I hate to keep bringing up Sheahan, but I feel like this is a small risk worth taking. It's a third option in what you presented. You can still see on some young guys while getting a guy who won't embarrass himself -- you'd hope not -- and could be let go after the season. But, yeah, I do see the argument to save the cash until you know what you have ... let the young guys do their thing ... then evaluate. My only problem with that is you have guys in Hagelin and Hornqvist who you're paying $4 million-plus who could conceivably be on your third-line, and you're tamping down their value by playing them a rookie who's limited offensively. Get what I'm saying?

Hi Jason, great chat!
Jason Mackey
1:43
I feel like I'm talking to myself here.
Dave

Beating the 3rd line center to death thing, is there a sneaky name out there via trade or in house that could be there opening night?
Jason Mackey
1:44
I guess Jake Guentzel, but Sullivan said on his Cup day that it wouldn't be ideal. I suppose if Sprong or Aston-Reese went bonkers, they could be convinced. Don't think it's terribly likely though.
Joe
1:44
The Pens should be all in to win Cups the next few years while Sid and Geno remain at the end of the primes. They really should be trying to go heavily after Duchene or someone who's a lot better 3C than Sheahan, whose best season point-wise was Bonino's worst season. If that means trading Maatta, Kessel, Horny, Sheary etc, they should do it as long as it makes the team better. Sheahan does nothing for them
Jason Mackey
1:45
I respect your opinion, Joe, but I don't agree with it. One, Colorado won't want Hornqvist or Kessel. They want youth. And how would trading Kessel jibe with staying in the championship window? Sheary, OK, but who else are you giving up? Colorado would want much more. I would consider dealing Maatta. You got me there. But I don't think they NEED Duchene to say they're keeping the window open. It's open as is.

Why are Sid and Phil such a bad mix?  Phil is not good in the dirty areas? Personalities? Both want the puck all the time?
Jason Mackey
1:46
I think some of that is fair. Crosby likes guys who can read and react off him and play a give-and-go game. Kessel can do some of it, but he's more about getting in position to get his shot off ... which he should be.
Dave
1:46
Do you think Reaves will surprise with something more than physical aspect he brings?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Yeah, I said this before, but I think Sullivan sees something here, that Reaves can contribute a bit on the forecheck and such. I think people will be pleasantly surprised to see that the guy can play a bit of hockey.
Stan Lee Kupp
1:47
Better two-way players all time than Sid?
Jason Mackey
1:47
Still thinking ... with his offensive ability? Maybe nobody.
Guido
1:47
Why are so many fans down on Maatta? He is still so young and can only get better from where he is now.
Jason Mackey
1:47
I agree with you, Guido. I think because when he struggles, he really struggles. He doesn't make subtle mistakes.
(different) Dave
1:47
Does Reaves bring more value than just his physical presence?
Jason Mackey
1:48
I think his skating may surprise some people. I think he's going to be good enough to warrant regular minutes. He's not, of course, going to play in all situations or be a top-six regular, by any stretch. But he might pitch in a little offense with the right players.

Compensation for great to elite player's offer sheet are robbery.  AA at 3+ wouldn't be.
Jason Mackey
1:49
I don't disagree with you, but those things just aren't done for whatever reason. I didn't start the convention of not doing it, but I see your point.
Peter K
1:49
Is it my imagination or does Olli Maatta remind you of a combination of Ron Stackhouse and Ian Moran
Jason Mackey
1:50
I think it's your imagination. When Olli has been healthy and in a groove, he has been good. Plus, it's easy to forget that he's still really young.
TK
1:50
Do you think they want Kessel to change his game at all?
Jason Mackey
1:50
They want him to shoot more. Other than that, no.
(different) Dave
1:50
Does Reaves bring more to the table than just his physical presence, will he bog things down as far as his speed game?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I don't think he'll bog things down. They're not going to expect him to be Hagelin.
Ryan Reaves
1:50
Will I give Brandon Dubinsky the beat down of a lifetime this season?
Jason Mackey
1:51
Ha. I don't know about that, Ryan. But I think the idea is that you think twice about taking liberties with Crosby.
(different) Dave
1:51
With Letang truly healthy, is the Pens D an elite unit?
Jason Mackey
1:51
Yes, I think so. If you're bottom pair is Cole-Schultz or even Cole-Hunwick, that's pretty darn good.
dave
1:51
How many games do you think they want Murray to play during the regular season?
Jason Mackey
1:52
I would say 55-60, but no more than 60. And if Niemi was good enough to where Murray could play 50 and they didn't lose anything ... I think they'd be really happy with that.
Mark
1:52
Hi JM......thanks for your insights. How cool was that of Sid - and I know he's done that before - to pay a visit to season ticket holders and create lasting memories for that family. You just don't see much of that from star players in any other professional sports league. Sid is just a notch above most, if not the rest.....
Jason Mackey
1:52
He really is. You've read what I've written about Crosby off the ice. Hopefully. He's as good of a human as you'll ever meet. Pro hockey or otherwise. He's just a good person. Plain and simple.
Jeff
1:52
Jason, u really think Sheahan (if we get) and Rowney can replace Bones & Cullens 2,095 face-offs, 70 combined points, & 2.6 PK T.O.I per game combined???
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think they can. Do I think there would be a dropoff? Yes, I do. But I also think Rowney will develop more, and Sheahan could bounce back and make last year an aberration.
Joe
1:53
If the Pens get Sheahan, what are they paying for him if you know? Pouliot as you suggested or a draft pick?
Jason Mackey
1:53
Maybe both, and a low pick. I didn't hear much in terms of possible return, though, to be fair.
Lukas
1:53
I couldn't agree more with Danis Zaripov. Do you think if we did sign him, he fit the system? What type of contract do you think he's looking for?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Don't know about contract, but I do think they could afford him. I think Zaripov would like to play here, too. ... In large part because I think he would fit their system and could play LW with Malkin.
Dan Bylsma
