For crying out loud. Bednar looks fine.

Why are you personally so adamant the Pirates should sign a rapist
Jason Mackey
1:43
I'm not "personally so adamant," nor am I alone in considering Bauer.
Howard
1:43
Hey Jason, congrats on the new role.

You've mentioned that you think Bauer deserves a "2nd chance" in MLB but the history shows that this wouldn't be the first time he's received such a thing.
Arizona traded him for a bag of baseballs because his coaches and teammates simply didn't want to deal with anymore.
He was booted off a 93 win playoff team in Cleveland because they didn't want to deal with him or his on field temper tantrums anymore.
He gets to LA and is promptly handed the largest suspension in MLB history after an MLB led investigation into 1 of 4 different accusations of sexual assault, then the Dodgers decided to release him after having met with him once his suspension was shortened, deciding they would rather not have the guy they were going to pay 22 million on their team.

This would be his 4th chance, at least. All this for a 33 y/o 2 years removed from MLB with just 2 career seasons above 3 fWAR? Explain? I don't understand the fascination.
Jason Mackey
1:44
One, they're not considering him for the reasons you've outlined. Two, I don't know what more you want me to explain? They do need pitching, and he won a Cy Young. Do you think that everyone else is against bringing in Bauer? Because they're not. It's a pretty split crowd.

Any predictions on what the Pirates W-L record will be this season?
Jason Mackey
1:44
Not yet, but I do think they will be over .500.

Has Livvy been spotted at Pirate City yet???? 🔥
Jason Mackey
1:45
Not yet. I'm sure yinz will let me know when she's here.

Good afternoon,Jason. All this talk of the team possibly trading with the Marlins, maybe giving up two young infielders, to me would be ludicrous. I want to see Preister start, using the bullpen, once a week for the beginning of the season for the fifth starter. Is that a good idea? Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:46
I don't agree with it. If they have a chance to acquire Edward Cabrera, I think they should do it, personally. Obviously not giving up anything stupid, but it they can do it without giving up a top-10 guy -- I think they can -- then absolutely.

1:46
How is the velocity looking like for Contreras, Ortiz and Preister?
Jason Mackey
1:46
Good enough, although we're eyeballing. No numbers given.
Josh
1:47
It's snowing here, man. Do you have an extra room or couch where you are? haha
Jason Mackey
1:47
Ha. I do. You got some extra Dead and bourbon for me?
Tyler
1:47
hey Jason, any new news on the Edward Cabrera trade? Do you think it gets done?
Jason Mackey
1:47
No news, sorry. ... But yes, I do think it gets done.
Charles
1:47
Fallon, Kimmel, or Colbert, who you prefer?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Hmmm ... that's a good one. Probably Fallon, but I like all three, honestly.

"We've been feeling better and better about the growth we were seeing in that young pitching group."  Can you provide any more details or context to the players Cherington is referring to?
Jason Mackey
1:48
Sure. The group basically consists of Priester, Ro, Ortiz, Jackson Wolf, Jared Jones and Bailey Falter. At least to which Ben is referring. There are others below them in the minors, most notably Skenes.
Justin gray
1:48
Tell me your honest thoughts on Trevor Bauer.
Jason Mackey
1:49
I would need to have many more conversations with people close to him before rendering a halfway decent opinion.

Is there any scenario where one of the "Boras" pitchers goes long enough where the Pirates could possibly offer up a large $, short term deal with opt outs?
Jason Mackey
1:50
I would be stunned.
H
1:50
If I asked for a percentage chance that the Pirates would bring in 1 additional starter, where do we stand now that spring training has formally started? Any names that are possible besides Cabrera, German, or Syndergaard? Thanks
Jason Mackey
1:50
Those are the three I've heard the most, honestly. I still think there's a very good chance they add someone, though. They might not need to go deeper than those three.
Josh
1:50
I assume a lot of questions about Henry Davis and whether he starts in AAA or not. But do you feel that his path is starting catcher? Like, if he's not starting catcher for Pittsburgh, he will be starting for Indianapolis? Or would they consider keeping him on as a backup?
Jason Mackey
1:51
It depends on stuff ... how does Grandal do? Delay? Does the lineup need his bat? Tough to answer on Feb. 16. But I do think they would rather have him catch in the minors than suddenly start playing right field.
Leyland
1:51
Hey Jason, congrats on the columnist gig. Really going to miss the Pirates coverage and these chats, though! Do you see a day where MLB retires Clemente's 21 league-wide, like 42?
Jason Mackey
1:52
Thanks so much, Leyland. The plan moving forward will take care of you, don't worry. I do, yes. It should have happened by now, but I think there's enough respect there that it's probably gonna happen sooner than later.

Whats the latest on a rotation acquisition? Is a deal to be done by Monday do we think?
Jason Mackey
1:53
I think it's entirely possible they get something done by Monday. Trade or some sort of signing.
Matthew
1:53
How is Carmen Mlodzinski looking so far from what you’ve seen at Pirate City?
Jason Mackey
1:54
Incredible stuff, honestly. Par for course with him.
Chester Cheese
1:54
Hi there Jason, love your work and congrats on the new gig! is there any smoke on any upcoming trades? or are we just riding with what we have right now?
Jason Mackey
1:54
If I say there's smoke, everyone is going to think something is imminent, then throw that back at me. Ha. I think discussions are very much ongoing.

1:54
When you said Davis has looked fantastic so far, did you mean behind the dish, at the plate, or both?
Jason Mackey
1:54
At the plate.  It's been hard to glean much from his work behind the plate.
James

Jason, what is preventing the Pirates from just going out and getting a Montgomery? And please spare the money it would take to get him. The Pirates would move from bottom of the NL Central to bottom of the NL Central in terms of money if he they got Montgomery. A dependable, top-of-the-line starter with postseason experience. They have shown no substance in the whole “we WANT to win.” All bark, no bite.
