Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 6.7.18

I don't know if Conor Sheary ever calls Mike Sullivan Uncle Mike. I doubt, if he does, it occurs at work. I do think Sullivan is very serious most times. They probably joke with him some but not a ton. From what we see, it's not really like that much, the team culture.

Mackey: If you're ever at Kennywood, would you ride the Phantom's Revenge or the Thunderbolt?  Maybe you, Starkey, and Mueller may end up doing a show from Kennywood at some point and have to ride the rollercoasters.
Jason Mackey
2:24
I would love to do a show with Starkey and Mueller from Kennywood and ride rollercoasters with those two, especially Joe. Would worry about Mueller hitting his head on something, though, and Joe would probably have to bring his pee jug on the rides. That would be awkward.

In your opinion, which players do you think will not be on the Penguins roster for the upcoming season?
Jason Mackey
2:25
Somebody on this list won't be: Sheary, Hunwick, Kessel, Hagelin or Jarry.

Are there’s any other name so rumored to connected to the pens?
Jason Mackey
2:26
Yes, but I'm not telling. (Kidding. If there was another name, you would have read it before now, believe me.)

Any thoughts on who the Pens may draft?
Jason Mackey
2:27
I think they'll get a defenseman. They pick so late that it's tough to say who that might be.

Hey Jason, thanks for the chat.   I never saw Jake G. developing to the level he is at now, especially playoff Jake.  Is there anyone you can think of that might also be a surprise at some point in the organization?
Jason Mackey
2:27
I wonder sometimes about J.S. Dea. Given an opportunity, I think his skating and smarts might surprise some people. Good question, by the way, but i think he might surprise some people; I think there's more there.

why are you late to the chat?
Jason Mackey

Went to lunch with one of our interns, who had to tidy up a few things before we could leave.

pens ne vet backup netminder who might it be
Jason Mackey

I don't know what you're asking, but I think Casey DeSmith is going to be their backup goaltender next season.

Why has the Pittsburgh media attempted to run Kessell out of town?
Jason Mackey
2:29
They haven't done that. At least I know I haven't, and I'm not going to sit here and comment on what other reporters have or haven't done. Same as I've reported all along, Jim is going to listen on Kessel. If he gets something really good, he might do something. But he doesn't feel like he has to.

Do you think Kessel is so unhappy that he would welcome a trade?
Jason Mackey
2:30
Not at all. I think he likes it here. I also think he'd rather play with Malkin. I don't know if that will happen, just like I don't think a trade is even close to imminent. Phil, Sullivan, Pittsburgh ... it's not at all irreparable, if that's what you're asking.

Vegas appears overmatched on their defense.  They obviously fared much better in their other series.  Presumably, this is a poor match up for them.  Do you agree and did you think that going into the series?  If so, why do you think other teams couldn't expose the way the Caps are?
Jason Mackey
2:31
I agree, and I think a big issue is Vegas' own puck management. Like the Penguins, they're giving up entirely too much odd-man rushes. Just not sustainable. They've also had their top line go quiet. That can't happen. And they're allowing open season on Fleury.

Do you think the report about Simon playing in Russia next year is true?  That would be ok with me.
Jason Mackey
2:32
I wouldn't read too much into that, sorry. Everything I've heard, he's going to come back. Sorry for the crap news.

Jason...the metro?    I can't believe you are making light of your vow to listen to Train. C'mon, man!   I've listened to like a dozen Dead shows cuz you raved about them.    Bummed out, man.
Jason Mackey

Again, sorry to disappoint.

What do the Pens do with Jarry this year. Full time role w WBS? 25-30 games as a backup to Murray? Or trade?
Jason Mackey
2:33
Trade makes the most sense to me. I don't see what Jarry has to gain by backing up in WBS. I think DeSmith is a better backup, while Jarry would probably make the better starter. He would have suitors. I think you look into trading him.

Is there part of you, like me, that looks past the great story thats Vegas and thinks the NHL should never have made it possible for an expansion team to make the Finals?  Does it feel cheap, in some way?
Jason Mackey
2:33
If I told you after the expansion draft THAT team would make the finals, would you have believed me? C'mon. We all thought they would stink. Best case, they might make the playoffs. The NHL didn't fix this. I hate that narrative. And it's moot anyway. With Seattle, they're going to get the same exact thing. As they should.

I keep hearing that ZAR will be able to be a physical player for the Pens.  I have not seen any physical play from him this past season.  Will he suddenly become physical force in 2018-2019?
Jason Mackey
2:34
The Penguins are hoping so, but your concern is absolutely legit. He has disappeared a lot. That comes with his age and experience, but he needs to be more physical more consistently. You aren't the only one who thinks that.

How is Olli Maatta doing? Do you know if he made it back home to Finland?
Jason Mackey
2:34
He did, and he is fine. Requisite question about his military service: We don't yet know, but it's not anticipated to happen soon.

This might have been asked before, just joining, but do you believe the rumors that the Pens are interested in Tavares? What would that take?
Jason Mackey
2:35
More than they have, to be honest. And I don't think Tavares would want to come here. But I do think the Penguins will have maybe some preliminary talks about it. More in the name of due diligence than anything else.

I was wondering if in your last 20 comments article if you were alluding to the Pens maybe trying to either trade to get Daley back or that they would resign Kunitz?
Jason Mackey
2:36
Daley is interesting. If Detroit took back money -- which it might -- that could make sense. But there's significant risk there given his age and injury history. ... As far as Kunitz, yeah, I think that's a very real possibility. If, of course, doesn't pay him more to stay. Which it might.

Hey Jason, hope all is well! Just wondering, during your tenure as a hockey writer, who is the best interview leaguewide in your opinion?
