When free agency started, GMJR said he was close to making a deal for a 3rd line center.  Who do you think he was talking about?
Jason Mackey
1:28
I'm not sure. I believe he said he was engaged with talks. I don't ever remember saying he was close to making a deal. I remember the title of an article saying he was close to making a deal.

I do believe we have a lot of cap room to sign an elite player any thoughts
Jason Mackey
1:29
Sure. I think they can allocate around $4 million to their 3C position. That's plenty of room to get an elite player.

What does Derrick Pouliot need to do to translate his AHL success to the NHL?
Jason Mackey
1:29
Thinking. ... Well. Pouliot has all the physical gifts in the world. He needs to make smarter, safer decisions in his own end and better defensively, something that starts with your brain.

Hornquist made a lot of contact with Rinne's pad and stick as he went around Rinne's left to get to the puck coming off the boards. I never heard an explanation on the no interference ruling.
Jason Mackey
1:30
Went back and watched it again. I still don't see anything that prevented Rinne from making the save.
Justin
1:30
Speaking of 51, you think he is ready to step up and play NHL minutes? Has to be basically he last chance.
Jason Mackey
1:31
This might sound weird, but I actually think he is. I think he could have a breakout year this year. I really do.
Dale
1:31
In your opinion, does Pouliot have any real trade value left? Do teams see him as a top prospect who just doesn't fit the Pens' system, or is his value low?
Jason Mackey
1:31
I think his value is low. There may be zero interest, honestly. What he's put on tape isn't good. But as I just said, I think he might be alright ... here. I don't like the idea of Pouliot, at this stage in his career, learning another system.
Pekka Rinne
1:31
It's all MY fault!
Jason Mackey
1:31
Yes, yes it is.
Andrew
1:31
What's with Mark Madden's pronunciation of Mackey (Ma-Kai) ?   Anyways, that was good radio
Jason Mackey
1:32
Ha. Thanks Andrew. I don't know. I think it has something to do with English soccer, although I don't know exactly what. I think next time I guess on his show I'm going to have him explain this.

Which is more difficult to overcome: the turnover in players or the turnover in the coaching staff and front office?
Jason Mackey
1:33
I think front office, but not Tocchet. I think losing Botterill has and will continue to be a big blow. People underestimated everything the guy did, down to little, logistical things. He really was good at his job, and I think the Penguins are realizing this more and more now that he's gone.
David
1:33
With the way the roster sits right now, what are the chances the Pens can 3-peat?
Jason Mackey
1:33
I like them, honestly. I think they have as good of a chance as anyone.
Dave
1:33
The one thing I've heard this offseason that I don't quite grasp is that the Pens lost too much in the leadership department. Even their youngest players have gone through the rigors of the playoffs, and all anyone says about Sid is he's one of the best leaders in the sport. So why is leadership loss an issue? Don't they have enough of it?
Jason Mackey
1:34
I think they lost some "character" guys in Kunitz, Cullen (for now, anyway), Hainsey, Daley and Bonino. Well-liked guys. Key voices. Nothing against Jake Guentzel, but he has zero locker room presence. That's not a serious knock, but address those strong voices in some way -- Matt Hunwick fits here -- will be important.
Lukas
1:34
Are the Pens planning to have 8 D on their roster all year? I'd imagine one of them would get claimed if having to pass through waivers.
Jason Mackey
1:35
It's a good question. Although with this group, you never know with injuries.
HB
1:35
who do you see as our 6 defensemen next year?
Jason Mackey
1:35
To start, I'd go Dumoulin-Letang ... Maatta-Hunwick ... Cole-Schultz ... Ruhwedel and Pouliot as extras.
Joe
1:35
So you're saying Pouliot has a million dollar body and a ten cent brain?
Jason Mackey
1:35
Something like that, yeah.
Avi
1:35
Hopefully, you understood the Rinne comment was a dig at Predators fan incessant chant
Jason Mackey
1:36
I did.
Jordan Staal
1:39
So am I really coming back or what
Jason Mackey
1:40
No dude. Sorry. You're not on the market, and I talked to someone in your camp ... nobody has even broached the subject.
Scotty Bowman
1:40
What do I see in Ollie that others do not?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I think there's a lot of good to Maatta's game. I also think that, for whatever reason, when he struggles, he REALLY struggles. It's weird. It's like he gets his money's worth whenever he struggles.
D-man
1:41
What's your gut tell you about the chances Cullen returns for a shot at the 3-peat?
Jason Mackey
1:41
I don't think he's coming back. Sorry. I think if he plays at all, it's going to be in Minnesota.
Willis
1:45
So there's a "rumor" on Twitter that the Pens would be interested in a Kessel for Pavelski deal. Please shoot this down.
Jason Mackey
1:45
Per usual with this sort of stuff, need to see the original report first. If you can include that, I'd be happy to address.

1:46
What would you say are Sully's biggest challenges going into another title defense?
Jason Mackey
1:47
The biggest thing, honestly, is health. It's a belligerent game, to borrow one of Sullivan's favorite phrases. Things happen. Even with Letang this past season, the Penguins have actually been fairly fortunate when it comes to health, especially in the postseason. ... Also Matt Murray staying healthy and Antti Niemi being a serviceable No. 2. ... Defensive depth. ... A fourth line that can contribute. ... None are huge, but you asked for potential problems.
