Jason Mackey's Penguins chat: 9.28.17
powered byJotCast
Jason Mackey

He looks like the de facto at this point, at least until something definitive happens with Athanasiou.
Jaromir Jagr
2:07
C'mon, Pens, sign me!
Jason Mackey
2:07
I second this.
Jerry
2:07
Given the style of play he prefers and obviously been successful with, is Sullivan really on board with Reeves being given ice time over others on the team?
Jason Mackey
2:08
Eh, I wouldn't say OVER others. Reaves will play 8-9 minutes a night. I do think Sullivan believes those can be an effective 8-9 minutes. Also, some of them may well come on the penalty kill.
Mike Sullivan
2:08
I don't know, Mackey, our schedule in October is brutal...brutal, I say. How do you think we'll come out of October record-wise?
Jason Mackey
2:08
No worse for wear, that's for sure, Mike. I think you'll be fine.
Jennifer Aniston
2:08
Great chat, Jason. Love the Pens!
Jason Mackey
2:09
Wow, Jennifer Aniston is here? I mean, I know this is fun, but that's impressive. Love, love, love We're the Millers.

What's the chance that JR will actually land an external 3C? Feel like Sully and the team are getting comfy with their internal choices.
Jason Mackey
2:10
I don't have a percentage for you, but I can say that I do think the Penguins feel completely comfortable if they don't make a move. Have felt that way.
Lucas Hentschel
2:10
Do you see the penguins leaning towards a in-house candidate for their 3rd line c, or are they looking for a trade because they kept pouliot in camp?
Jason Mackey
2:11
They kept Pouliot because he's on a one-way deal. I think they're also sort of hoping that he does something to snatch a job, although that's been a long way from happening. But, yeah, he could be a trade piece. Not a big one, but a trade piece nonetheless. As I've been saying, I think the in-house candidate thing is becoming more and more realistic by the day.
HB

You the man Mackey
Jason Mackey
2:11
Thanks, HB.
HB
2:11
I’m sad that they sent sprong down I’m sad and mad that a lot of people are attacking my Captain.
Jason Mackey
2:11
I'm not glad that you're sad and mad. It's too bad.
D. Sprong
2:11
Who was closer to making the team, me or ZAR?  Is this Di Pauli guy as good of a talent as me or ZAR?
Jason Mackey
2:12
He's different. Maybe. I think Di Pauli is more in the Carl Hagelin mold; I could see him as an effective third-liner down the road. I would say Aston-Reese was probably ahead of Sprong, simply because of opportunity and the open job to the left of Malkin.
Coty
2:13
Do you think the Pens are going to try the combination of Hags-McKegg-Kessel? Split up the big 3.
Jason Mackey
2:13
Not in the near future. Sullivan seems pretty happy with Malkin and Kessel together right now.
HB
2:13
I listened to your interview on the sportsnet and I really appreciate the way you spoke but man the interviewer was trying to bait you left and right
Jason Mackey
2:14
He can try up and down, too. I'm not going to say anything there, here or anywhere that I don't truly believe.
Caopall

At first I thought it was great that the Pens were taking the high road, ignoring the politics and accepting an invite to the WH. After this weekend, I am not so sure. Agree with Gentille in that the Pens could find themselves backed into a political corner. Your thought?
Jason Mackey
2:19
I think they're in a tough spot. I think it's tough for them to win no matter what. I don't blame them for going, but I do understand why people are upset over it. I also think that Crosby has gotten more grief that he deserves over everything.

Does Geno have something on Phil Kessel?  He has to because Phil goes above and beyond to get him the puck.....
Jason Mackey
2:21
Ha. I think Mike Sullivan would agree with you. Sullivan would not complain if Phil started getting a little more selfish. Sullivan has certainly tried to get Phil to shoot it himself.
TK
2:21
Can coaches still challenge for goalie interference?  I think they should get rid of that challenge too.
Jason Mackey
2:22
Believe so. Wait a couple years. Can wait to find out what the penalty for an incorrect one of those challenges will be.
Caopall
2:22
If Hagelin can perform on a 2nd line with Geno and Kessel then great. What do the Pens do with him and his 4 million dollar salary if he can't?
Jason Mackey
2:22
What can they do? Try to get the most out of it, right? FYI, Scott Wilson was there today. I'd expect Bryan Rust to get some reps. Seems it's very much going to be trying guys until someone runs with that role.
AT from VA

Who do you think will have the biggest improvement between this year and last year?
Jason Mackey
2:23
I'm going with Olli Maatta. I think Olli is going to have his best season since his rookie year. Maybe even better than that.
Rick
2:23
Jason thanks for doing these chats.  Always enjoyable.  Do you think GMJR has any Cullen regrets at this point?  If they offered more $ would he have stayed?  Or now happy with performance of the new depth.  We have heard your outlook that Nick was never in play due to length of deal.
Jason Mackey
2:24
No problem, Rick. I love them. I don't think GMJR has any Cullen regrets. I honestly don't think there was anything else that Jim could've done. Minnesota -- and the opportunity it presented -- was special for Matt; there's no amount of money that would have done the trick, honestly. Jim did everything he could.
Eric S.
2:24
What kind of ceiling do you think Guentzel has? Do you think he could eventually be a star player?
Jason Mackey
2:24
Isn't he a star now? If Guentzel is healthy, I don't see why he can't score 35 goals this season, honestly.
R C Hunter
2:24
Any known Dead fans in Pens locker room? Phish heads?
Jason Mackey
2:25
Ha, none. I used to have Paul Martin. Now, nothing. Murray is the only I have to talk music with, honestly.

I’m struggling to see what some people see in Reaves. I’ve been open minded about this trade but so far in the pre-season he looks a step behind the play, often lost, and hasn’t shown the same hustle that Kuhnhackl or Wilson have. It’s only pre season sure and maybe he doesn’t feel the need to fight for his spot but I’m not seeing how he helps this team.
