Was there any thought to Bill Guerin being an assistant coach?
Jason Mackey
1:01
None whatsoever. He's potentially Jim Rutherford successor. He's not a coach.
Matt Duchene
1:01
How come you won't sign me?
Jason Mackey
1:01
You make too much money, Matt. Sorry.
Chris Kunitz

I changed my mind, I want to come back and play with the Pens. We can totally three-peat!!
Jason Mackey
1:02
Too late, Chris.

How long before Sully kicks Kessel to the curb?
Jason Mackey
1:04
I wouldn't phrase it like that, but if you're asking when the Penguins might explore trading Kessel, my answer would be not before after next season. Think about it: Kessel scored 23 goals last season. Believe that's the second-lowest single-season mark of his career. So, you're trading an asset when its value is low. Plus, Daniel Sprong and Zach Aston-Reese probably need at least a half-season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The scenario that makes the most sense is for the Penguins to let those guys develop -- they could always have their hand forced by Sprong or Aston-Reese -- then have Kessel produce a gaudy goal total, and you see what the market is for him next summer.

As the roster stands, who do you see on the #1 PP?
Jason Mackey
1:04
I think Letang deserves the right to be out there to start. I'd go Letang, Crosby, Malkin, Kessel and Hornqvist. However, if the unit struggles, I would not be shy about replacing Letang with Schultz and Hornqvist with Guentzel.

How much do you think sheary will get and i saw numbers where sheary would make more than dumoulin which is ridiculous because we need dumoulin but we dont need sheary.
Jason Mackey
1:06
How much a team needs a player does not factor into his arbitration number. Production and contributions to the team does. ... I don't think Dumoulin will make more than Sheary. I think Dumoulin will get around $3.5 million, Sheary $2.5, and I don't have any problem with either of those numbers.
Jason Mackey

Did the chat start yet?
Jason Mackey
1:06
It did. You're late.

Do you think trading Sheary is on the table once his arb case is settled? Thanks J-Bone.
Jason Mackey
1:06
Yes, to make a deal, I think the Penguins would listen. I don't think they're shopping Sheary, mind you, but I would not call him untouchable the way I would someone like Guentzel.

Hi Jason!
Jason Mackey
1:07
Hi Ray. How's the South Side? Was lunch good?

Jason, any idea on who will propel into Recchi's former spot as the player development coach?
Jason Mackey
1:08
Good question. Talked to Rutherford about this yesterday. He said interviews will kick into full gear next week. Hard to handicap because GMJR needs to know his candidate pool. I don't think it will be Matt Cullen, I'll say that. I think Pascal Dupuis would be a possibility, if he's interested; I don't know that he is. Outside of those guys, I think they may look to fill it externally.

Been wanting to know answer to 2 questions about Game 6 winning goal. Did Shultz deliberately shoot wide and why did they rule no goalie interference?
Jason Mackey
1:08
I do think Schultz meant to do what he did. As for goalie interference, I've watched, and I don't see that. What are you referring to specifically that makes you say that?

What are Pouliets flaws? Decision making? Lack of awareness? Basic hockey IQ?
Jason Mackey
1:17
Yes, yes and yes. They are not physical, by any stretch. In Derrick's defense, I'll say this: Mike Sullivan's system is not easy. Defensemen are asked to do a lot. And quickly. That said, it's the decision-making and thinking the game that has lagged behind with Pouliot.

do you think the longer we wait for rutherford to make a trade for a 3rd line center the more potential that its a block buster move
Jason Mackey
1:21
No. I don't think the wait will translate to the size of the move. The Penguins have a certain amount they can spend, and that's that. I think GMJR's waiting for a few things to happen away from his own organization -- like teams that are over the cap and whether they're going to keep or trade guys -- and that will likely impact the trade more than anything.

1:22
Why bother giving Pouliot another contract?  Are they trying to pump up his trade value?
Jason Mackey
1:22
Could be. But I also think the organization has convinced itself, right or wrong, that there's a hockey player in there somewhere. You certainly can't question Pouliot's physical ability. He has all the tools. If they can get through to him mentally, they could have something special.

Do you see the pens targeting anymore college UFAs? Specifically Will Butcher in August?
Jason Mackey
1:23
I wouldn't say no, at this point. Especially after their last undrafted UFA signing. The Penguins track all of them. They do it well. It's of interest to them. They'll be monitoring, I'm sure.

What do you think of recent signing Adam Johnson, and do you think he has any real NHL potential?
Jason Mackey
1:24
I like it. It addresses a need. Not going to offer an opinion on NHL potential, however, as I've never seen him play in person, other than development camp. Wouldn't be fair.

is Daniel Sprong eligible for rookie of the year since he played a couple games his first year.
Jason Mackey
1:25
Yes.

Jason, I just heard Rutherford say he is looking for a center in the 2 million dollar range do u think he is bluffing or maybe he will sign multiple players
Jason Mackey
1:26
Heard that. I think it's strategic. Unless he legitimately expects Dumoulin and Sheary to get $6 apiece in arbitration or something. They can afford more than $2 million for that position, and I believe they'll spend more there.

Lunch was super...just a little heartburn. It looks like next year's team is going to be weaker with some of the departures. How do you see the team playing out next year record-wise. Three-peat seems a bit of a tall order.
Jason Mackey
1:27
I don't think so. Honestly, I don't see anyone else in the Eastern Conference that's intimidating, other than maybe Tampa. And even then, I have some questions. I think they'll be in the mix to win the Metro, probably the favorites and snag one of the top seeds. But honestly, the regular season is meaningless around here. You know that.

Do you think that someone like Sheary would help bring back a center? And do you think GMJR is waiting to go bargain wing shopping, perhaps for someone like Vanek?
Jason Mackey
1:28
I don't see them having any use for someone like Vanek. ... Sheary would have to be packaged with someone. I don't think he could net what they're looking for by himself.
