that part of the market. That much is pretty easy to see.
Mike
2:27
Jason I'm so disappointed you missed the "bite" joke about Hartnell I'm never coming to your chats again
Jason Mackey
2:27
Your loss, Mike.
John
2:27
You seem to be very high on sprong's chances. Do they think he can play LW. Because RW is extremely crowded, especially now that they've decided to force reaves into the line up
Jason Mackey
2:28
Yeah, that's the issue for now. I've always liked him on the right side. I don't want to say he can't, but I've always seen him better on the right. Hopefully for them that changes. Only games will tell us that, though.
Dan
2:28
Thoughts on Frank Corrado or Ethan Prow getting NHL minutes ?
Jason Mackey
2:29
Means several injuries, I can tell you that. Worries me a little; however, I also think Sergei Gonchar is really good at what he does. Third, I haven't watched enough of those guys to feel completely comfortable making a prediction like that.
Jaromir Jagr
2:29
Am I coming back for a year or two, then retire my jersey there? You got Recchi and Stevens there already so...
Jason Mackey
2:29
I really hope so, Jags.
Pope
2:29
OK, a lot of moving parts and speculation this week, but what is your best guess with regard to bringing back any UFAs or signing another C and D from outside the organization.
Jason Mackey
2:29
I don't think they're going to be able to bring back any of their UFAs, honestly. I think they'll trade for a center and sign a defenseman on July 1.
Jill
2:30
I think the Pens will be a bit weaker next year with the likely departures of several people. Thoughts?
